  • Patent number: 4240878
Abstract: A method of platinizing and heat treating tantalum metal is described. The platinizing of tantalum is accomplished by placing a piece of conductive corrosion resistant metal and a tantalum workpiece as electrodes in a platinizing solution. The electrodes are connected to a source of DC power supply and when the current is passed, platinum black is deposited on the tantalum workpiece. The platinized tantalum workpiece is then placed in a furnace maintained at a temperature of about 1050.degree. to 1150.degree. C. for a time sufficient to diffuse the coated platinum into the surface of the tantalum core. The method of using the electrode for the detection of faults in a glass lined apparatus is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4240832
Abstract: This invention discloses an improved dental pulp capping and cavity lining composition which is successful in capping and preserving the vitality of moderately inflammed, as well as normal, healthy dental pulps and also serves as an acid resistant, protective cavity liner. This composition is prepared by reacting suitable phenolic derivatives with formaldehyde or its polymer, under carefully controlled conditions, to form a low molecular weight polymer condensate, which is first purified and then compounded into a two-paste composition of optimized utility. In use, one paste portion, containing the condensate, reacts with the other paste portion, containing calcium hydroxide, to yield after mixing a solid protective layer of set material, which facilitates healing of the pulp and formation of secondary dentin.

  • Patent number: 4228509
Abstract: A system for regulating and optimizing process conditions, such as octane number, aniline point or density of reformed hydrocarbons, by manipulating various process variables in order to control the process, both in accordance with a regulatory effect, namely, such as to cause the process to achieve and maintain the desired setpoint and setpoints for the process condition or conditions, and in accordance with an optimizing effect, namely, such as to cause the process to achieve some predetermined state defined as optimum. The effects are not necessarily consistent, but relative weights are assigned to the two effects such that the regulating effect is paramount until the process condition or conditions are substantially at setpoint or setpoints, at which time the regulating effect is minimum, thus allowing the optimizing effect to influence the process.

  • Patent number: 4221955
Abstract: An electrode-type steam generator includes a pair of spaced electrodes extending into a pressure vessel having a feed water inlet and a steam outlet. A rotary stirring device, cycled on and off by a pressure switch in the steam outlet, is provided in the vessel below the electrodes and is operative to create a vortex which artificially raises the level of the water adjacent the sides of the vessel without water being added, whereby the electrodes are immersed to a greater extent when the stirrer is operating to increase steam production than when it is not operating. The flow of water into the vessel through the feed water inlet is controlled by a solenoid valve responsive to the current flow between the immersed portions of the electrodes.

  • Patent number: 4221969
Abstract: A voltage supply for an X-ray tube provides both high and low voltages to the tube. A high voltage transformer using split primary and secondary windings is employed. The high voltage is switched on and off by selectively phasing the voltage across the transformer's secondary coils. Low voltage is coupled from one of two primary windings.

  • Patent number: 4218733
Abstract: A controller for process control has an adaptive gain. The controller is used as part of a closed feedback loop, and will, in response to different variables, maintain a constant loop gain regardless of non-linearities in the system.Signals representing the variables are transformed into corresponding active gain factors. The active gain of the controller is computed as a function of the product of the active gain factors and then translated to an output signal. One or more active gain factor is defined as having a first gain factor, at least one breakpoint, and a second gain factor. If two breakpoints are used, a base gain is interposed. Furthermore, one or more variables may have a step function as an active gain factor.

  • Patent number: 4217009
Abstract: A dental unit capable of positioning dental instruments at a location convenient to either a seated or standing dentist. The unit has the instrument holder mounted on a four-bar linkage for swinging the holder from a relatively low stored position to an in-use position. At a low point of the swing, the dental instruments are at a relatively low position and convenient to a seated dentist. The four-bar linkage is arranged so that at a higher point in the swing, the instrument holder is thrust to a relatively high position as may be convenient to a standing dentist.

  • Patent number: 4196460
Abstract: A major surgical light has a plurality of light sources which permit both color and size adjustment of the illumination pattern. Color variation is accomplished by increasing the intensity of a light source of one color value while decreasing the intensity of a light source of another color value. Size adjustment is accomplished by providing two light sources, each casting different diameter light patterns which are superimposed on the work area. The intensity of one light source is increased while the other is decreased so as to vary the size of the pattern.

  • Patent number: 4195829
Abstract: The disclosed surgical table hydraulic system uses a plurality of double acting hydraulic motors, such as double-ended hydraulic cylinders or reversible rotary hydraulic motors, that can be operated either independently or in synchronization. Each of the motors can be connected to a source of pressurized hydraulic fluid, and to a reservoir, for independent action. At least some of the motors can also be connected in a hydraulic series between the hydraulic fluid supply and the reservoir for synchronous operation. In this way, separate elements of the table, controlled by the individual hydraulic motors, can be moved in unison. Also, by operating two motors that control different types of motion, such as elevation of a table and tilting about a horizontal axis, compound motions of one or more sections of the table can be provided.
