  • Patent number: 7530397
Abstract: A pipe severing tool is arranged to align a plurality of high explosive pellets along a unitizing support structure whereby all explosive pellets are inserted within or extracted from a tubular housing as a singular unit. Electrically initiated exploding wire detonators (EBW) are positioned at opposite ends of the tubular housing for simultaneous detonation by a capacitive firing device. The housing assembly includes a detachable bottom nose that permits the tool to be armed and disarmed without disconnecting the detonation circuitry. Because the tool is not sensitive to stray electrical fields, it may be transported, loaded and unloaded with the EBW detonators in place and connected.

  • Patent number: 7493961
Abstract: Controlled Buoyancy Perforating technology for highly deviated and substantially horizontal wellbores may include long perforating guns assembled on a rig floor from a multiplicity of light weight and highly engineered shaped charge carrier joints. Tubular housings for such light weight joints may be fabricated from composite materials having steel transition collars. The collars are designed for an angularly coordinated, bayonet assembly and, in most cases, rapid disassembly. The internal volume of each joint is environmentally sealed by a plurality of O-rings. Barbs carried by collet fingers projecting from opposite ends of a sealing sleeve that externally bridges a transition collar union plane secures the union by meshing with detent channels in the respective collars. Individual shaped charge units and cooperative fusing are assembled in a light weight inner loading tube having an alignment collar to secure the angular and axial position of the loading tube relative to the transition collars.

  • Patent number: 7409849
Abstract: Insulating oil in electric power generation, transmission and distribution equipment such as circuit breakers, regulators, phase shifters, tank diverter switches and capacitor banks for respectively separated phases of a plural phase transmission or distribution line is filtered for removal of accumulated water, carbon particles and other contaminants by filters in oil circuits respective to each phase in the plurality. Each oil circuit respective to each circuit breaker includes a respective filter and circulation pump. However, all pumps in the plural phase power system, for example, are driven by the same motor and drive line whereby a fluid condition or circulation interruption of one oil circuit that requires termination of pump operation in the one oil circuit terminates the pump operation in all oil circuits. Pump motor power is preferably drawn from an energy source that may be independent of that served by the transmission and/or distribution power source.

  • Patent number: 7333391
Abstract: A hermaphroditic connector for a multiple conduit cable assembly comprises a cylindrical protective collar surrounding an inner cylindrical core. The collar is axially secured to the inner core but partially rotatable about the core. The distal end of the collar is formed to rotatively mesh with another collar of the same shape to mechanically secure a joint of two collars. Cable conduits enter the assembly through one axial end for electrical junction to terminals imbedded within the inner core. The terminals are functionally aligned with one of four parallel chord sections on the distal end-face of the inner core. The cross-sectional area of the inner core end-face is divided into two half-area sections; two parallel chord sections in each half-area section. The distal end-faces of the several chord sections are profiled to three, axially spaced, cross-sectional planes to axially mesh respective connector pins and sockets.

  • Patent number: 7269095
Abstract: A network distributed seismic data acquisition system comprises seismic receivers connected to remote acquisition modules, receiver lines, line tap units, base lines, a central recording system and a seismic source event generation unit synchronized to a master clock. One or more high precision clocks is added to the network to correct for timing uncertainty associated with propagation of commands through the network. Seismic receivers and seismic sources are thereby synchronized with greater accuracy than otherwise possible. Timing errors that interfere with the processing of the seismic recordings are greatly reduced, thus enabling an improvement in subsurface geologic imaging.

  • Patent number: 7263030
Abstract: A seismic survey system having remote acquisition modules (RAMs) for acquiring seismic signals and communicating with a central recording system (CRU) via a network of cables, other RAMs, and line tap units (LTUs), arranged in a matrix of receiver lines and base lines. Each RAM cyclically converts analog signal values to digital, forming data packets. Interrogation commands emanating from the CRU and relayed with strategic delays by intervening LTUs and RAMs are received by the RAM. Each command causes the RAM to transmit a data packet. Strategic delays are set such that the transmission capacity of the line is best utilized. Power and frequency of transmission are selectable by the CRU to optimize performance. Cables contain multiple communication pairs. The network path between the RAM and the CRU is established from the CRU and altered in event of malfunction. All types of network elements are interconnectable. Recorded samples are synchronous.

  • Patent number: 7195066
Abstract: The weight of a shaped charge carrier is predetermined as a buoyancy control parameter for perforating guns. Each charge carrier comprises a co-axial assembly of inner and outer carrier units. Both carrier units may be fabricated from low density metals or composite materials comprising high strength fibers in a polymer matrix. The outer carrier wall thickness may be a weight control parameter. Shaped charge units having no independent casement are formed into sockets within a light-weight inner carrier unit. Alternatively, the shaped charge units may be formed within light-weight material cases and seated within sockets in the light-weight inner carrier unit. Materials and dimensions are selected to substantially achieve the desired carrier buoyancy in the specific well fluid whereby a perforating gun assembled from a plurality of the carriers may be substantially floated into a completion position and allowed to settle along the floor or ceiling of the wellbore as predetermined by the perforation direction.

  • Patent number: 7172719
Abstract: Elastomeric sealing elements such as gaskets, O-rings and diaphragms suitable for use as seals in ultra-pure water systems are fabricated from foamed PVDF by compressing foam blanks up to a 5:1 to 7:1 ratio in a heat environment of about 300° F. to about 350° F. The compressed and heated blank is held for a time period sufficient to displace substantially all air from the foam pores and released.

  • Patent number: 7078619
Abstract: A universal seismic data acquisition module includes independent environmental isolation chambers for essential signal processing circuitry and for cable connection unions. Cable connection unions are rapidly replaced without opening the main protective chamber. Different connector types required for the many data transmission cable designs needed to service a wide range of survey conditions are more easily accommodated than in conventional single chamber designs. The module is rugged and suitable for operating in a wide range of physical environments including lake or sea immersion to substantial water depths, desert, arctic and others. Need for investment in multiple module types for varying survey conditions is thereby reduced without compromising capacity.

  • Patent number: 7073448
Abstract: A shaped charge tubing cutter includes a minimal contact suspension to isolate the cutter explosive from the housing and sub structure. A charge detonation booster main-cavity is located on the juncture of the charge truncation planes. Explosive in the booster main-cavity is detonated by a shielded primer path. Explosive density in the primer path is less than the main-cavity density. A dense, powdered metal SC liner and an abruptly stepped jet window in the tubing cutter housing improve performance. The axial span of the jet window is preferably aligned with the axial span between the liner bases. A testing apparatus and procedure inexpensively verifies downhole performance.

  • Patent number: 6942034
Abstract: A method of determining the extent of detonation of a Well Perforating Gun is disclosed. The Perforating Gun is positioned in a borehole and the detonation is initiated at one point on the essentially curvilinear array of explosive charges. Seismic waves emanate from the series of explosions, propagate away from the Perforating Gun and are detected at a distance away from the Perforating Gun using seismic receivers consisting of single or arrayed transducers of conventional design. The seismic receivers may be placed at or near the earth's surface and/or in one or more boreholes. The recorded seismic waves are processed and analyzed, and may be decomposed through a novel inversion process. The combined results are further analyzed to determine the extent of detonation including whether the gun fired or not, and if there was a misfire or partial misfire, the quantitative extent of the detonation.
