Patent number: 6529631Abstract: A method and apparatus for adjusting encoding parameters in accordance with a perceptual metric derived from analyzing the contents of an image or video being coded. Namely, the perceptual metric is produced by comparing an original image (or image sequence) to a reconstructed image (or image sequence) and processing the comparison results using a quantitative perceptual difference measure. The difference measure results in a perceptual metric representing the “fidelity” of the reconstructed image. The metric is used to control the encoding parameters such that the coding of the image can be iteratively adjusted. Furthermore, the method and apparatus is used to provide an automated steerable image compression system.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1997Date of Patent: March 4, 2003Assignee: Sarnoff CorporationInventors: Heidi Peterson, Jungwoo Lee

Patent number: 6522787Abstract: An image processing system for imaging a scene to mosaic, selecting a new viewpoint of the scene, and rendering a synthetic image from the mosaic of the scene from that new viewpoint. The synthesized image is then combined with a second image. The combination of the second image and the synthetic image generates a composite image containing a realistic combination of objects in the second image and the scene. Using this system, a production set or other scene need only be created once, then imaged by the system. Thereafter, through image processing, any view of the scene can be synthesized and combined with separately imaged performers or other objects to generate the composite image. As such, a production set or other scene can be repetitively reused without recreating the physical scene.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1997Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Sarnoff CorporationInventors: Rakesh Kumar, Keith James Hanna, James R. Patent number: 6512857Abstract: A system and method for accurately mapping between camera coordinates and geo-coordinates, called geo-spatial registration. The system utilizes the imagery and terrain information contained in the geo-spatial database to precisely align geographically calibrated reference imagery with an input image, e.g., dynamically generated video images, and thus achieve a high accuracy identification of locations within the scene. When a sensor, such as a video camera, images a scene contained in the geo-spatial database, the system recalls a reference image pertaining to the imaged scene. This reference image is aligned very accurately with the sensor's images using a parametric transformation. Thereafter, other information that is associated with the reference image can easily be overlaid upon or otherwise associated with the sensor imagery.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1998Date of Patent: January 28, 2003Assignee: Sarnoff CorporationInventors: Stephen Charles Hsu, Rakesh Kumar, Harpreet Singh Sawhney, Jane Asmuth

Patent number: 6511186Abstract: An image projection system includes an image generator, a screen and a focus and aim component. The focus and aim component receives modulated light from the image generator and focuses and deflects the light as a function of a position on the screen. The component consists of an array of lenslets with wedge. The wedge or prism refracts the light and the lens focuses the light. As a result, the optics are selectively tailored to provide a clear image over the entire field of view, even in systems compact in depth that would otherwise rely on a short focal length lens. Acute incidence angles at the periphery of the screen are handled by TIR Fresnel lens elements or by diffractive elements. The focus and aim capability is alternatively provided by holographic elements in a holographic array.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2000Date of Patent: January 28, 2003Assignee: Sarnoff CorporationInventors: Herschel Clement Burstyn, Michael J. Patent number: 6507327Abstract: A three electrode plasma display panel (PDP) operates in concurrent sustain and addressing periods, rather than separating the sustain and addressing periods. Because of this concurrent operation, a PDP with a brighter display is produced. Crosstalk between sustain electrodes and the column electrodes of non-selected rows is mitigated by implementing column voltages such that there is no difference in crosstalk brightness levels in non-addressed pixels in the on state compared to non-addressed pixels in the off state. This is accomplished by choosing column voltages that are approximately symmetric about one-half of the sustain voltage.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2000Date of Patent: January 14, 2003Assignee: Sarnoff CorporationInventors: James Harold Atherton, Michael Gillis Kane

Patent number: 5566251Abstract: Disclosed is a technique for deriving a composite video image by merging foreground and background video image data supplied from a plurality of separate video signal sources employing pattern-key insertion, rather than prior-art color-key insertion, for this purpose. Pattern-key insertion involves replacing a first pattern in a video scene with a second pattern. This is accomplished by first detecting the first pattern in the video scene and estimating the pose of this detected first pattern with respect to a reference object in the video scene. The second pattern is then geometrically transformed using the pose estimate of the detected first pattern. Finally, the detected first pattern is replaced with the geometrically-transformed second pattern.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1995Date of Patent: October 15, 1996Assignee: David Sarnoff Research Center, IncInventors: Keith J.
