Abstract: Suspension formulations containing dexamethasone and ciprofloxacin are disclosed. The formulations contain a nonionic polymer, a nonionic surfactant and an ionic tonicity agent, but are physically stable and easily re-suspended. The formulations are intended for topical application to the eye, ear or nose.
Abstract: Optical characteristics of optical systems, such as the eye, are measured including vision defects of the eye using a collimated beam from a diode laser focused onto the anterior surface of the cornea of the eye for providing a finite source of secondary radiation on the retina of the eye, the image of which is close to a desired diffraction limited spot. The secondary radiation is reflected back from the retina as a reflected wavefront of radiation that passes through the eye and is directed onto a wavefront analyzer where distortions associated with the reflected wavefront are measured. By focusing on the cornea through a long focal length lens and thus converging the beam through a small angle, as opposed to typically focusing a collimated light onto the retina, the need for lenses or lens combinations, and the time required to adjust such to accommodate the differing vision of each patient is eliminated.
Abstract: A surgical system having a cassette with an aspirant collection chamber and an aspiration vent line that draws fluid from the aspirant collection chamber. The pressure within the collection chamber is maintained near ambient so that when the aspiration vent line is open, fluid flows from the collection chamber and into the aspiration line. Such a system does not require a second source of irrigation fluid, minimizes pressure surges into the irrigation fluid line and does not affect the fluidic performance of the aspiration system. In addition, various vent pressures can be achieved by varying the vertical position of the reservoir relative to the aspiration line.
Abstract: A phacoemulsification apparatus includes a needle that is hollow and terminates in an evacuation port and has a straight portion and a bent or angulated portion spaced from the evacuation port. The needle defines an inner channel that narrows from the evacuation port before, at or beyond the angulated portion. The outer surface of the needle is also configured to converge before, at or beyond the bent or angulated portion. A flexible infusion sleeve surrounds the needle longitudinally along the straight portion of the needle and terminates at an area proximal to or in the vicinity of the angulated portion.
Abstract: An apparatus and method to elevate an infusion source, the pole of a control unit is increased by about thirty-two (32) cm to increase the height of an infusion bottle attached to a hanger on the pole during ophthalmic surgery including that performed with a phacoemulsification surgical handpiece. The control unit being for irrigation and suction lines that lead to the phacoemulsification surgical handpiece used to conduct eye surgery.
