Publication number: 20030111035Abstract: An intake head device for an internal combustion engine, which is suitable for impulse charging and/or residual exhaust gas purging, including a pressure accumulator (24) which may apply overpressure to the pressure passage via a pressure passage, so that this produces residual exhaust gas purging of the cylinder (16) when the inlet valve (18) is open and the impulse flap (21) is closed. The impulse charging is performed by a partial vacuum which is generated in the accumulator passage (22) by the air intake of the cylinder (16). The pressure accumulator arrangement of the invention has the advantage that the closing time of the flap (21) may be longer.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 3, 2002Publication date: June 19, 2003Applicant: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventors: Jochen Linhart, Michael Fasold

Patent number: 6578537Abstract: An intake device for an internal combustion engine, comprising welded shells joined along a partition line, in which the partition line is provided with a region for producing inclined additional surfaces, which generate a transverse force Q2 due to their inclination relative to a pressure force D applied for welding the shells. This transverse force Q2 offsets a transverse force Q1 which is generated as a result of the inclination of partial regions of the partition line relative to the applied pressure force D. In this way, the transverse forces which arise during production of the intake device may be at least partially offset in the component, so that little or no forces are exerted on the molding tools, and the welding results for the intake pipe may thus be improved.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2002Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventors: Arthur Klotz, Ingo Koch, Herbert Pietrowski, Matthias Teschner

Patent number: 6579448Abstract: A liquid filter, especially for oil of an internal combustion engine, with a bypass valve including a valve body 20 and a valve seat 21 integrated in an end plate 32 of the filter insert. A spring 22, which urges the bypass valve closed, is mounted in a support member 24 attached to the housing. Thus, parts of the bypass valve subject to wear and soiling can be replaced each time filter element 18 is replaced, and reliable operation of the bypass valve is assured throughout the life of the filter. The filter insert can be designed free of metal for easy disposability. The filter cartridge can also be used with known filter arrangements in which a permanent valve body is housed in the support member 24. When the filter element of the invention is used, this permanent valve body stays in the support member and functions as an intermediate piece 35, which transmits force between spring 22 and valve body 20. The valve function is assumed by new valve body 20 engaging valve seat 21.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2001Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventor: Klemens Dworatzek

Patent number: 6564768Abstract: An intake system for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, which includes a first air intake 10, which is arranged at a point in the motor vehicle that is advantageous for air intake, and a second air intake 11, which is arranged at a point that is protected from road spray and splashes of water. The two air intakes 10, 11 end in a common line 12 that communicates with the internal combustion engine. In the first air intake 10, a moisture sensor 14 is arranged. When water enters into the first air intake 10, this moisture sensor emits a signal that actuates a solenoid 23 to move a pivotable valve 13. In a first switching position pivotable valve 13 closes the second air intake 11 so that no air reaches line 12 from the second air intake 11. In a second position (shown in broken lines) pivotable valve 13 closes the first air intake 10 so that air reaches line 12 only through the second air intake 11.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2001Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventors: Sascha Bauer, Thomas Haubold, Michael Kolmeder

Publication number: 20030089654Abstract: A housing configuration for a liquid filter in which the housing is cup-shaped and is produced by a molding technique. The housing lid or lid is secured to the housing (10) by a course of threads (28) which can be produced without forming any undercuts. This is achieved inside an area (30) around the mold parting plane (29) by providing recesses (31) on the course of threads in the horizontal areas. As a result, the thread can be produced directly on the housing by the initial molding technique without any post-molding processing measures, so that manufacturing costs are reduced.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 12, 2002Publication date: May 15, 2003Applicant: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventor: Herbert Jainek

Patent number: 6557512Abstract: An adjustable intake pipe, especially for supplying combustion air to an internal combustion engine, which includes a collector chamber arranged in an essentially cylindrical control element. The collector chamber has a larger volume than required for the air supply, so the chamber is not used efficiently. In the invention, the collector chamber volume is used by arranging additional components of the intake tract defined by the intake pipe, i.e. of an internal combustion engine, within the collector chamber (11), for example, by arranging a resonance chamber (20) therein with the resonance chamber connected to the air supply system by through holes (19). This arrangement better utilizes the chamber volume and is particularly advantageous in motor vehicle engine compartments where limited space is available. The intake system also is more compact and has a lower overall weight.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2001Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventors: Rudolf Leipelt, Olaf Weber

Patent number: 6558536Abstract: A liquid filter, especially including an oil filter cartridge (12) which is contained in a pot-shaped or cylindrical housing (10) with threaded cover (11), into which a cooler (13) is preferably installed. An outlet opening (37a) is contained in the oil cooler (13) which facilitates complete emptying of the cooler when the filter is changed. In this way, a complete replacement of the oil can be performed, so that the replaced oil is not contaminated from the outset by residues of the old oil. Thus, service intervals can be lengthened. To prevent a short circuit of the outlet opening (37a) during operation, the opening is closed by a valve stem (33) coupled to the threaded cover (11) and opened by unscrewing the cover.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2000Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbHInventors: Herbert Jainek, Martin Weindorf, Herbert Dreher
