  • Patent number: 5895105
Abstract: The present invention is directed to improved polybutadiene compositions suitable for use in molded golf ball core construction. The improved polybutadiene compositions are composed of polypropylene powder resins which have the effect of increasing the hardness of the resulting molded cores without increasing the weight upon curing, thereby allowing for a reduction in the amount of crosslinking agents utilized and increasing the amount of fillers incorporated therein. The addition of the polypropylene powder resins to the core compositions lowers the cost of the molded core, while maintaining the proper weight and compression. The present invention is also directed to golf balls produced utilizing the improved core compositions.Furthermore, the invention is directed to a method for reducing the amount of crosslinking agents utilized to formulate a core composition through the incorporation of polypropylene powder resins.

  • Patent number: 5890975
Abstract: A spherical ball and a method of making the spherical ball wherein the ball has a plurality of elongated dimples substantially covering the outer surface of the ball without any dimple overlap. The elongated dimples are of at least two types including a first plurality of dimples having a minor axis and a major axis which together form the long axis of the first plurality of dimples the minor axis being less than the major axis. A second plurality of dimples has a minor axis equal to that of the first plurality of dimples and a major axis less than the major axis of the first plurality of dimples but greater than the minor axis.

  • Patent number: 5891973
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a game ball and method for making the same. The game ball has an ionomeric cover which includes a combination of ionomeric crosslinks and covalent crosslinks. The game ball cover is superior in at least one of cut resistance and scuff resistance to a conventional cover that does not have covalent crosslinks but is otherwise substantially identical in composition. The game ball cover of the invention is particularly useful for improving the durability of golf balls to be struck with sharp-grooved clubs.

  • Patent number: 5890974
Abstract: A golf ball including two poles and an equator is characterized by the arrangement of a preselected number of dimples in a geometrical lattice configuration based upon a subdivided tetrahedron on the surface thereof The lattice includes six dimple-free great circles around the circumference of the ball, one of the circles corresponding with the equator and another of the circles passing through the poles. All of the circles define twenty-four generally equivalent triangles, twelve in each hemisphere of the ball. An equal number of dimples are arranged within each of the triangles, and the dimple arrangement in at least two of the triangles is different from the dimple arrangement in the remaining triangles.

  • Patent number: 5886103
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a golf ball with a cover formed from a polyamide composition and a method of making the same. More specifically, the golf ball has a cover which contains a combination of a polyamide component and an ionomeric component or a non-ionomeric terpolymer component. The cover composition has excellent durability and resistance to cracking, even at cold temperatures. The nylon-ionomer blend is a useful substitute for an ionomer golf ball cover, particularly when a low spin golf ball is desired.

  • Patent number: 5885173
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a game ball, such as a golf ball, having an indicia formed from a UV curable ink containing aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) filler. The ATH improves pad transfer of the ink. An ink composition suitable for pad printing, and a method for applying an indicia to a game ball also are disclosed. The UV curable ink has excellent pad transfer properties, and good durability.

  • Patent number: 5865697
Abstract: A ball comprising an interior layer; an intermediate layer having a plurality of spacer panels extending radially outwardly from the interior layer, the panels each having interior edge located adjacent to the interior layer and an exterior edge and lateral side edges therebetween coupled to lateral side edges of adjacent panels in a waffle-like configuration to form a plurality of recesses extending downwardly from the exterior edges to thereby form a grid pattern of recesses with an exterior surface formed from the free exterior edges; and an exterior layer adjacent to the exterior surface of the intermediate layer for entrapping pockets of air within the recesses.

  • Patent number: 5857926
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a golf ball cover composition comprising a combination of ionomer, ethylene-propylene rubber, and copolymer formed from (a) an .alpha.-olefin having two to eight carbon atoms, (b) an unsaturated monomer of the acrylate ester class having from 1-21 carbon atoms, and (c) an acid which includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of .alpha., .beta.-ethylenically unsaturated mono- and dicarboxylic acids, the weight ratio of the ethylene-propylene rubber to copolymer of .alpha.-olefin, acrylate ester and acid being in the range of 25:75 to 75:25. The novel cover composition enables the production of a golf ball having a high coefficient of restitution and a very soft cover with excellent cut resistance.
