Patent number: 5833561Abstract: The present invention relates to a ball bat with tailored flexibility with a cylindrical handle zone at a first end of the ball bat. The cylindrical handle zone has a knob disposed on a free end thereof. A generally cylindrical hitting zone is at a second end of the ball bat remote from the first end. An essentially frustoconical transition zone is between the handle zone and the hitting zone. The transition zone includes an inboard portion of a first length and an outboard portion of a second length together forming a flex control zone. The flex control zone modifies normal flex characteristics of the ball bat.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1997Date of Patent: November 10, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Kennedy, Brian Feeney

Patent number: 5830087Abstract: Disclosed herein is a multi-layer golf ball having a central core, an inner cover layer containing a non-ionomeric polyolefin material, preferably a plastomer, and an outer cover layer comprising a thermoplastic material. The combined thickness of the inner and outer cover layer preferably is at least about 0.10 inches. The golf ball has a coefficient of restitution of at least about 0.780. When the inner cover layer contains a non-ionomeric material such as a metallocene-catalyzed polyolefin and the outer cover layer contains ionomer, the golf ball of the invention can be configured to have playability properties comparable to those of golf balls which contain substantially higher quantities of ionomer. A method for forming the golf ball described above also is disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1995Date of Patent: November 3, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventors: Michael J. Sullivan, Dennis Nesbitt, Mark Binette

Patent number: 5827131Abstract: Golf club heads, both woods and irons, have recessed areas in the striking faces of the club heads with an insert secured therein. The insert is of a laminated structure having multiple layers and so constructed that the outer layers are of a substantially high strength to weight material and the center layers are of a relatively lower weight material. This structure allows the insert to be reduced in weight so as to allow the weight difference to be repositioned about the perimeter of the club head to achieve optimum weight distribution.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1996Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventors: Steven J. Mahaffey, Daniel A. Melanson

Patent number: 5827134Abstract: A method for improving the adhesive bonding of a top coat to a game ball such as a golf ball while simultaneously forming an identification stamp on the ball by (i) stamping an unfinished golf ball with a radiation curable ink and (ii) subjecting the unfinished golf ball to irradiation prior to application of a finish or top coat. Game balls so treated exhibit superior adhesion of a top coat and avoid the need for application of a primer coat between the unfinished golf ball and the outer top coat.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1996Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventors: Michael J. Sullivan, Thomas Kennedy, Viktor Keller

Patent number: 5827548Abstract: An improved golf ball injection mold is characterized by upper and lower support plates each containing corresponding hemispherical cavities which define spherical mold cavities when the plates are brought together. A plurality of retractable core pins are arranged in each cavity for supporting a core of a golf ball. A runner within the plates delivers fluid thermoplastic material to each cavity to form a cover on the golf ball core supported therein, and a cooling channel is provided adjacent to each cavity to provide even cooling of the thermoplastic material. Independently operated ejection assemblies are provided for the golf ball and for the residual thermoplastic material in the runner. With the improved ejection mold, the size and roundness of the golf ball and the surface configuration of the golf ball cover are more consistent and the molding time is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1997Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventors: Gerald A. Lavallee, Douglas L. Miller

Patent number: 5820489Abstract: A golf ball comprising:a core comprising a diene polymer having a Riehle compression of at least 0.075; anda cover having a Shore D hardness of at least 65, wherein the cover is comprised of at least one high acid ionomer resin comprising a copolymer of greater than 16% by weight of an alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid, and an alpha olefin of which about 10 to about 90% of the carboxyl groups of the copolymer are neutralized with a metal cation. The golf ball has a diameter of 1.700-1.800 inches. The thickness of the cover is in the range of 0.08 to 0.13 inches.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1996Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventors: Michael J. Sullivan, R. Dennis Nesbitt

Patent number: 5813580Abstract: A frameless infant carrier which converts from a front carrier to a hip carrier. The carrier includes a pouch for containing the infant, a waistbelt for adjustably connecting the pouch about the wearer's waist, a pair of shoulder straps attached to the pouch for supporting the infant on the shoulders of the wearer, and a pair of infant support straps connected between the front panel of the pouch and the shoulder straps. The infant support straps are adjustable to provide support for the upper portion of the pouch, and to draw the infant securely against the wearer. The carrier converts between alternate carrying positions by disconnecting each of the shoulder straps from the waistbelt, connecting the free ends of the shoulder straps to the infant support straps, slipping an arm of the wearer under a shoulder strap so that the shoulder strap slips off the shoulder of the wearer, and sliding the pouch laterally around the body of the wearer.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1996Date of Patent: September 29, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventor: Paul F. Fair

Patent number: 5803831Abstract: Disclosed herein is a multi-layer golf ball having a soft outer cover. The golf ball has a thermoplastic inner cover layer which preferably has a Shore D hardness of at least 65, and an outer cover with a Shore D hardness of 55 or less, and more preferably 48 or less. In a particularly preferred form of the invention, the outer cover comprises at least 75% of a soft ionomeric neutralized copolymer formed from a polyolefin, an unsaturated carboxylic acid, and a monomer of the acrylate ester class. The golf ball of the invention has exceptionally soft feel and high spin rates on short shots of 80 yards or less and, particularly, 40 yards or less, while maintaining good distance and average spin on full shots.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1996Date of Patent: September 8, 1998Assignee: Lisco Inc.Inventors: Michael J. Sullivan, John L. Nealon, Mark Binette

Patent number: 5785609Abstract: A metalwood golf club head including upper and lower surfaces, a front ball striking face and a curved rear surface is characterized by a concave projection in the lower surface extending from the face toward the rear surface. The depth of the concavity in the projection is governed by the loft of the club face, with the depth being greater for higher lofted clubs. The concave projection enables the club head to strike to golf ball resting on the ground, and particularly in a poor lie such as in a bunker or deep rough, without the head becoming buried in the ground.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1997Date of Patent: July 28, 1998Assignee: Lisco, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey D. Sheets, Tom Greene, Lee Trevino
