  • Patent number: 5009474
Abstract: The junction between two optical fiber light conductors is protected by a sleeve envelope which connects the protection coatings directly to each other. Tension resistent filler fibers are compressed by a shrink fit inside the sleeve envelope so that tension stress bypasses the light conductor fibers through the filler fibers. The sleeve envelope ends are shrink fitted to the protection coating. The highly tension resistant filler fibers, surrounding and bridging the junction, are tightly enclosed in the sleeve envelope by the shrink fit so that tension stress also passes through the filler fibers, thereby permitting the sleeve envelope to perform its protection function while the filler fibers provide the required strength.

  • Patent number: 5006694
Abstract: A laser operation such as a laser welding operation or a laser cutting operation is improved in its quality and a consistently high quality is achieved by arranging auxiliary tool units upstream and/or downstream of a main laser tool unit including a primary laser head on a common tool carrier. The secondary tool units upstream of the laser operation are intended for a preliminary surface treatment to present the most appropriate surface conditions for the following laser operation. Similarly, the tool units arranged downstream of the laser operation are intended for subsequent work operations such as an immediate cleaning operation, a coating operation or the like to avoid a reoxidation of the welding seam or of the cut edge of the work piece. The secondary tools make sure that the laser operation is enhanced or improved either by presenting optimal conditions for the laser operation or by improving the work piece subsequent to the laser operation.

  • Patent number: 4997513
Abstract: Preimpregnated fiber reinforced tapes, so-called prepregs, are dispensed and deposited in a molding and bonding apparatus by a device in which a supply spool or roller carrying the tape is supported by a carrier having an adapter for connection to an arm of a conventional industrial robot. The carrier also supports feed rollers for advancing the tape and a cutter for cutting the tape. The feed rollers are secured to a support which in turn is secured to a fixed member by guide elements and biasing springs for a vertical guiding of the support movement. All drive members are controllable, so that all functions can be performed under the control of a computer in accordance with a program stored in the computer. Thus, the tape dispensing, application, and cutting takes place substantially automatically.

  • Patent number: 4993666
Abstract: In a pivotable seat especially for a flight attendant in an aircraft, the backrest and the seat part are constructed to be pivotable together about an approximately vertical axis when the seat part is pivoted about an approximately horizontal axis into an upright position. The seat is secured to a carrying structure of the aircraft. The seat plate (25) and the backrest carrier plate (27) are milled parts. A spring is activated by tilting the seat part (2) into an upright position, whereby the seat 1 is biased into a recess (15) for storage. For pivoting the seat out of the use position into the recess (15) during non-use, only the locking of the seat part must be released and the seat part tilts itself into the vertical position, whereby the mentioned spring is activated for pivoting the seat into the recess (15) and locking it automatically in the recess.

  • Patent number: 4988060
Abstract: A solar collector panel arrangement includes a plurality of panels interconnected to form panel wings which in turn are secured in a symmetric fashion to a spacecraft, especially a satellite. At least the axially outermost panels forming the tip of a panel wing, are partially and/or fully foldable while the other panels of the wing are fully unfoldable. In the fully unfolded state of a wing all panels are located in a common plane in which also the system central axis is located. The two solar generator wings are so folded and structured or arrestable in certain positions that the entire center of gravity in the partially unfolded state remains in the same position as in the fully unfolded state and in the fully folded state.

  • Patent number: 4985706
Abstract: A process for data transmission uses a geo-stationary satellite and at least one sub-satellite, the sub-satellites being placed on lower orbits. For the transmission of news, at least two data streams are transmitted with different powers. The first data stream, with a higher power is used for linking with the geo-stationary satellite (S.sub.1) and the other data streams are transmitted by means of PN (pseudo-noise) sequences for linking with the sub-satellites (S.sub.2). Two data transmissions thus take place in the same carrier frequency, but involving different satellites that are both within the visibility range of an earth station. This type of transmission using additional data streams of information is suitable for controlling and/or regulating the exchange of news between satellite-satellite and/or earth-satellite-earth or for controlling or regulating the orbit of the satellites.

  • Patent number: 4978221
Abstract: Two laser distance measuring functions are preformed on board of a ground-hugging cruise missile by at least one laser distance meter for taking downwardly directed altitude measurements and diagonally or slantedly forwardly directed distance measurements for producing corrected altitude signals for use in controlling the flight of the missile. Both types of measurements can be made by one laser distance meter that is tiltable in the required direction or two laser units are provided. The correction provides a clear recognition of artificial fog by evaluating both types of measured values in an intelligent signal processing unit which compares the intensities of the measured values from the same ground locations, determines the extinction coefficient of the fog and takes the angular distribution of the back-scattering intensity of the laser beams into consideration for correcting the altimeter readings.

  • Patent number: 4970979
Abstract: A sailing yacht having a hull and a sectional mast holding a sail, is equipped with a canard rudder and two rolling keels. Each rolling keel has a ballast container. A three point wing system is formed by wings carried by the canard rudder and by the two rolling keels for producing buoyancy, for steering, and for stabilizing. Thus, the three point wing system has a fore wing (9) forming an end wing of the canard rudder and two aft wings (11, 11') forming end wings of the rolling keels (10, 10'). The rolling keels (10, 10') are tiltable about rotational axes extending above the water line approximately in parallel to the hull axis, whereby the rolling keels (10, 10') are normally above the water line and only the long end (14, 14') of the wing (11, 11') dips into the water, so that the end disk wing (15) functions as a lift producing surface. The ballast is shiftable between two ballast containers 17, 17'.

  • Patent number: 4957249
Abstract: A thrust vector control for a jet engine is accomplished by controllable flaps which have an inner, jet flow facing contour with a double curvature. One curvature section is convex and extends between the leading edge of the flap and a transition point. The other curvature section is concave and extends between the transition point and the trailing edge of the flap. The flap or flaps are arranged downstream of the propulsion jet nozzle and are tilted into the jet stream as required for the vector control. A pressure sensor is arranged so as to measure or pick-up a pressure value, preferably near the trailing edge of the flap, which pressure value depends on the dynamic pressure head in that area. The respective pressure value is used in a closed loop control circuit for operating the tilting drive of the respective flap.
