  • Patent number: 5242999
Abstract: The invention relates to a regulation method for regulating the temperature in a reactor utilized in the polymerization of olefines. A circulating gas is led to the reactor along a circulating gas flow line, and the circulating gas is cooled by leading part of the circulating gas flowing along a circulating gas flow line along a by-pass flow line through a cooler. A regulating device for the circulating gas inlet-flow temperature controls the amount of the circulating gas by-pass flow along a circulating gas by-pass flow line through the cooler such that the sum of the openings of a valve in the circulating gas flow line and a valve in the circulating gas by-pass flow line is maintained substantially constant in the range from about 90 to about 120%.

  • Patent number: 5234879
Abstract: When asymmetric olefins or a monomer mixture containing asymmetric monomers is polymerized by a catalyst composition containing esters of carboxylic acid e.g. as a so-called donor, and alcohol the ester group can be transesterified with the alcohol to an ester containing another alkyl group during the preparation and/or polymerization of the catalyst. This is advantageous particularly when an adduct of a so-called spray-crystallized Mg-halide and alcohol is used as the catalyst carrier, because the alkoxy group of the alcohol of the carrier and the alkoxy group of the ester of the donor can be transesterified and thus obtain the preferable effects of both esters on the run of the polymerization reaction. Hereby, a solvent having a high boiling point should be used as the intermediate agent, so that the transesterification reaction can take place. Most preferable have been found hydrocarbons having high boiling points, especially nonane and decane.

  • Patent number: 5215949
Abstract: In conventional spraying methods the problem in the preparation of small carrier particles aimed for the polymerization is that the drops constituting the prestages of the particles agglomerate or form otherwise in different sizes, whereby the size distribution of the carrier particles becomes too broad. This leads due to the so-called replica phenomenon to a polymer product having also a too broad particle size distribution. In the present invention the carrier is prepared by spraying a liquid containing a carrier through a nozzle into inert gas so that its first forms small droplets, which then solidify to small carrier particles. The desired narrow particle size distribution is provided by feeding a liquid containing a carrier through a nozzle, in which or in connection with which the liquid drops by means of the standing sonic waves in the ultrasonic range into small droplets of uniform size. The droplets of uniform size solidify then into small carrier particles of equally uniform size.

  • Patent number: 5204303
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the preparation of a supported procatalyst intended for the polymerization of olefines, in which particles are formed of magnesium dihalide and alcohol, the particles are reacted with an organic compound of a metal from the groups I-III, the thus obtained particulate product is activated by means of a titanium and/or vanadium compound and optionally a donor, and optionally a prepolymerization is carried out for the activated particles. A problem of such a method is how to form particles of magnesium dihalogenide and alcohol having a structure advantageous for the polymerization of olefins. The problem has in the present invention been solved so that the particles are formed by spray crystallizing (spray freezing) a mixture of magnesium dihalide and alcohol to complex particles of magnesium dihalide and alcohol. The hydroxyl content of the particles so obtained is much greater than earlier, which results in a much more active procatalyst than the preceding ones.

  • Patent number: 5195654
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and device for feeding a mud-like catalyst mixture into a polymerization reactor. The catalyst mixture is fed from a container into a batching space of a feeder connected thereto, from which channel the catalyst mixture is further fed by batches into the polymerization reactor by the use of the pressure of a medium fed into the feeder. In accordance with the invention, after each catalyst batch fed into the polymerization reactor, the medium is substantially removed from the batching space of the feeder by leading the medium via an outlet channel into a space between two on/off valves before filling the batching space with a new catalyst batch.

  • Patent number: 5164456
Abstract: Polyolefin-vinyl polymer composites are produced by impregnating polyolefin particles with vinyl monomer and free radical polymerization initiator in the ratio of about 10-200 parts by weight of vinyl monomer and 0.01-4.0 parts by weight free radical polymerization initiator per 100 parts by weight polyolefin, the impregnation being effected by slowly mixing the components at room temperature or at an elevated temperature below the decomposition temperature of the free radical polymerization initiator. After the impregnation is completed, an aqueous suspension of the mixture is formed by adding the same to water in a ratio of about 100 parts by weight of mixture per 80-1000 parts by weight of water, after which the aqueous suspension is heated to a temperature sufficiently high to polymerize the vinyl monomer.
