Abstract: Spray coating, particularly flat spray coating of circuit boards. Applicant's method of conformal coating, eliminates "railroading" at the edges of the flat spray web and assures precise control of the amount of coating material placed on the circuit board surface. The method includes longitudinally advancing a pressurized coating over a surface to be coated, while simultaneously feeding the coating in a flat spray pattern, and triggering feeding "ON/OFF" so as to proportion the amount of coating being fed onto the surface and to reduce "fishtail" at the edges of the flat spray pattern.

Abstract: A novel method and apparatus is disclosed for the coating of a support or moving web using curtain coaters during the start-up and shut-down of a free falling liquid curtain. The apparatus is typically a catch pan positioned between a first and second edge guide and in close proximity to a support. The catch pan includes a main catch pan surface and first and second opposing sides each having a shim projecting out along the upper edge thereof and into contact with the first and second edge guides, respectively. Each shim strips liquids from the adjacent edge guide, and then directs such liquids onto the catch pan surface during start-up and shut-down without the deposition of excess liquids on the support, web, or coating roller. Means are provided for retracting the catch pan and controlling the falling curtain during start-up, and for inserting the catch pan for intercepting the falling curtain during shut-down.

An apparatus for coating small parts which comprises a movable surface (12), spray means (22), and heating means (24) wherein the movable surface comprises a conveyor belt shaped so as to invert the parts, especially a catenary curve.
Abstract: Apparatus for maintaining a relatively placid pool of liquid coating material in the trough between two nipped rolls comprises a pair of deckles, one disposed near either end of the nipped rolls, each of the deckles having an edge generally conforming to a segment of the adjacent roll to effectively form an end of the trough formed by the rolls. At least one of the deckles has one or more openings which permit the liquid coating material to flow laterally out of the trough and through the deckle at a rate proportional to the depth of the coating material in the trough. Controlling the lateral outward flow of material from the trough stabilizes both the turbulence of the liquid coating material in the trough and the surface condition of the coating material.
Abstract: Skis are waxed by a heated sole plate 18 with a porous insert 42 which is flexibly applied to the gliding surface and can be shifted in a longitudinal direction. The insert absorbs wax 50 from a tub 48 heated to a pasty consistency. Porous sheet material 46 may be applied between the sole and the gliding surface. The treatment can include the removal of remnants of old wax from the gliding surface, which is absorbed by the sheet material and softened by heating the gliding surface with the sole. The wax penetrates into the micro cavities of the ski bottom coating and any scratches in it, and the sheet material ensures that a smooth, flat and flexible layer is formed on the gliding surface.

Abstract: A short dwell coater apparatus is disclosed for coating a web with a coating material, the web moving contiguously with a rotating backing roll. The apparatus includes a housing which is disposed on the opposite side of the web relative to the backing roll. The housing defines a chamber is connected to a pressurized source of coating material. The chamber is exposed to the web such that the web supported by the backing roll is coated with the coating material during passage of the web past the coating chamber. Each of a first and second weir extend in a cross-machine direction such that the coating chamber is bounded by the weirs and the web moving between the weirs. The first and second weirs define respectively first and second overflow gaps. The arrangement is such that during use of the apparatus, when the web moves past the coating chamber, coating material is coated onto the web while excess coating material overflows through the first and second gaps for recirculating through the coating chamber.
Abstract: An apparatus useful for continuous pan coating of edible cores which includes a coating drum arranged for rotation around an inclined axis and having an inlet opening at the upper axial end of the coating drum for reception of the edible cores, and a discharge opening at the lower axial end of the drum, so that the force of gravity urges the cores through the drum. The apparatus also includes a means for continuously driving the drum, means for providing coating material to the cores at a controllable rate, and means for delivering drying gas, such as air, to the cores also at a controllable rate while the cores are in the drum. The present invention has at least one after-treatment drum likewise arranged for rotation around an inclined axis and having an inlet opening at the upper axial end of the after-treatment drum and a discharge opening at the lower axial end, as well as a means for continuously driving the cores from the coating drum to the first after-treatment drum.
Abstract: In a device for alternatively one- or double-sided coating of a running paper web the final evening-out of the coating is made in a smoothing nip including a first roll and a counter member. The device includes means for leading the web from below upwards into the smoothing nip. At a considerable distance before the smoothing nip, there is a coating substance applicator including an applicator chamber, where the coating substance is brought into a substantially non-pressurized contact with the running web for adhering thereto and travelling therewith upwards to the smoothing nip. The web moves linearly from the applicator to the smoothing nip.
Abstract: A method of forming a coating on a web. A coating mixture includes a continuous phase of a first material and a second material contained in microcapsules. The first material and the second material interact to form the coating. The coating mixture is applied to a face of the web. The web is passed between a back-up member and a doctor blade so that the doctor blade levels the coating mixture on the web and crushes the microcapsules to cause mixing of the materials on the web to form the coating on the web.
