  • Patent number: 5609081
Abstract: A portable round tube cutter has a hollow central shaft through which passes a length of tubing to be cut. A transmission gear jacket is axially slidable along the shaft and rotates with the shaft. A tool chuck has a tubing cutter that is manually movable into the tubing to cut the tubing at a desired location. The tool is fed into and away from the tubing by a manually operable gear engaging the transmission gear jacket to cause axial movement of the jacket along the central shaft. Such axial movement rotates a transmission gear which, in turn, is engaged with a rack on the cutting tool mount to move the cutting tool either towards or away from the tubing. A clamping device is also included to clamp the length of tubing in the desired cutting position.

  • Patent number: 5598757
Abstract: A tab (22) at the edge of a panel (10) may be advantageously sheared by transporting the panel into an in-line shear (30). As the panel is transported into the shear, an adjustable rail (52) engages the tab (22) to guide the panel to maintain its orientation. The rail (52) is adjusted after the tab (22) has been sheared to now engage the panel (10) along its edge formed by the removal of the tab. In this way, the rail (52) can guide the panel upon transport from the shear.

  • Patent number: 5590577
Abstract: A cutting-off device and at least one tear detector are provided for cutting a web of paper in a press end of a paper machine, in response to a tear in the web of paper in a single-tier dryer end, the tear of the web of paper being recognized via a tear signal and transmitted to the cutting-off device. The tear detector has a transmission/reception base unit, which, on the one hand, at the start of a production cycle, or whenever a tear in the paper web is detected, records and stores the spectrum of the existing shade of color of the corresponding dryer felt, and possibly updates the stored shade of color at the time of subsequent tears. On the other hand, upon a later tear in the paper web, the base unit compares the shade of color of the dryer felt at the existing tear and the previously stored shade of color. If they match, the base unit activates the cutting-off device when (and only when) the stored shade of color of the dryer felt is recognized.

  • Patent number: 5588280
Abstract: Apparatus that uses the burster method for positioning coupons from a continuous web at a predetermined time at a predetermined location for insertion is disclosed. A positioning roll pair defines a bight to receive the leading edge of a coupon and are driven by a positioning drive at a continuous predetermined speed. Feeding rolls located upstream of the positioning roll pair in the excess of one coupon length are driven by an intermittent feeding drive at a speed substantially less than the speed of the positioning roll pair. Controlling mechanisms actuate and deactuate the feeding drive in response to a timing mechanism related to container position and a coupon sensing mechanism at a sensing position between the positioning roll pair and the feeding rolls.

  • Patent number: 5586710
Abstract: A power stapler having a clincher provides a stitcher head for driving formed staples into a stack of sheets. A clincher box is positioned opposite the stitcher head. Clinchers located in the clincher box pivot upwardly under the force of a moving clincher bar to deform ends of the staple to pass through the sheet stack. The clincher bar or clinchers include a stop that limits retraction of the clinchers into the box. Hence, as the staple is driven by the stitcher head through the sheets, the ends of the staple are brought into engagement with the clinchers and plastically deform into a substantially inwardly curled shape. Following driving of the staple by the stitcher head, the clincher bar is actuated to rotate the clinchers upwardly toward the stack causing the curled tips of the staple to drive into the sheets. The clinchers can include grooves that are angled into alignment along parallel angled lines so that the ends of the staple pass each other and do not interfere with each other upon clinching.

  • Patent number: 5581889
Abstract: A versatile hand-held garden tool for cultivating, digging, weeding, pruning and trimming has a blade, a handle and a neck angling upwards from the blade that connects the blade to the handle. The blade has a body portion that is preferably 5"-7" long and a tip portion angling upwards from the body portion that is preferably about 1 inch long. The body portion has two edges, one edge is serrated and the other edge is beveled. The tip portion has a beveled edge. It is preferred that the handle have a V-shaped cross section to facilitate the mounting of a grip. The garden tool can be made by cutting a blank from a web of cold rolled steel having a thickness of about 0.075 inches, coining the beveled edges into the blank, and forming the tool by bending the blank. It is then preferred to heat treat and plate the cold rolled steel.

  • Patent number: 5582089
Abstract: A miter saw includes a support mechanism for supporting a miter saw unit relative to a base in such a manner that the miter saw unit is both vertically and laterally pivotable. A position determining mechanism serves to selectively determine the position of the saw unit at any of positions including a vertical position where a saw blade is positioned substantially vertically relative to the base, and leftward and rightward pivoted positions where the saw blade is inclined laterally leftwardly and laterally rightwardly from the vertical position by a predetermined angle, respectively. The position determining mechanism includes movable side stopper members and fixed side stopper members on which the movable side stopper members abut, respectively. The movable side stopper members are mounted on a movable member which pivots laterally with the miter saw unit. The fixed side stopper members are mounted on a fixed member which is non-laterally pivotally movably mounted on the base.

  • Patent number: 5572793
Abstract: A locking knife and sheath combination having a knife of unitary construction. A flexible engagement tab is provided on the handle of the knife for engaging with a tab receiving opening provided in a front portion of the sheath. Upon engagement of the tab with such opening, the knife is securely retained in the sheath. Removal of the knife from the sheath is accomplished by depression of the tab through the tab opening of the sheath. Sheath clamping means are also provided on the opposite side of the sheath and include a clamping arm which pivots with respect to the rearward surface of the sheath through means of rotation of a thumbwheel adjustment member. Rotation of the adjustment member allows for the clamping arm to selectively clamp the sheath to an article. A clamping device is provided for a folding knife having a thumbwheel adjustment member.

  • Patent number: RE35522
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for improved retention of steel rule dies inserted into die slots of a retaining board. A plurality of lock slots are oriented substantially perpendicularly to the direction of insertion and have open faces to permit communication with the die slots. A kerf lock is located within each lock slot and extends into the die slot until a die is inserted into the die slot. Upon initial insertion of a die into the die slot, the kerf lock compresses. Once the die is competely inserted, the kerf lock exerts a normal force against the die in the direction of the die slot wall opposite the open face. An inserted steel rule die is securely held within the die slot.
