  • Patent number: 8112557
Abstract: Method and apparatus for logging of data within a data storage system, such as a tape drive library. The tape drive library includes a central storage (memory) providing storage space assigned to each tape drive in the tape drive library and allowing each tape drive to directly store data there, that is to log data files. The logging of the data files is at the instigation of each tape drive and not via polling, so as to perform logging synchronous with tape drive events. In one version, the tape drives are coupled to the central storage via an Ethernet network and the log files conform to a standard file protocol, such as a network file system.

  • Patent number: 8112562
Abstract: Port management information is prepared for managing information related to the status of each of a plurality of ports possessed by a storage system in a unified manner. Change of the status related to any one of a plurality of ports from “normal” to anomalous is detected. For a subject external device which is using the anomalous path as an I/O path, a “normal” port is selected, on the basis of the port management information, from one or more ports related to one or more paths which are being used as alternate paths. And information related to this “normal” port which has been selected is notified to the subject external device. During path changeover, the subject external device selects as an I/O path an alternate path which is related to the “normal” port specified from the notified information.

  • Patent number: 8108579
Abstract: Described are techniques and mechanisms for media data storage management. Briefly stated, a media control component monitors the usage patterns of media files on a local device. Any media files whose usage pattern falls below a given threshold is identified as a trim candidate. The media control component trims those trim candidates by eliminating data (content) from the media files. The data is eliminated from the latter portion of the media file so that the trimmed media file will continue to render properly when initially launched. If the trimmed media file is launched, the media control component retrieves the eliminated data from a content server on which is stored a library of media files.

  • Patent number: 8095712
Abstract: A method and apparatus to read information from an information storage medium using a read channel, where that read channel includes a data cache. The invention generates an analog waveform comprising the information, and provides that analog waveform to a read channel, and generates a digital signal from that analog waveform using one or more first operating parameters. The method error corrects that digital signal at an actual error correction rate, and determines if the actual error correction rate is greater than an error correction rate threshold. If the actual error correction rate exceeds the error correction rate threshold, then the method captures the digital signal, stores that captured data in a data cache, reads that digital signal from the cache, generates one or more second operating parameters, and provides those one or more second operating parameters to the read channel.

  • Patent number: 8095698
Abstract: The Universal Serial Bus (“USB”) 2.0 Specification defines three speeds of communication for its bus, and each has its own signaling characteristics. Due to the uniqueness of each speed, PHYs must be placed in a separate mode for each signaling rate. Although USB devices may know its communication speed, a general purpose USB analyzer must be able to analyze all USB communications. Rather than force the user to manually set the operating mode of the analyzer, this invention describes circuits for automatically and reliably determining the monitored USB communication speed.
