  • Patent number: 4616962
Abstract: An indexable cutter insert for a rotary cutter includes a generally polygonal plate defined by a front face, a rear face and a plurality of side faces. The corner portions of the plate where adjacent side faces intersect one another are removed to provide respective corner faces. The plate has a plurality of main cutting edges each defined by the front face and a respective one of the side faces and a plurality of auxiliary cutting edges each defined by the front face and a respective one of the corner faces. Each side face serves as a relief surface of a respective one of the main cutting edges. A forward portion of each corner face remote from the rear face serves as a relief surface of a respective one of the auxiliary cutting edges. A rearward portion of each corner face remote from the front face is offset inwardly from the forward portion to provide a clearance surface. The clearance surface extends from the rear face to a plane generally centrally of the thickness of the plate.

  • Patent number: 4615197
Abstract: A thread rolling monitoring system in which one or more signal generating devices is provided in the mounting system of the stationary die of a pair of thread rolling dies. A sensor develops a signal which is a function of the reaction forces in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the workpiece being threaded. The signal provides a running indication of the match or mismatch of the dies, as well as other conditions of improper operation. The signal is used to control the operation of the machine and to separate improperly formed parts as they are produced.

  • Patent number: 4615202
Abstract: A roll stand has a frame in which upper and lower working rolls are journaled for rotation about respective parallel upper and lower working-roll axes and defining a workpiece nip. Respective upper and lower backup-roll guide elements vertically flank the working rolls and are each at least partially vertically displaceable relative to the frame. Respective upper and lower backup-roll journal blocks are axially displaceable but vertically fixed relative to the guide elements and define parallel upper and lower inner axes flanking the working axes. Respective inner backup rolls are journaled in the blocks for rotation about the inner axes and bear radially toward the nip on the working rolls. The inner backup rolls are therefore axially displaceable in the guide elements. A pair of outer backup rolls are journaled in the frame for rotation about outer axes coplanar with the respective inner axes and bear radially toward the nip on the inner backup rolls.

  • Patent number: 4615208
Abstract: A hydraulic press construction uses multiple alternating plates for the press frame sides and ends, and has joints which provide exceptional strength, high safety factors and a rigid frame for high tonnage applications. The joints function to utilize the full shear load capacity of the multiple adjoining faces of the plates in the joint sections. Multiple tensioned shear rods and/or high strength adhesive join the plates together at joint locations, and keys or tongue and groove configurations may be employed in the joints. These elements provide press joints that are rigid and that have high strength. They give the press frame a high resistance to deflection and distortion under load, as well as the capability for precision operations at press loads up to thousands of tons. A special hydraulic cylinder for the press also is described.

  • Patent number: 4615366
Abstract: A wheel supported mobile log splitter has an elongated frame supporting a stationary wedge-shaped log splitting element and an opposing movable ram which is connected to the piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder mounted on the frame. The cylinder is supplied with high pressure hydraulic fluid by an engine driven pump which receives fluid from a hydraulic reservoir associated with the frame and is also connected to the reservoir by a line having a high pressure relief valve. Hydraulic fluid is exhausted from the cylinder and returned to the reservoir through a pair of control valves which are coupled together and actuated simultaneously to provide for rapid return of the ram and for minimizing the cycle time to split a log.

  • Patent number: 4614136
Abstract: A mandrel assembly is disclosed for use in a portable lathe apparatus for machining the end face of a hollow workpiece. The mandrel supports an orbiting cutting tool which machines the end face and defines a cutting plane. The angle of the longitudinal axis of the mandrel and, consequently the cutting plane which is perpendicular thereto, is angularly adjustable with respect to the central axis of the workpiece. This enables the formation of a miter cut on the end of the workpiece. Complimentary hemispherical surfaces having common centers located at the juncture of the cutting plane and the central axis of the workpiece allow the mandrel to be angularly adjusted in any direction.

  • Patent number: 4614098
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for correcting the rolling load distribution ratio between given stands in a continuous rolling mill involves comparison of rolling load amounts at a pair of adjacent stands with a load distribution ratio set value. When coincidence is not found, the plate thickness on the exit side of an upstream side one of the pair of stands is changed, and at a time when a plate thickness changing point reaches the downstream side stand, the rolling reduction position at the downstream side stand is corrected so as not to change the plate thickness on the exit side of the downstream side stand.

  • Patent number: 4614099
Abstract: Upper and lower reducing rolls are mounted within a mill housing for rotation about their axes and for parallel movement. Actuating cylinders force the upper reducing roll downward toward the lower reducing roll to effect a separation force on a workpiece that is placed therebetween. Four direct drive motors, one directly coupled to each end of the upper and lower reducing rolls, counter-rotate the reducing rolls to drive the workpiece therebetween. The motors are synchronized within a close tolerance of a set speed to prevent torsion of one end of the reducing rolls relative to the opposite end. Preferably, the rolling mill includes closely enclosed backing rolls engaging the reducing rolls to prevent deflection of the reducing rolls under load. This allows the rolling mill to produce a flat workpiece over a wide range of separation forces by means of cylindrical reducing rolls.

  • Patent number: 4614103
Abstract: Horizontal supporting rolls disposed at a lateral side of the work rolls support the work rolls in the direction of travel of the rolled material, and horizontal back-up rolls disposed at a lateral side of the horizontal supporting rolls back-up the horizontal supporting rolls. Frames rotatably hold the horizontal supporting rolls and the horizontal back-up rolls at both axial ends of these rolls, and a first driving mechanism causes a movement of the frames in the direction of travel of the material to be rolled and to impart to the work rolls desired pressing force acting in the direction of travel of the rolled material. A second driving mechanism restrains the position of the frames thus setting the work rolls at predetermined offset positions, provided on the face of the housing confronting the holding means and adapted to guide the movement of the holding member in the direction of travel of the rolled material.

  • Patent number: 4612796
Abstract: Tooling clamps by which tooling having mounting tongues can be attached to and detached from the working edges of the ram and bed of a press brake. Each clamp comprises a clamp body affixed to the working edge of one of the ram and bed. The clamp body provides a clamping surface. The clamp body supports a plurality of clamping bars aligned end-to-end. Each clamping bar has a clamping surface opposed to the clamp body clamping surface. Each clamping bar is affixed to the body by bolts which pass through perforations in the clamp body with clearance, so that each clamping bar is shiftable between a tool-clamping and a tool-release position. Spring means bias the clamping bars to their tool-clamping positions. A housing is affixed to the rear of the clamp body and extends the length thereof. The housing has a longitudinal cavity containing an actuating bar in abutment with the heads of the clamping bar bolts and a high pressure hose.

  • Patent number: 4612963
Abstract: A machine wherein wire is being withdrawn from a reel or barrel by a wire comb forming unit which draws the wire at a given frequency has a lever which is pivoted at such frequency by a rotary cam and carries a first roller. The lever is pivotable about the axis of a second roller and the wire is trained first over the second roller and thereupon around the first roller on its way toward the wire comb forming unit. The pivoting lever ensures that the wire is drawn from the reel or barrel at a constant speed in spite of intermittent consumption of wire in the wire comb forming unit. The diameters of the two rollers are the same.
