  • Patent number: 4606188
Abstract: A connecting chain link with two loops for accommodating chain links of attached chain lengths comprises two main link parts identical in shape and dimensions and assembled along a first contact surface and a second contact surface which is complementary to the first one, and a limiting surface in the central portion of the link. The contact surfaces extend between an origin at the outer periphery of the link and close to a transverse axis thereof, and a termination at the inner periphery of one of the loops. The contact surfaces consist of a plurality of differently oriented surface sections and are so shaped as to form a plurality of intermeshing lug and recess means which effectively oppose tension stresses in the longitudinal direction and all stresses in the transverse directions, the latter ones particularly efficiently at the locations of said origins.

  • Patent number: 4606217
Abstract: The invention is a shifting mechanism for a screw press. The screw press includes a shifting coupling for the press spindle, a drive mechanism for continuously rotating a flywheel, a coupling mechanism operatively located between the flywheel and the shifting mechanism which is dependent upon angular deceleration and is controlled for the purpose of actuating the coupling mechanism. The shifting mechanism comprises a hydraulically actuatable shifting coupling. A hydraulically prestressed valve is located between the reaction mass and a rotating coupling portion that is connected to the flywheel. The coupling mechanism is controlled through the use of a hydraulic line and the prestressed valve is affected by the hydraulic pressure medium in that line acting upon the coupling mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4606388
Abstract: Low quality, low density woods are densified to form wood products having the characteristics of high quality natural hardwoods. A green solid wood member having a high moisture content is impregnated with anhydrous ammonia to plasticize the wood into a sponge-like form saturated with water and ammonia. This plasticized wood member is placed between press plates of a cyclic press and, while maintaining the temperature of the wood below 100.degree. C., it is subjected to a plurality of low pressure compression cycles each of about 1/2 to 1 minute duration with the wood being compressed to a predetermined thickness of up to 50% less than its original thickness. It is held at the reduced thickness for a short time and released during each cycle, whereby water and ammonia are squeezed out of the wood down to a moisture content of less than about 30%. The damp wood member of reduced thickness thus obtained is then dried to obtain a kiln dried, densified solid wood product.

  • Patent number: 4605392
Abstract: In an apparatus for making plastics carrier bags from a web of tubular film of thermoplastic material, a feeding mechanism intermittently conveys the webs by one bag width and a severing mechanism cuts the web into half tubes along an undulating curve. A carriage displaceable in the machine frame transversely to the feeding direction of the web is reciprocated by a drive derived from a first rotating control cam through gearing. A cutting knife pivotable in the carriage about its longitudinal axis passes through the plane of the tube about an axis perpendicular thereto and is so controlled by an oscillating drive derived from a second rotating control cam that its edge is substantially tangential to the undulating curve at the cutting point. A detour assembly retards one of the half tubes to bring the bag side edge zones into phase and each half tube is formed into bags by a transverse sever-sealing device.

  • Patent number: 4602539
Abstract: A dual spindle assembly is provided which has a hollow outer member having an inner member rotatably and eccentrically mounted therein. The inner spindle member has a mounting hole defined eccentrically in one end for engaging a cutting tool. In order to make possible a continuous change in the radius of revolution of the cutting tool about the axis of the outer spindle member, a plurality of worms extend parallel to the spindle assembly and are geared to one another for joint rotation. Ball nuts on the worms travel back and forth along the same with the bidirectional rotation thereof. Rigidly interconnecting the ball nuts, a connector surrounds the spindle assembly via a ring rotatably mounted therein. The ring has an inward projection making threaded engagement with the inner spindle member through a slot cut longitudinally in the outer spindle member. The linear travel of the ring with the ball nuts results in the rotation of the inner spindle member relative to the outer.

  • Patent number: 4602663
Abstract: A veneer lathe apparatus is described with a powered nose bar roll of large diameter that is capable of peeling logs down to an extremely small core diameter on the order of about 21/2 inches for soft wood. The large diameter nose bar roll prevents jam-up of wood chips and trash at the junction between such roll and the log and greatly increases cutting time between lathe knife sharpenings. Both ends of the nose bar roll are connected through flexible couplings of plastic to the output shafts of two separate drive motors. The nose bar roll may be provided with a grooved outer surface for greater friction and can apply up to 40 percent of the total torque required for rotation of the log and to pressure the log for compression of its surface in front of the lathe knife during peeling. The nose bar roll is of larger diameter than the minimum log core and preferably such diameter is at least fifteen times the thickness of the wood veneer being peeled.
