  • Patent number: 5249344
Abstract: Cutting apparatus is provided for cutting a hole or `window` in the wall of a pipe for example prior to joining a branch pipe to a host pipe. The apparatus comprises a chassis frame 14 carrying a cutter unit 42 supporting a cutter tool 62. The chassis is attached to and movable around the pipe 12 by means of `roller` chains 24. The cutter unit is movable with respect to the chassis frame by means of the associated slider block 38 which is slidable along longitudinally extending chassis frame which is slidable along longitudinally extending chassis frame members 16. Thus, the cutter tool 62 can be moved relative to the workpiece in one sense by movement of the chassis frame 14 and in another sense by movement of the cutter tool relative to the chassis frame. A combination of such movements enable the hole or `window` to be cut.

  • Patent number: 5247863
Abstract: A hole puncher formed as one piece of plastic molded into base, handle and receptacle portions hinged together by flexible, foldable joints. The one-piece plastic construction can be assembled quickly as a hole puncher by folding the portions into predetermined positions. A feature of the hole puncher is the use of a plastic locking strap connecting the handle and the base, for maintaining the handle folded over the base. Another feature is the use of translucent plastic material, enabling the user to visually check the desired alignment of pins with the paper to be punched, to assure proper location of the punched holes. The design provides an attractive, affordable and easily assembled design without sacrificing strength and durability.

  • Patent number: 5245755
Abstract: A force-multiplying device includes a base or stationary structure and three levers all pivotally mounted on the base and each having a force input end and a force output end and being arranged in a folded configuration such that each lever extends from the force input and to the force output end thereof in a direction generally opposite to that of adjacent levers in the series. The pivot point of each lever is closer to its force output end than to its force input end so that the force delivered at the output end is greater than that applied at the input end. The base and the output lever may operate as a pair of opposed jaws, each carrying a removable force application device for different applications such as cutting, crimping, punching, lifting and spreading. The input lever and the base structure may be configured as handles of a hand-operated tool and the levers may be arranged to either open or close the jaws in response to movement of the handles together.

  • Patent number: 5243763
Abstract: A butter knife having a knife blade (10) and a handle (16) is configured at the junction between blade and handle with a transverse channel (26) whose side walls (20, 22) are substantially parallel and disposed perpendicularly to the blade. The rear wall (22) has a vertical extension which is approximately twice the vertical extension of the front wall (20), so as to form a stop when the knife blade is moved slidingly inwards on the rim (34) of a plastic tray (22) having a folded edge. The width of the chann el is such as to enable the channel to be pressed over the tray rim so as to clamp the knife firmly in a substantially horizontal position when the tray is placed on a table.

  • Patent number: 5243887
Abstract: A punching tool for piercing a hole through the substantially parallel, spaced apart plates of a data storage disk casing uses a die which supports one of the plates and an elongated punch which pierces through the plates in succession. The disk is placed on a tray on the punch's base, and a drive lever is pushed downward to drive the punch through the casing plates. The punch is guided so that it moves along its axis of elongation and has a cutting surface at its end with a point to begin the hole in each of the plates and a trailing edge spaced apart from the point which completes the hole. The distance between the point and the trailing edge is great enough to allow the point to begin a hole in a succeeding plate before the trailing edge completes the hole in the previous plate.

  • Patent number: 5243889
Abstract: A cut-off machine for cutting off predetermined lengths from a moving length of roll form material such as tubing adapted to be positioned downstream from a source comprising a plurality of cut-off assemblies which are reciprocated longitudinally of the moving length of material and operated during the movement to sever plural predetermined lengths. The reciprocating and cutting movements are derived from a differential beam pivot assembly wherein one end of the beam is driven in a linear reciprocating path by a crank and the other end of the beam is connected to reciprocate the cut-off assemblies such that they are driven at a speed corresponding to the speed of the tube at the time the lengths of tubing are cut off. The apparatus can be adjusted to cut tubes of different lengths by moving the pivot point of the differential beam. The apparatus includes a mechanism for selectively disabling the operation of the cut-off assemblies and actuating them to permit greater lengths of tubes to be cut-off.

  • Patent number: 5243762
Abstract: A garden shears is provided with replaceable knives mounted on elongated grips which are connected at a pivot joint that is constructed of a steel bushing that takes up radial loads (shear and flexure). Axial loads are taken up by a screw bushing which passes through the steel bushing and a joint screw threadably engaged with the screw bushing. Both the joint screw and the screw bushing have widened shallow heads with slightly convex surfaces that pass into surfaces of the shears. The replaceable knives are supported at the rear by extensions of the respective grips in a manner such that the knives are not required to take up bending moments.

  • Patent number: 5243760
Abstract: A tube cutting tool is described in which a cutting head is rotatably mounted within a tool body wherein both define "O" shaped openings to enable tubing to be inserted perpendicularly through the tool. A cutting wheel is incorporated into the cutting head such that rotation of the cutting head causes the wheel to pass around the periphery of the tube. A feed cam and lever device are incorporated which mechanically bias the cutting wheel into contact with the tube wall until the tube wall has been completely severed. A gear drive assembly transports power from a power source to the cutting head to rotate it about the tube. Stabilizing devices are utilized to help secure and align the tubing into the cutting tool during operation.

  • Patent number: 5244139
Abstract: A magazine for V-nails for use in underpinning of picture frames receives a strip of V-nails secured together by heat-bonded non-adhesive synthetic plastic material through an opening of greater width than the V-nails. A pusher has a downwardly projecting tongue which is driven in the machine and has depending side walls at its forward end affording a contact point for pushing the V-nails at their center of gravity towards a pair of locating formations and the extreme forward end. A single V-nail which may be presented either point foremost or point rearmost is removed from the end of the strip in the underpinning operation, the magazine being cut away and the pusher being cut away to permit this operation. On return of the drive member, a cam firstly returns the pusher to a stop in the magazine and then lifts the magazine from its operative position to enable it to be removed or refilled.
