Patent number: 4460382Abstract: A composite wafer bonded to a carbide substrate is formed by preparing a dispersion of super-hard crystals and carbon black in a temporary binder such as paraffin, by preparing a base mixture of carbon fiber, carbon black and filler in the temporary binder, and by preparing an additional mixture of cobalt and carbon black in the temporary binder. The dispersion, base mixture and additional mixture are compacted to form an intermediate composite, the additional mixture forming a layer on one surface of the base mixture. The intermediate composite is heated to allow for the removal of the temporary binder and the infiltration of liquefied silicon into the composite which is then reaction sintered to form the composite wafer.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1981Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: John M. Patent number: 4459779Abstract: The grinding media is formed of a concentration of agglomerate free hard particles exceeding 50 percent by weight of the media, wherein the particles are chelated by a dispersing agent, surface treated with a surfactant, mixed with polyether polyol and polyisocyanate plus a catalyst and water and thereafter rapidly cured in a closed mold which has been preheated to a temperature exceeding 50.degree. C. and a pressure of 60 to 120 PSIG. The water reacts during curing to create a polyurea linkage and release CO.sub.2 as a blowing agent. The resulting media has a low elastic modulus with particles retained in a polyurethane-urea binder system. Patent number: 4460525Abstract: A method and apparatus for preparing thin layers, such as thin gel layers useful in electrophoresis, wherein a liquid layer material is introduced to the space defined between two parallel mold surfaces on first and second mold elements. Initially, the mold surfaces overlap each other to a small extent, and liquid is introduced to the space between the surfaces adjacent the leading edge of the top mold element. The mold elements are then shifted with respect to each other while maintaining their parallel relationship, and additional liquid layer-forming material is introduced to the space during the shift. In a preferred embodiment, a third mold element is situated adjacent to and spaced a small distance from the bottom mold element, and liquid material is introduced to the space between the bottom mold elements during shifting of the top mold.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1981Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Assignee: Europaisches Laboratorium Fur Mokekularbiologie (EMBL)Inventor: Wilhelm Ansorge

Patent number: 4457766Abstract: The invention provides resin compositions which are particularly suitable for utilization in electron cured coated abrasives. The resin systems of the instant invention have been devised to be particularly suitable for the backing fill of a cloth which is to form the base of a coated abrasive. The formation of a treated base cloth for coated abrasive formation by electron beam curing resins creates a product which in addition to being suitable for immediate formation into a coated abrasive by application of grain is further a product which may be stored for later use or sold to other parties that have need for a waterproof stretch-resistant cloth or that make coated abrasives without doing cloth finishing. The invention also encompasses the formation of electron curing resin systems which are particularly desirable for the make coat and size coat utilized in forming coated abrasives.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1980Date of Patent: July 3, 1984Assignee: Kennecott CorporationInventor: Lawrence D. Patent number: 4456451Abstract: A method and apparatus for fusing and shaping the end of a rope, cord or the like made of heat fusible fibers avoiding the enlarged or bulbous end which normally occurs when heated in a conventional manner. The method involves inserting the cut end of a rope into a cavity of a member wherein the cavity tapers inwardly in a direction from an open end thereof to a closed bottom end, heating the member to melt the end of the rope thereby fusing together the strands and cooling the heated end of the rope to set the fused ends and shape the same to the internal shape of the cavity. The apparatus is a thin-walled, metallic member conically shaped and located at the end of a handle. A flared sleeve is also provided in which the end of the rope to be fused is inserted to compress the strands together before being heated. The conical member maybe heated by a butane torch or the like or alternatively, an electric resistance heating element maybe incorporated in a stem projecting from the handle.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1982Date of Patent: June 26, 1984Inventor: George W. Patent number: 4450133Abstract: Method for the stabilization of molded parts. Stabilization is achieved for parts ejected from a molding machine, by immersing the parts in a fluid medium during the course of their conveyance from a molding site. The result is thermal and/or fluid modification which gives stability to the parts, allowing them to be controllably conveyed away for further processing. This can permit early ejection of parts from the molding machine and enhance production capacity.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1980Date of Patent: May 22, 1984Inventor: Ralph J. Cafarelli

Patent number: 4448591Abstract: A blank adapted to be mounted on a substrate to form a cutting insert is formed by preparing a crystal dispersion of super-hard crystals, such as diamond or cubic boron nitride crystals, and carbon black in a temporary binder, and a core dispersion of carbon fiber, carbon black and filler in a temporary binder. The crystal dispersion and the core dispersion are placed in a mold to respectively form a core dispersion layer and a crystal dispersion layer which forms a ring about the periphery of the core dispersion layer on the upper surface thereof. The crystal and core dispersion layers are compacted with a chamfered plunger applied to the lower surface of the core layer to form an intermediate composite having a recess at the lower surface thereby compressing the dispersions to a substantially uniform compaction throughout the intermediate composite. The intermediate composite is then heated to allow for the removal of the temporary binder and the infiltration of liquified silicon.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1981Date of Patent: May 15, 1984Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: John M.
