  • Patent number: 4669296
Abstract: A roll stand has a frame, a pair of small-diameter and substantially parallel working rolls defining a workpiece nip, and respective journal blocks supporting the working rolls in the frame for rotation about substantially parallel axes flanking the nip. These working-roll journal blocks and the respective working rolls can be axially shifted in the frame and the working rolls can be bent positively and negatively, that is respectively convex and concave toward the workpiece. A pair of large-diameter and substantially parallel backup rolls flank and bear toward the nip on the working rolls. Respective journal blocks support the backup rolls in the frame for rotation about substantially parallel axes flanking and generally coplanar with the working-roll axes. A strip is passed repeatedly in a multipass run through the nip generally perpendicular to the plane while the working rolls are pressed against the workpiece to reduce its thickness.

  • Patent number: 4667546
Abstract: Chip separation is assured while turning work pieces, by causing an oscillating movement of the turning or lathe tool during the work piece rotation. The tool oscillation is controlled in response to the work piece rotation and so that the tool oscillates periodically along or rather relative to a line defined by the feed advance vectors of the tool movement. The oscillation amplitude corresponds approximately to half the effective feed advance path for each work piece revolution. The wave length of the oscillation has a magnitude such that it itself or an integral multiple thereof, plus a half wave length, is equal to the momentary respective work piece circumference at the instantaneous point of contact between the tool and the work piece. Several ways are possible for imparting an oscillating movement to the tool support or tool supports.

  • Patent number: 4666349
Abstract: A material removing tool wherein a substantially plate-like support of steel carries at least one annular cutter which is made of a harder metallic material capable of being soldered to the material of the support. The support has a centrally extending projection which is received in a complementary opening of the cutter, and the cutter has two or more substantially radially extending webs in register with grooves which weaken the cutter in the regions of the webs so that at least one of the webs breaks in response to soldering of the cutter to the support. The breaking of one or more webs is promoted by proper selection of the thermal expansion coefficients of the materials of the support and cutter. The provision of breaks in the webs, either as a result of bonding or as a result of utilization of cutter sections, ensures that each cutter section between two neighboring webs can be put to use independently of the condition of the other section or sections.

  • Patent number: 4656899
Abstract: Opposite ends of a silencer band having a plurality of weights attached thereto are coupled together by selective engagement of a clip member and one of the silencer band weights. To effect such engagement, the clip member comprises a connection portion including a pair of first leg members and an interconnecting first bight portion which together define a loop. Instead of being riveted to the silencer band, the clip member is also fixedly attached to another one of the silencer band weights by an attachment portion. The attachment portion includes second and third leg members each extending from one of the end portions of the first leg members and arranged in predetermined spaced apart parallel relation one to another. A fourth leg member reversely depends from the third leg member and defines a second bight portion.

  • Patent number: 4656896
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for positioning a point belonging to the cutting zone of a tool in a digitally controlled lathe. The process consists of obtaining the image of the contact point of the tool cutting zone in a virtual relative mark with two perpendicular axes and then bringing about coincidence between the origin of the relative mark and the rotation axis of the tool holder capstan. The process then involves bringing about coincidence between the chosen contact point and the origin of the relative mark. The contact point is then made to coincide with the intersection point of the axes of an absolute fixed reference mark.Application to the regulation of the position of a tool in a digitally controlled lathe.

  • Patent number: 4656897
Abstract: The cabinet of the numerical control device contains a memory, a frequency changer, an amplifier and two correcting units. A programing station with keyboard and mounted on the cabinet enables programing the memory. The control device further comprises an encoder and a DC motor. It shall be associated with a lathe mechanically controlled by cams. The encoder records the successive positions of the camshaft and transmits these informations to the memory. In accordance with these informations the latter transmits mandatory instructions to the frequency changer and to the amplifier which modify the motor speeds and, consequently, those of the spindle and of the camshaft, to an extent dictated to the memory by the keyboard. At the beginning of particular machining steps the memory can activate the correcting units thus permitting to modify the instructions of the memory in order to find out the optimal speeds after some tests.
