  • Patent number: 4610576
Abstract: A single-tooth cutter for sloping the axial face of gears, in which the gear which is to be worked performs a continuous or step-by-step rotary movement whereby successive rotations of the single-tooth cutter will cause a working on successive teeth at least one sloped surface, and in which the workpiece and the single-tooth cutter after each workpiece rotation approach one another, until the desired sloped shape is reached, the chip removal occurring through the provision of at least two edges which in peripheral direction are arranged one directly behind the other. A cutter which can also be used for this has two edges which act one directly after the other, which edges can have a different distance from the axis of rotation of the cutter.

  • Patent number: 4607550
Abstract: A crankshaft turning machine operating on the dual cam principle, in which the gyro cutterhead (51) is carried in an internal eccentric cam (11) and the latter in an external eccentric cam (15) rotatable in a housing, both cams being adjustable as to their mutual position. For purposes of avoiding the creation of flattened portions at the crankpins to be machined at the transition from the plunge cut to the circular feed, the design is such that the transition from the plunge cut turning process to the circular feed turning process takes place without any feed stop phase.

  • Patent number: 4607549
Abstract: A face turning head for machining stations, comprises a drive mechanism for displacing the tool slide transversely. A drive shaft drives a worm gear or its equivalent through a transmission element, such as a cog belt transmission to axially displace a setting rod. This axial movement of the setting rod, which is independent of the rotation of the turning head but can be effected simultaneously therewith, actuates a gib key drive by which a tool slide is displaced transversely to the turning head axis. Through reversing rollers and displaceable blocks, the centrifugal disequilibrium caused by the tool slide movement is compensated for.

  • Patent number: 4606679
Abstract: A cutting tool for improved chip forming material removal efficiency over a wide mid-range of typically used feed rates and depths of cut is disclosed in a preferred form of an indexable polygonal cutting insert. A first chip control groove of uniform width and cross section radius extends from a cutting edge at each side of the polygon and terminates inwardly from the edge in a second chip control groove having a cross section of larger radius but of lesser depth than that of the first chip control groove. The second groove has its largest width at a point substantially midway between adjacent cutting corners of the polygon and diminishes to zero width at the end of each straight cutting edge, the first groove continuing around a substantial corner radius adjoining adjacent ends of the straight portions of such grooves.

  • Patent number: 4606248
Abstract: A cutting tool comprises a bit-holder fed at a prescribed feed amount f per revolution in a feeding direction and a throw-away tip made of superhard metal and including a rake face, an bottom face parallel to the rake face, and cutting blade edges. The throw-away tip is provided with recess on at least one of the rake and bottom faces thereof. A distance w3 between a side surface defining the recess and the cutting blade edge in the feeding direction is defined within a range satisfying the following formula represented by; f.ltoreq.w3.ltoreq.5f. Therefore rare and expensive cutter material can be saved, and the throw-away tip can be prevented from being damaged by cutting heat because its radiating area is made larger.

  • Patent number: 4602897
Abstract: A cutting insert and, in one embodiment, a grooving cutter, is formed so that multiple cutting edges are disposed in the cutting path. Rectangular cutting inserts and radial cutting inserts are contemplated. The rectangular shape is most suited for small tools and equally so for internal applications. Multiple radial cutting inserts can be mounted equally radially disposed, but differently angularly disposed from each other, for providing a grooving cutter. The cutting inserts and tool assemblies thereof may be used for OD grooving, threading, relieving, trepanning, face grooving, slotting and milling.

  • Patent number: 4602539
Abstract: A dual spindle assembly is provided which has a hollow outer member having an inner member rotatably and eccentrically mounted therein. The inner spindle member has a mounting hole defined eccentrically in one end for engaging a cutting tool. In order to make possible a continuous change in the radius of revolution of the cutting tool about the axis of the outer spindle member, a plurality of worms extend parallel to the spindle assembly and are geared to one another for joint rotation. Ball nuts on the worms travel back and forth along the same with the bidirectional rotation thereof. Rigidly interconnecting the ball nuts, a connector surrounds the spindle assembly via a ring rotatably mounted therein. The ring has an inward projection making threaded engagement with the inner spindle member through a slot cut longitudinally in the outer spindle member. The linear travel of the ring with the ball nuts results in the rotation of the inner spindle member relative to the outer.

  • Patent number: 4602540
Abstract: A precision machining system for machining a workpiece into a desired surface with two tool driving units. A first drive unit moves the tool along at least two axes to shape the workpiece similar to a desired surface. A second drive unit moves the tool along one of the axes in a very finely controlled manner. A measuring unit measures the tool position with an accuracy higher than that to which the first drive unit can respond. A signal producing unit is responsive to the measuring unit for producing a control signal for controlling the operation of the second drive unit while the first drive unit is operating.

  • Patent number: 4601223
Abstract: A flail tube cutter having an elongated cutting head circumscribed by a generally circular cutting blade, a means of rotating this cutting head, and a flexible shaft for coupling the cutting head to the rotating means is disclosed herein. The circular cutting blade of the cutting head includes a serration for defining two cutting teeth. Additionally, the cutting head includes a top portion located above the cutting blade for increasing the impact force of these cutting teeth against the inside wall of the tube being cut. The flail tube cutter of the invention provides a fast-acting tube cutter having a relatively small diameter which is easily snaked through tubes having local restrictions caused by either dents or internally mounted sleeves.

  • Patent number: 4596170
Abstract: A bar stock guiding device for use with automatic lathes comprises two cushions which have the shape of semicylindrical annuli. The cushions are applied against each other in a recess of a freely rotatable sleeve. This sleeve is located between the lathe and a tube of the guiding device which contains the bar of stock fed to the lathe. The sleeve normally rotates with the bar of stock, because the opening appearing between the cushions is adjusted with minimal small free play only to avoid whipping of the bar in the cushions and the propagation of vibrations to the stock bar part extending in the working area of the tools. When the pusher passes through the sleeve, it ejects the cushions out of the sleeve recess. Before this ejection occurs, a braking mechanism reduces the speed of rotation of the sleeve to a substantial extent.
