  • Patent number: 4655105
Abstract: An improved method of forming a relatively thin elongated metal product is disclosed. In forming the product, a workpiece is first tensioned with a relatively high axial tension force and then is tensioned with a reduced axial tension force. The workpiece is supported against sidewise movement with a pair of rolls having outer side surfaces which engage the surface of the workpiece throughout the axial extent of a major portion of the workpiece. The thickness of the workpiece is reduced along at least a major portion of the workpiece while the reduced tension force is maintained and the workpiece is supported by the rolls. Although the method of the present invention could be utilized to form solid workpieces, it is particularly advantageous in forming tubular workpieces having thin wall sections with a thickness of 0.050 inches or less.

  • Patent number: 4655648
Abstract: A router tool and a cutting insert for transverse cutting of a work piece, preferably of fiber reinforced plastics. The router comprises a shank and a cylindrical router body having chip gullets and sites that have received cutting inserts. Each insert has a cutting edge which has a number of teeth extending in the rotational direction of the router. The inserts are staggered in the axial direction such that the router varying will present a right-handed cutting edge portion and a left-handed cutting edge portion whereby the work piece may be machined without producing defective burrs and fluffy fibers.

  • Patent number: 4653361
Abstract: The slicing machine has a mounting table carrying the workpiece to be sliced by the cutting blade. The mounting table is supported on an elastically deformable measuring plate of which the deformation is measured by a measuring transducer in a position as near as possible to the plane of the cutting blade wherein the cutting force is acting. The measuring transducer has very high sensitivity in order to detect deformations in the order of fractions of a .mu.m and is thus able to properly detect the value of the cutting force. The measuring system is spaced from the cutting blade and workpiece and does not hinder manipulation and accurate fine adjustment of the workpiece. On the other hand the accuracy of the measurement does not depend on the manner in which the workpiece is mounted. Preferably deflection of the cutting blade from its plane under the influence of the cutting force is also detected and an optimum control and supervision of the cutting process may be effected based on both measurements.

  • Patent number: 4653360
Abstract: A turning machine is characterized by a new and improved control and mechanism for positioning the turning tool on the head. A CNC control issues command signals for selectively positioning the tool on the head. These signals are developed from an encoder which provides the instantaneous position of the rotating part being turned and from a program in the CNC containing information about the part. A closed loop control system receives these command signals and converts same into a control current for a linear motor which is the prime mover controlling the positioning of the tool on the head. The linear motor operates a carriage on the head and the cutting tool mounts on the carriage opposite the connection of the linear motor to the carriage. The carriage is a hollow bar guided on the head by sets of rollers which are cooperatively arranged to provide yieldably forceful constraint of the bar.

  • Patent number: 4649779
Abstract: The device comprises a distributor with switching valves and individual circuits of hydraulic fluid under pressure and of vacuum, the switching valves permitting to connect the guiding tubes either to the circuit of fluid under pressure or to the circuit of vacuum. The guiding tube which encloses a remnant of a bar stock in which a last piece is machined is set under vacuum for retracting the feeding piston of this guiding tube toward the rear part of the device in an extension tube during the indexing of the barrel at the time of machining the last piece. This permits to supress the unproductive time normally necessary for retracting the feeding piston of the guiding tube in which a new bar stock to be machined must be introduced.

  • Patent number: 4648295
Abstract: Method for producing workpieces having polygonal outer and/or inner contours, preferably by machining, wherein the workpiece to be machined rotates at a constant speed about a stationary axis, while the tool is guided on a closed, curved path, with the rate of rotation of the workpiece and the speed at which the tool revolves on its curved path being dependent upon one another and wherein further the tool engages at the workpiece during the entire revolution. The traveling speed of the tool during one revolution is varied according to a law of motion which is defined by the stationary rotation of the workpiece, the path of movement of the tool and the desired polygonal contour. The tool is guided, preferably translatorily, on a circularly cylindrical path.

  • Patent number: 4640157
Abstract: A process for loading a lathe in which a new bar to be machined is introduced laterally into a guide-bar device in form of a tube during the machining of a last piece at the end of a preceding bar. The new bar causes the ejection of the remnant of the preceding bar by pushing against the rear of the preceding bar. A device for loading a lathe with bars to be machined comprises a guide-bar device in form of a tube having two parts which can be opened for laterally introducing a new bar to be machined into the tube. The bar in the tube is fed by a hydraulically controlled push-piston. Pressure pistons press the two parts of the tube against each other in order to ensure a fluid tight seal. Return pistons are utilized radially move the upper part of the tube at the time of loading.

  • Patent number: 4640156
Abstract: Short metal fibers are directly produced from a work metal block. The product fibers are very thin and short, e.g., 200 .mu.m in diameter and 20 mm in length to the maximum. A bar like or pillar like metal bar is rotated, to which an elastic cutting tool is contacted. The entering width of cutting edge corresponds to length of fiber to be obtained. The tool is effected with fine feed and at the same time positively generated with self excited vibrations. The self excited vibration forcibly separates and divides a thin layer fiber accumulating at the cutting edge of the tool one by one without having connections in length of the fibers to each other. The process produces needle like fibers of microscopic cross sectional area. The thin and short metal fibers are produced in the same number as number of the self excited vibrations, and the fiber is right angled in axis with the cutting direction.

  • Patent number: 4638694
Abstract: Pistons and cylinders are manufactured to an oval shape, which is defined as being an oval where the ratio of the major axis to the major axis is between 1.1:1 and 3:1. Pistons and cylinders are generally finish machined by relative rotation between the tool and the workpiece and movement of the tool in a defined path to produce a finished profile. In general, however, conventional machine tools cannot machine such oval profiles at commercial production rates because of the excessively high tool accelerations which this would involve and of which the conventional machine tools are not capable. Disclosed are a machine tool for matching such oval pistons in which an oval piston blank is rotated in a path such that, when each part of the piston surface reaches the tool, it is at a constant datum position. Thus the tool considers that it is machining a surface of constant radius and normal tool movements can be performed.
