Patent number: 6817860Abstract: A catalytic combustor includes a plurality of channels formed by corrugated and flat strips, some of the channels being coated with a catalyst and others being uncoated. In the vicinity of the inlet end of the combustor, the boundary of each coated channel has a thermal barrier, to inhibit the flow of heat from the coated channel to an adjacent uncoated channel. Also in the vicinity of the inlet end, the coated channels may include one or more additional coated members, to enhance catalytic combustion in the light-off zone. The combustor of the present invention lights off at a relatively low temperature, and quickly reaches a stabilized and controlled operating temperature.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2002Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Assignee: Catacel Corp.Inventor: William A. Patent number: 6814569Abstract: A safety mechanism in a utility lighter which includes a lever spring and cam mechanism having a fuel release lever and the safety button. When the cam mechanism is in the locked position, the lever spring blocks the stopper tab preventing depression of the trigger, and the fuel release lever closes the fuel release valve. As the safety button is depressed, the lever spring is moved out of alignment with the stopper tab to permit depression of the trigger, the hub rotates, and the fuel release lever is actuated to open the fuel-release valve. As the safety button is released, the lever spring urges the cam mechanism into the locked position.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2001Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Inventor: Kil Yong Sung

Patent number: 6805114Abstract: An attachment for gas grills with automatic ignition gas burner includes a two-way, plunger actuated valve remotely mounted from the cooking area immediately around the burner. The valve plunger is actuated by an arm or actuator rod B having a pivotal mounting C shielded from the cooking area. Attached to the arm is a ring or actuator member E that provides a large contact area allowing actuation by the periphery of a cooking utensil. Placing the utensil over the burner depresses the ring against the force of the torsion spring D actuating the valve, allowing gas to flow to the burner where it is automatically ignited for cooking. Removal of the utensil closes the valve, shutting off the flow of gas, thus extinguishing the flame at the burner.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2002Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Inventors: Thomas Hobson Outten, George Steven Hampton

Patent number: 6805550Abstract: The method of the invention concerns operation of a furnace utilizing a hydrogen-rich gas as furnace fuel. The furnace has multiplicity of burners for burning fuel supplied thereto. The method comprises providing ignition means for lighting a flame at at least one burner of the multiplicity of burners. An oxygen-containing gas and a combustible gas comprising a hydrocarbon gas are supplied to each of the multiplicity of burners in amounts capable of forming an ignitable mixture. A flame is ignited at the predetermined one burner which is then allowed to propagate from the at least one predetermined burner to the other burners of the multiplicity of burners. Then the composition of the combustible gas is altered over a period of time so as to replace at least a major part of the hydrocarbon gas by a hydrogen-rich gas until a hydrogen flame is established at each of the multiplicity of burners.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2003Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Assignee: Davy Process Technology LimitedInventors: Michael Hilton, John Wilson Kippax

Patent number: 6796301Abstract: A baking oven for producing baked molded bodies has a baking line that extends along a plane from an input station to an output station. The baking molds are each formed of a bottom baking plate and a top baking plate that is set down onto the top surface of the lower baking plate. The baking molds are transported through the baking line by a lower conveyor that carries the lower mold halves. An upper conveyor above the baking line transports the upper mold halves through their path of revolution above the plane of the baking line with the plates suspended and substantially horizontally aligned and with the baking surfaces always facing down. At the beginning of the baking line, the upper conveyor sets the top baking plates, which are substantially horizontally aligned, down onto the bottom baking plates for forming the baking molds, and at the end of the baking line, it lifts them from the bottom baking plates for opening the baking molds.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2003Date of Patent: September 28, 2004Assignee: Franz Haas Waffelmaschinen-Industrie AktiengesellschaftInventors: Franz Haas, Johann Haas, Fritz Obermaier

Patent number: 6786716Abstract: A microcombustor comprises a microhotplate and a catalyst for sustained combustion on the microscale. The microhotplate has very low heat capacity and thermal conductivity that mitigate large heat losses arising from large surface-to-volume ratios typical of the microdomain. The heated catalyst enables flame ignition and stabilization, permits combustion with lean fuel/air mixtures, extends a hydrocarbon's limits of flammability, and lowers the combustion temperature. The reduced operating temperatures enable a longer microcombustor lifetime and the reduced fuel consumption enables smaller fuel supplies, both of which are especially important for portable microsystems applications. The microcombustor can be used for on-chip thermal management and for sensor applications, such as heating of a micro gas chromatography column and for use as a micro flame ionization detector.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2003Date of Patent: September 7, 2004Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Timothy J.
