  • Patent number: 4904171
Abstract: A lubricating device for clay or ceramic extruders in the form of a separable lubricating ring inserted between the exit end of the extruder casing or barrel and the entrance end of the die. The lubricating ring includes an annular outer member having a substantially cylindrical inner wall. A frustoconical liner is affixed to the inner wall in such a manner as to form a reservoir therebetween and deliver a variably controlled supply of lubricant to the clay column at the entrance to the forming die. The frustoconical shape of the liner provides a negative angle of impingement between the clay and the lubricating ring resulting in longer life of the liner and an improved penetration of lubricant into the clay or ceramic material.

  • Patent number: 4900156
Abstract: Apparatus for mixing material in a twin screw extruder by longitudinally advancing material by the interengaging threads of two screws in the housing of a twin screw extruder such that a plurality of separate streams of material are advanced by the threads of the screws, combining the separate streams of material in a thread-free zone of the screws in which the passage area for the streams of material undergoes uniform reduction and lateral displacement around one of the screws, and thereafter dividing the combined stream back into separate streams downstream of the thread-free zone. In the thread-free zone, a baffle element is mounted on the shaft of one of the screws, the baffle element being of conical shape and increasing uniformly in diameter in the direction of advance of the product.

  • Patent number: 4898527
Abstract: An apparatus for liquefying a thermoplastic, high-polymer material has a supply container for the thermoplastic material, heating means for heating the material in the supply container, a base part disposed beneath the supply container and containing a collecting trough for the liquefied thermoplastic material and control means regulating the heating means in dependence upon a comparison between a predetermined desired value and an actual value detected by a sensor. In order to be able to follow even rapid changes of the operating conditions the amount of liquefied thermoplastic material conveyed out of the collecting trough is detected as actual value and supplied to the control means; a suitable measure of this amount is in particular the speed of rotation of a pump serving as conveying means to convey the liquefied material from the collecting trough.

  • Patent number: 4893999
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for the continuous production of polymers and copolymers of water-soluble monomers particularly acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid, optionally with additional comonomers, by the polymerization of an aqueous monomer solution that is introduced into the trough that is formed by an endless conveyor belt. The trough-like shape of the conveyor belt changes continuously into an extended flat profile during the polymerization process; starting from the side edges and working towards the center of the trough formed by the conveyor belt, the resulting polymer gel strand is released continuously during the transition of the curved trough-like shape of the conveyor belt into the extended, flat form.

  • Patent number: 4892471
Abstract: A steam venting extruder feeder is provided for gravity feeding of flowable solid materials into a food extruder downstream of the first normal first zone feed port. The steam venting extruder feeder feeds the material down a tube while simultaneously venting steam from within the extruder around the periphery of the feed tube inside an outer tube in which compressed air is forced to assist in the flow of steam and pulls air in with the feed material preventing steam condensation and build-up in the feed tube.

  • Patent number: 4886234
Abstract: A connecting element is provided for connecting together adjacent shuttering panels of the kind in which reinforcement strips with rows of holes provided therein are arranged at the edges of the shuttering panels and are dipsosed perpendicular thereto. The connecting element consists essentially of a curved lever arm (13) which tapers from a spigot part (17) to an end surface (18). The spigot part (17) adjoins a handle portion of the connecting element at a flange (16') defining an abutment edge (16). The handle portion is curved in essentially U-shaped manner and has a support surface (20) at the inside of its limb connected to the spigot portion (17). In operation the engagement end (18) of the lever arm is first introduced through two aligned holes in the adjacent reinforcement strips of two adjacent shuttering panels and the connecting element is then rotated about the abutment edge (16) so as to cause the spigot part (17) to enter into the two aligned bores.

  • Patent number: 4884960
Abstract: A honeycombed structure is extruded and wash coat applied to the interior channels of the structure before the honeycomb structure is separated from the die in which it is formed. This method produces the honeycombed structure using a die that includes a die body having an inlet and an outlet side, a plurality of parallel pins defined by the body that correspond to the shape of the channels in the honeycombed structure, and a discharge zone that communicates directly with the outlet side of the die and is defined by the open area between the pins. The extrudable material enters the discharge zone from a series of feed passages defined by the pins and a plurality of webs that interconnect the pins. Each pin has an interior duct with an opening at the end of each pin. A series of internal passages in the die body receive fluid from one or more ports on the periphery of the die and distribute the fluid to the ducts.

  • Patent number: 4877390
Abstract: A degassification device for a screw extruder which processes plastic material in which the extruder has a hollow housing and an extruder screw rotatable in the housing, the degassification device having a pair of degassification screws disposed adjacent to the extruder screw for rotation about axes parallel to the axes of rotation of the extruder screw. A housing headpiece accommodates the degassification screws and is in communication with the extruder housing such that gas and vapor produced in the extruder housing can flow radially therefrom into the housing headpiece for discharge therefrom. The degassification screws have threads which interengage one another and they are driven in the same direction of rotation. The housing headpiece has adjacent longitudinal bores which overlap one another and respectively receive the degassification screws therein with their threads interengaged with one another.
