  • Patent number: 5957019
Abstract: The invention relates to a cutting apparatus for cutting out at least one strip from a roll with rolled up sheet like material. The apparatus is equipped with finger means which lift out a suitable distance from the roll the layer from which the strip will be cut out. A cutting tool means is placed near each finger means in order to cut through the material. Each cutting tool means is a motordriven, rotating blade driven with a peripheral speed which is considerably higher than the speed with which the cutting apparatus is moved along the roll, or an oscillating knife or the like. During the cutting out operation the cut out strip is rolled up on a rotating roll core means with a torque-adapted rotation. A strip-tensioning arrangement distributes the tensile forces from the rotating roll core means to the strip at the middle of the width of the strip and is placed at the middle of the width of the strip between the cutting tool means and the roll core means.

  • Patent number: 5887506
Abstract: A high speed rotary cutter assembly for cutting sheets of elastomeric materials wherein a rotary blade is affixedly mounted on one end of a spindle and rotates therewith at a rotational speed greater than 2000 rpm. The rotary blade includes a generally planar cutting surface and a tapered back surface to provide a clean cut and minimize abrasion of the cut surface. The rotary blade further includes between 4 and 40 peripheral lobes, each having an attack surface and a trailing surface. The trailing surface is cut more sharply than the attack surface to provide relief to the cut elastomeric material. The spindle includes a spindle bore which communicates cooling air to the rotary blade. The rotary cutter assembly also includes preloaded, permanently lubricated, angular contact ball bearings and a labyrinth seal to provide high speed operation without heat build-up.

  • Patent number: 5862727
Abstract: A laser arbor is provided that will display a cutting line on a work piece to be cut by a rotary saw. The laser is operated by a centrifugal switch mounted within the laser arbor along with a laser diode or the like and a battery. Because of the rotation of the laser with the blade and the persistence of the human eye, the moving light spot from the laser appears as a single line, hence it is not necessary as in the prior art to produce light divergence in the plane parallel to the blade plane. For that purpose, it is preferable to employ a light source having a wavelength that lies in a region to which the eye is sensitive, which in practice will typically mean a wavelength in the upper region of the red. Placement of the laser inwardly from the cutting surface of the blade eliminates the danger of any damage occurring to the laser as a result of debris from the cutting process.

  • Patent number: 5845555
Abstract: A multi-position adjustable work stop assembly employs a traveling gauge assembly that cooperates with independently adjustable and inexpensive location stops. The gauge assembly is moveable along a fence to define a plurality of work locating positions determined by the location stops. An engagement or contact member on the gauge assembly selectively intercepts the location stops to precisely locate the gauge assembly in the desired positions. The engagement member is an arm mounted for movement between first and second positions on the gauge assembly. In the first position the engagement member intercepts the location stops when the gauge assembly is moved longitudinally on the fence. In the second position the engagement member clears the location stops during such movement.

  • Patent number: 5839635
Abstract: A method and apparatus for curved-angle cleaving of optical fibers. The method requires the introduction of a flaw in an optical fiber to be cleaved, and the application of predetermined stress and strain to the optical fiber in the vicinity of the flaw to cause curved-angle cleaving of the optical fiber at the flaw. The apparatus of the present invention includes first and second pairs of optical fiber clamps separated by first predetermined distance, a flaw-producing device that produces a flaw in a fiber clamped between the clamps, and a force-applying device that applies a substantially concentrated force to the fiber at a second predetermined distance from the first pair of clamps, the flaw-producing device being located between the force-applying device and the second pair of optical fiber clamps at third predetermined distance from the force-applying device. The first, second and third predetermined distances are selected in order produce a curved-angle cleave in the optical fiber.
