  • Patent number: 8929350
Abstract: A personal area network (PAN) devices use a wireless medium shared with a wireless local area network (WLAN). WLAN devices communicate using WLAN protocols and PAN devices communicate using PAN protocols, allowing for lower power transmissions over the wireless medium relative to transmissions over the WLAN. A PAN coordinator device obtains access to the wireless medium for the PAN devices by signalling a reservation of the medium by the PAN coordinator device, such that the other devices defer use of the wireless medium, including at least one WLAN device, for a reservation period. During the reservation period, communication uses the PAN protocol. The signalling can be implicit such as a standard or modified HCCA-CF poll frame, a CTS frame with an increased duration field, or other variation. A PAN coordinator might also signal an access point to set up a DLS link with the PAN coordinator.

  • Patent number: 8891497
Abstract: Devices of a personal area network (PAN) use a wireless medium that is shared with a wireless local area network (WLAN) using power-efficient methods. PAN devices power up as needed to listen for frames. Once a PAN device determines that a frame is not for a PAN device, the PAN device can return to a power down state. In some cases, where a PAN coordinator determines that the wireless medium is congested, setting a PAN device backoff period during which the PAN device can remain in a power down state for an additional time period. Where collisions of PAN device frames are detected, differential backoffs for colliding PAN devices can be assigned. Where the PAN coordinator device needs to send precursor frames into the wireless medium prior to communications with the PAN device, it can arrange for PAN devices to remain powered down during at least a part of the time period during which a precursor frame is being transmitted.

  • Patent number: 8818365
Abstract: A method, device, and system for re-routing an incoming call via a stronger serving system. When a wireless communication device such as a cell phone is receiving an incoming call via a first serving system with which it is registered, the device may detect that a second serving system (possibly a competing carrier's system) would provide improved signal strength. In response, the device may prompt its user to request the call be re-routed to the device via the other serving system. If the user approves, the device may then signal to the network to cause the call to be re-routed to the device, and the device may register with the new serving system. That way, as the network sets up the call to the device again, the call will extend via the new (improved signal strength) serving system to the device, thus reducing the likelihood of a call drop.

  • Patent number: 8718592
Abstract: A facility for determining the location of a mobile device when a location determination of a desired accuracy is desired. If available, the facility determines the location of the mobile device using a device-based technique or using a location determination technique that is accessible over a macronetwork. Macronetworks are networks that are designed to cover relatively large areas. If a location determination technique of desired accuracy is not available on the device or over a macronetwork, the facility attempts to use a location determination technique that is accessible over a micronetwork to determine the location of the mobile device. Micronetworks are networks that are designed to cover smaller areas. By forcing a switch from a macronetwork-based location determination technique to a micronetwork-based location determination technique, the facility ensures that a location determination is made for the mobile device of a desired accuracy, time to fix (TTF), and/or yield.

  • Patent number: 8700071
Abstract: Multimedia message service (MMS) communications directly between mobile stations avoid interactions with a MMS Center (MMSC). In the examples, the originating station sends a short message service (SMS) message notifying the destination mobile station of the availability of the MMS message. This message provides an IP address of the originating station and an identifier for retrieval of the MMS message. In response, the destination mobile station sends back a packet message using the IP address of the originating station and the identifier, to request retrieval of the MMS message. The request message also includes an IP address for packet communication with the destination station. The originating mobile station uses that address for packet communication of the MMS message to the destination mobile station. In the examples, the destination station sends the MMS message to a regional node, for possible transcoding and/or to facilitate billing.
