  • Patent number: 9173143
Abstract: A method of controlling a communication control entity in a mobile communication network and a corresponding communication control entity are described. The communication control entity is a part of a pool of communication control entities. In accordance of the invention, when acting as a primary communication control entity and receiving a request for adding a new secondary communication control entity to the overall control procedure, the communication control entity of the invention is arranged to determine whether the requested new secondary communication control entity is a part of the pool or not. If it is a part of the pool, then the primary communication control entity established a direct connection to the access part. The requested communication control entity is not added to the control procedure as a relay.

  • Patent number: 9161184
Abstract: Text messages with alphanumeric addresses are delivered to mobiles and external short message entities (ESMEs) which do not support alphanumeric addressing, providing meaningful fallback handling. Additionally, the invention enables delivery of SMPP messages from ESME or SMPP networks which can only originate numeric addresses, yet provide for mapping to alphanumeric addresses for delivery to the mobile. A two-way mapping is provided between alphanumeric addresses and SMS short-codes to enable delivery of text messages with alphanumeric addressing in networks which contain mobiles and/or ESME's that lack support of alphanumeric addressing. An ESME can send a text message using an alphanumeric origination address, without knowing which handsets support the capability, and which do not, or whether handsets are on CDMA, or GSM, or UMTS, or networks, or can continue to send using a numeric origination address. The SMSC provides conversions to alphanumeric addresses on behalf of the ESME and the mobile.

  • Patent number: 9137844
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a wireless communication system, sends an initial connection request with the device capabilities of an indicated mobile station. The device capabilities comprise both semi-static capabilities and dynamic capabilities. The semi-static capabilities are stored in the core network. Data is transmitted via a wireless node before the mobile station transitions to an idle state. When transitioning back to an active state from the idle state when the semi-static capabilities have not changed, a connection request is sent with the dynamic capabilities of the user equipment without also transmitting the semi-static mobile station capabilities to the wireless node.

  • Patent number: 9036613
Abstract: A computing device is interfaced with other devices in a wireless personal area network (PAN) to enhance co-existence with a wireless local area network (WLAN), wherein the WLAN is characterized by a plurality of nodes intercommunicating for various network devices and the wireless PAN is characterized by lower power transmissions relative to transmissions over the WLAN. The computing device coordinates activity of the wireless PAN as a coordinator for the wireless PAN, including communicating with the wireless PAN devices using a protocol that is an overlay protocol only partially compliant with the protocol used over the WLAN but that enables co-existence. The WLAN can be an 802.11 wireless LAN. WLAN devices preferably can, upon hearing an overlay protocol frame, understand at least enough of the overlay protocol frame to defer use of a common wireless networking medium.

  • Patent number: 9030990
Abstract: A first wireless network serves a wireless device and generates loading information. A second wireless network also serves the wireless device and also generates loading information. The first and second wireless networks share a plurality of wireless access points. A paging system receives a page request for the wireless device for delivery over the first network. The paging system processes the loading information to determine if paging assistance from the second network is applicable. If so, the paging system transfers a first page to the second network for delivery to the wireless device. The paging system receives a page response from the wireless device over the second network and processes the response to identify the shared wireless access point serving the wireless device. The paging system transfers a second page to the first wireless network for delivery to the wireless device through the identified shared wireless access point.

  • Patent number: 8971913
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for position determination and other operations. In one embodiment of the present invention, a mobile station uses wireless signals from a plurality of wireless networks (e.g., with different air interfaces and/or operated by different service providers) for position determination (e.g., for data communication, for obtaining time and/or frequency information, for range measurement, for sector or altitude estimation). In one embodiment of the present invention, mobile stations are used to harvest statistical data about wireless access points (e.g., the locations of mobile stations that have received signals from the wireless access points, such as from cellular base stations, wireless local area network access points, repeaters for positioning signals, or other wireless communication transmitters) and to derive location information (e.g., position and coverage area of the wireless access points) for the wireless networks from the collected statistical data.
