Patent number: 8069022Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed whereby a point on an ear impression model to be labeled is selected and a shape context is determined for that point. This shape context is then compared to average shape contexts for different regions on a reference ear impression model, also referred to herein as an ear impression shape atlas. A cost function is used to determine the minimum cost between the shape context for the selected point and one of the average shape contexts. Once the minimized cost is determined, the region label corresponding to the average shape context having a minimized cost is assigned to that point. In this way, points on the surface of an ear impression are classified and labeled as being located in regions corresponding to the regions on the ear impression shape atlas.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2006Date of Patent: November 29, 2011Assignee: Siemens CorporationInventors: Gregory G. Patent number: 8019575Abstract: The present invention improves in one aspect the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of fixed-step solvers when simulating a physical system that does not change in energy at the critical event. The present invention uses the energy of the error as the figure of merit in finding the first state of the system under the new constraints. The present invention enables a fixed-step solver to be more robust even when the critical event falls between two time samples. The present invention may also be applied to variable-step solvers. Moreover, the present invention may also be used to simulate a physical system when the energy changes at the critical event in the physical system.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2006Date of Patent: September 13, 2011Assignee: The MathWorks, Inc.Inventors: Victor Chudnovsky, Jeff Wendlandt

Patent number: 8005658Abstract: A hybrid evolutionary algorithm (“HEA”) technique is described for automatically calculating well and drainage locations in a field. The technique includes planning a set of wells on a static reservoir model using an automated well planner tool that designs realistic wells that satisfy drilling and construction constraints. A subset of these locations is then selected based on dynamic flow simulation using a cost function that maximizes recovery or economic benefit. In particular, a large population of candidate targets, drain holes and trajectories is initially created using fast calculation analysis tools of cost and value, and as the workflow proceeds, the population size is reduced in each successive operation, thereby facilitating use of increasingly sophisticated calculation analysis tools for economic valuation of the reservoir while reducing overall time required to obtain the result. In the final operation, only a small number of full reservoir simulations are required for the most promising FDPs.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2007Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: Peter Gerhard Tilke, William J. Patent number: 7996196Abstract: A first generation portion divides an object to be analyzed into a plurality of finite elements to generate element division data. A first calculation portion defines and calculates a plurality of meshes dividing the object to be analyzed into units larger than the finite elements. A second generation portion assumes that a friction layer which has a thickness of “0” and a friction coefficient between a conductive material and a composite material of a predetermined value less than 1 exists at the interface between the conductive material and the composite material, and the second generation portion generates mesh data. A second calculation portion uses various solvers to calculate the physical amounts produced in the object to be analyzed on the basis of the mesh data and outputs the analysis result. In other words, the second calculation portion performs a simulation of the behavior of the object to be analyzed.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2009Date of Patent: August 9, 2011Assignee: Fujitsu LimitedInventors: Daisuke Mizutani, Nobutaka Itoh

Patent number: 7970593Abstract: A method for gradually modifying a geological model representative of an underground reservoir to respect fixed average proportions of lithologic facies. A group of facies is selected and a subgroup of associated facies are selected. A transformation parameter is defined by the ratio between the average proportions of the facies of the association and the selection. Within the context of historical matching, a difference between measured dynamic data values and values calculated by a flow simulator from the geological model is measured. An optimization algorithm is used to obtain therefrom a new value for the transformation parameter that minimizes the difference and the transformation is applied to the lithologic facies of the selection. The modification can be applied to the entire model or to a given zone.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2008Date of Patent: June 28, 2011Assignee: IFPInventors: Frédéric Roggero, Guillaume Enchery, Catherine Ponsot-Jacquin

Patent number: 7953579Abstract: The computer-implementable method allows for the fast creation of a multi-unit interval data signal suitable for simulation. The created signal represents the output of an otherwise ideal Discrete Time Filter (DTF) circuit, and the quick creation of the signal merely requires a designer to input the number of taps and their weights without the need of laying out or considering the circuitry of the DTF. A matrix is created based on a given data stream, and the number of taps and weights, which matrix is processed to create the multi-unit-interval data signal. Noise and jitter can be added to the created signal such that it now realistically reflects non-idealities common to actual systems. The signal can then be simulated using standard computer-based simulation techniques.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2007Date of Patent: May 31, 2011Assignee: Micron Technology, Inc.Inventor: Timothy M.
