  • Patent number: 10079745
Abstract: A method and associated systems for using a software-defined network (SDN) controller to automatically test cloud performance. A bandwidth measuring and optimizing system associated with the SDN controller detects a triggering condition and, in response, directs a network-management tool to measure a bandwidth of a segment of a physical infrastructure of a network and directs the SDN controller to provision a virtual machine that then measures a bandwidth of a corresponding segment of virtual infrastructure that is overlaid upon the physical segment. In some embodiments, these two tests are synchronized so as to concurrently measure physical and virtual bandwidths while the same test data passes through the virtual infrastructure segment. The measured bandwidth of the virtual segment is then compared to the measured bandwidth of the physical segment in order to determine an efficiency of the virtual network.

  • Patent number: 8320298
Abstract: Parallel demodulators are provided in field units. Forward and reverse channel allocation information may be broadcast to the field units in the same epoch as traffic data but on first and second channels, such as paging and traffic channels. This assures that all field units are able to receive forward and reverse channel allocation information every epoch. By having parallel demodulators in the field unit, switching between the first and second channels is avoided and channel allocation information is not lost.

  • Patent number: 8027249
Abstract: Methods for using a detector to monitor and detect channel occupancy are disclosed. The detector resides on a station within a network using a framed format having a periodic time structure. When non-cooperative transmissions are detected by the network, the detector assesses the availability of a backup channel enabling migration of the network. The backup channel serves to allow the network to migrate transparently when the current channel becomes unavailable. The backup channel, however, could be occupied by another network that results in the migrating network interfering with the network already using the backup channel. Thus, the detector detects active transmission sources on the backup channel to determine whether the backup channel is occupied. Methods for using the detector include scheduling detection intervals asynchronously. The asynchronous detection uses offsets from a reference point within a frame.

  • Patent number: 8014356
Abstract: A machine-implementable method of optimizing the performance of a wireless network includes collecting, with a first discovery component of the wireless network, a first set of information describing at least one transmission characteristic of each access point of a first set of at least one access points within a detection area of the first discovery component. Each access point of the first set transmits data over a respective channel of a set of channels. The method further includes determining, based on the first-set information, an optimal channel of the set of channels, the optimal channel having associated therewith the lowest probability of interference with the channels over which the access points of the first set are transmitting.

  • Patent number: 8014411
Abstract: Service providers can reduce multiple overlay networks by creating multiple logical service networks (LSNS) on the same physical or optical fiber network. The LSNs are established by the service provider and can be characterized by traffic type, bandwidth, delay, hop count, guaranteed information rates and/or restoration priorities. Once established, the LSNs allow the service provider to deliver a variety of services to customers depending on customer's traffic specifications. Different traffic specifications are serviced on different LSNS, depending on each LSN's characteristics. Such LSNS, once built within a broadband network, can be customized and sold to multiple customers.

  • Patent number: 8004979
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed that enable taking into consideration the variation in channel occupancy of a particular terminal or terminals during the call admission process. A channel utilization manager accounts for the probabilistic nature of the call admission decision by using a pre-determined, statistically justified value to represent the channel occupancy. The “per-call” channel occupancy value is determined by a number of factors, including the shared-communications channel data rate. Channel occupancy is incorporated into one or more cumulative distribution functions (CDF), which are evaluated by the channel utilization manager as part of the call admission process. In turn, each channel-occupancy CDF of a shared-communications channel can be generated from a CDF of the terminals' data rates on that channel, which data rates can be determined analytically or empirically.

  • Patent number: 8005036
Abstract: Provided is an apparatus and method for scheduling for collaborative spatial multiplexing in a broadband wireless communication system. An apparatus for a base station for supporting collaborative spatial multiplexing in a broadband wireless communication system includes a controller, an estimator, and a determiner. The controller selects a second mobile station with the best channel quality among non-scheduled mobile stations. The estimator estimates a load and transmitting (TX) power of the second mobile station. The determiner is used to adjust a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) level of the second mobile station so that a total load of first and second mobile stations when coupled does not exceed a first threshold value and also the power of the second mobile station does not exceed a second threshold value.

  • Patent number: 8000326
Abstract: Techniques for sending control information are described. In an aspect, information to send in a control message may be fragmented into multiple parts, with each part including information of a particular type. The multiple parts may be segregated into multiple categories such as dynamic, semi-static, and static. A full message containing all parts may be generated and sent at a first rate. A first partial message containing parts in the dynamic category may be generated and sent at a highest rate. A second partial message containing parts in the semi-static category may be generated and sent at a second rate that is slower than the highest rate. A third partial message containing parts in the static category may be generated and sent at a third rate that is slower than the second rate.

  • Patent number: 7990911
Abstract: A method and apparatus to determine whether a transmission was successfully received in a multiple access communication system is claimed. First and second encoded data packets are received and decoded. The first and second data packets are then re-encoded, and correlated to determine whether the first and second re-encoded data packets are the same. If there is a high degree of correlation, an indicator of acknowledgement is transmitted to indicate that there is a high degree of correlation between the first and second re-encoded data packets. If there is a low degree of correlation, a determination is made that the previously transmitted indicator of acknowledgement was correctly received.

  • Patent number: RE42600
Abstract: A pipeline-based matching scheduling approach for input-buffered switches relaxes the timing constraint for arbitration with matching schemes, such as CRRD and CMSD. In the new approach, arbitration may operate in a pipelined manner. Each sub-scheduler is allowed to take more than one time slot for its matching. Every time slot, one of them provides a matching result(s). The sub-scheduler can use a matching scheme such as CRRD and CMSD.
