  • Patent number: 7447239
Abstract: One aspect of the invention provides an ingress apparatus comprising a signal processing apparatus for receiving an incoming data frame and locating the position of path overhead, and a monitoring apparatus arranged to extract information from the located path overhead. The ingress apparatus further includes an insertion apparatus for receiving, from the monitoring apparatus, information extracted from the path overhead of one or more signal path, and being further arranged to insert the extracted information into a respective data frame component which occupies a fixed position in a data frame. Thus, information which would normally occupy a non-fixed position in a data frame is moved to a fixed position. As a result, the information can subsequently be accessed without having to employ relatively complex apparatus for locating information which occupies a non-fixed position.

  • Patent number: 7447242
Abstract: In the face of data loss on connections between a content source and a content consumer, additional connections therebetween are opened. These additional connections are preferably opened between the content source and a proxy disposed between the content source and the content consumer. The proxy may then seam together data streams received from the content source across the additional connections in a recording on a computer-readable medium. The seamed stream may be constructed by filling in information gaps in any of the data streams received from the content source with content derived from others of the data streams received from the content source. This derivation may be made on the basis of identifying characteristics (e.g., packet contents) of packets from each of the data streams received from the content source.

  • Patent number: 7436793
Abstract: A system and method for effectively performing a transmit power adjustment procedure in a wireless network includes a forward receiver that monitors a wireless forward link for forward data that is transmitted over the wireless forward link by a forward transmitter. The forward transmitter initially transmits the forward data at a minimum power level, and gradually increases the minimum power level to a power level threshold at which the forward receiver first detects the forward data on the forward link. Once the forward receiver and the forward transmitter are successfully coupled over the wireless forward link, the forward transmitter may then transmit forward data at a normal operating power level. The foregoing transmit power adjustment procedure ensures that the forward receiver receives forward data only from the forward transmitter, and prevents other proximate wireless devices from inadvertently intercepting forward data transmitted by the forward receiver.

  • Patent number: 7436836
Abstract: Various methods and systems for detecting whether a network device supports a protocol, which defines a supplemental header, are disclosed. One method involves detecting a value within a preamble generated by a sending device and verifying that a header format of a header, also generated by the sending device, conforms to a header format definition of a protocol. The header format definition of the protocol defines a supplemental header. The preamble can be an Ethernet preamble. In one embodiment, the preamble is a converged data link (CDL) preamble or other type of preamble that is used to convey operation, administration and management (OAM) information.

  • Patent number: 7433306
Abstract: A method is disclosed for collecting data about the transmission of network packets that are associated with specified applications. The packets are transmitted through a communications network fabric that is used to couple data processing systems together. A particular existing single bit in a frame header definition is selected. The bit is defined as part of the standard frame header by a communication protocol as an available bit in the frame header. The standard protocol is unchanged by the selection of this bit. An application is specified to be monitored. The selected bit is then set in each network packet that is generated by the specified application. The fabric collects performance data for each packet that has the bit set. Thus, the fabric collects performance data about a transmission of each packet that is generated by the application when that application is setting the bit.

  • Patent number: 7424026
Abstract: Disclosed is a device, a computer program and a method to receive and buffer data packets that contain information that is representative of time-ordered content, such as a voice signal, that is intended to be presented to a person in a substantially continuous and substantially uniform temporal sequence; to decode the information to obtain samples and to buffer the samples prior to generating a playout signal. The samples are time scaled as a function of packet network conditions to enable changing the play-out rate to provide a substantially continuous output signal when the data packets are received at a rate that differs from a rate at which the data packets are created. The time scaling operation operates with a base delay that is controlled in a positive sense when the data packets are received at a rate that is slower than a rate at which the data packets are created, and a reserve delay that is managed to provide insurance against an interruption should the base delay become negative.

  • Patent number: 7397761
Abstract: A packet network employs restorable routing with service level guarantees. Restorable routing generates two disjoint paths through a network of nodes interconnected by links for a connection request demand between and ingress-egress node pair. Restorable routing employs minimum interference criteria to generate the two disjoint paths such that two disjoint paths cause little or no interference with demands of future connection requests between different ingress-egress pairs. Restorable routing generates maximum 2-route flows for the network ingress-egress node pairs to determine corresponding sets of 2-critical links. A reduced network is formed, its links are weighted based on criticality indices generated from the sets of 2-critical links, and the relatively optimal two disjoint paths are computed for the connection request. One of the two disjoint paths is selected as an active path for routing data of the connection request, and the other disjoint path is selected as the backup path.
