The outlet may include a hub (31, 41) that allows connecting both an analog video signal via an adapter, as well as retaining the data network connection, which may be accessed by a network jack (73). The invention may also be applied to a telephone line-based data networking system. In such an environment, the data networking circuitry as well as the analog video adapters are integrated into a telephone outlet, providing for regular telephone service, analog video connectivity, and data networking as well. In such a configuration, the outlet would have a standard telephone jack (71), an analog video jack (72) and at least one data networking jack (73).

Each of the peripheral devices is provided with an IP address, which facilitates direct communication of the users with the peripheral devices and permits direct communication with the devices over the Internet. Data packets destined for the IP address of a peripheral device are router through the local interface, which converts the data utilizing compatible communication protocols for the target peripheral device.

    Abstract: An input interface segments a variable length packet into plurality of fixed length cells and generates an internal switching information based on the header information of the variable length packet. The input interface transmits the information to a switch and, after that, transmits the cells as the following cells of the information to the switch. The switch performs switching processing to the succeeding cells based on the information. Therefore, the information is not added to the cells. When an input interface starts to transmit cells generated from a packet to its destination output interface through the switch, the switch is reserved until all the cells arrive at the output interfaces.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for increasing communication robustness between wireless communication devices by transmitting data on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) guard tones. In one embodiment, punctured bits are sent on the guard tones. In an alternate embodiment, the full bandwidth provided by the guard tones in used to determine the optimal puncture pattern. The present invention can also use guard tones to duplicate data from those tones which are experiencing channel interference. The receiver feeds back information about tones in interference, and the transmitter send the interfered data on the guard tones. Guard tones are used for sending feedback information to the transmitter in order to increase system robustness. This provides the transmitter with information on how to use the guard tones and adapt the transmission data rates to maximize system performance.
