  • Patent number: 4014184
Abstract: An improved propeller shaft liner of the type employed to damp propeller shaft vibrations and apparatus for inserting such liner into the propeller shaft. A tubular liner of paper is formed with a symmetrically disposed series of axially or helically extending groove-like indentations which provide the formed liner tube with a resiliently resisted radial and circumferential compressibility characteristic. This compressibility enables the liner to be inserted into a propeller shaft having an internal diameter less than the outer diameter of the liner, with the liner being symmetrically deformed to engage the shaft in an accurately centered position to achieve a proper rotary balance of the shaft. Apparatus for inserting the tube into a shaft is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4011737
Abstract: A device for the torque-transmissive securing of a disc which is formed of a brittle material, in particular a turbine wheel constituted of a ceramic material, onto a shaft. The disc is centered through the intermediary of two cone pairs with axial prestressing and the torque is transmitted to the shaft through a cylindrical extension of the wheel hub with longitudinal grooves formed on the outer circumference thereof; furthermore transmitted by means of a cylindrical bellshaped cover with symmetrically profiled longitudinal connectors in an inner bore which are conformed to the longitudinal grooves, and finally by rollers located between the concave side edges or slopes and the side walls of the longitudinal grooves in radial and tangential contact therewith, by means of the bell-shaped cover which is rigidly fixed on the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4010625
Abstract: The invention substantially increases the maximum break angle of the joint without increasing its overall size. This is achieved in taking advantage of the planetary movement of the shaft carrying the tripod and the rollers and providing in the free inner edge of the bell recesses the minimum depth of which recesses is calculated in accordance with the amplitude of the aforementioned planetary movement.

  • Patent number: 4008583
Abstract: A swingable tractor PTO shield assembly has an inverted, U-shaped, shield member which is slidably and swingably attached to bracket means on the tractor and which extends above and to the sides of the PTO shaft. The shield member has a plurality of notches on its tractor proximate side edges which slidably engage pins in the bracket to allow the shield member to be swung into and held in a plurality of positions. The shield assembly further includes a cover member swingable on the tractor and slidable on the shield member for covering the space between the tractor and the shield member and which in the lowered position abuts a raised portion on the shield member to prevent movement thereof while both are horizontal.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThis invention relates generally to shields for tractor power take-off shafts, commonly referred to as PTO shafts, and more particularly to shields that are used over the tractor proximate articulated joint of the PTO shaft.

  • Patent number: 4004434
Abstract: A low cost universal joint is disclosed, and the method for making the same, in which the smaller cross pin is transversely deformed in the region of intersection thereof with the main pin. In one embodiment, the transverse opening in the main pin is offset slightly from the center of the pin toward one end thereof, and pressing the main pin into a seated relation causes the slight deformation of the cross pin, thus capturing the pins in place. In another embodiment, the main pin is hollow, and the portion of the cross pin within the walls of the main pin is transversely deformed by inserting a punch through one end of the main pin and striking the exposed portion of the cross pin within the main pin, thus performing the transverse deformation and locking the pins in assembled relation within the universal joint.
