  • Patent number: 4702799
Abstract: A finely atomized liquid is projected in a stream and dried by contact with drying gas. The drying gas is projected in turbulent flow from opposite sides of the stream such flow being distributed along the length of the stream. The material may be atomized and projected by a jet of gas issuing from a nozzle, and the drying gas may be projected around the jet so that the drying gas meets the entrainment demand of the jet, thereby preventing recirculation of gases outside the jet.

  • Patent number: 4702792
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method of forming fine conductive lines, patterns, and connectors, and is particularly useful in the formation of electronic devices. The method comprises a series of steps in which: a polymeric material is applied to a substrate; the polymeric material is patterned to form openings through, spaces within, or combinations thereof in the polymeric material; subsequently, conductive material is applied to the patterned polymeric material, so that it at least fills the openings and spaces existing in the polymeric material; and excess conductive material is removed from the exterior major surface of the polymeric material using chemical-mechanical polishing, to expose at least the exterior major surface of the polymeric material.

  • Patent number: 4701305
Abstract: A device for sampling blood and measuring erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The device comprises a tube with one end closed, a blood sampling portion on an opened end of the tube and an erythrocyte sedimentation rate measuring portion extending from the blood sampling portion. A stopper is located on the open end of said tube, and may be pierced with a blood drawing needle. Finally a partition member is located within said tube and extends substantially over the entire length of said tube. Blood is directly sampled into the device and the device mixes the sampled blood with a solution of an anticoagulant with a high efficiency in the device. Accordingly, measurement of erythrocyte sedimentation rate can be performed quickly and easily.

  • Patent number: 4701353
Abstract: Preparation of granules by making nuclei grow, in a fluidized bed, by causing a liquid material to solidify thereon. The liquid material is sprayed in the bed upwards, with the aid of a spraying device provided with a central channel through which the liquid material is supplied, and a channel concentric therewith carrying a powerful gas stream, with the liquid material contacting the gas stream and being carried with the gas stream to a dilute zone where the growth of the nuclei takes place, which zone is created by the gas stream and is completely within the fluidized bed. The liquid material is made to come out of the central channel as a virtually closed, conical film, with a thrust exceeding the thrust of the gas stream, and this film is nebulized to very fine droplets with the aid of the gas stream. In this process a very small amount of high-energetic gas is needed, while no agglomeration occurs in the bed.

  • Patent number: 4699643
Abstract: This relates to improvements in drives for shears, particularly shears for severing gobs from a glass runner. All of the drives incorporate a drive pinion for reciprocating racks which are secured to slides of the shear. The pinion is rotated first in one direction and then in the opposite direction to cause the blades of the shear to first move together and shear a gob, and then move back to the original position. Suitable reversing motors may be utilized, including an electrical servomotor or suitable hydraulic motor. On the other hand, the drive motor may be of the unidirectional type and an oscillating drive member may be incorporated in the drive system for converting the one-directional drive of the motor to an oscillating or reversing output. In addition, the drive of the pinion may be supplemented by a double-acting air motor which is connected to one of the racks.

  • Patent number: 4698120
Abstract: Improved quartz barrier means for drawing dendritic silicon web from a silicon melt forms within the quartz crucible a silicon melt replenishment section and a web drawing section. To permit the molten silicon to flow from the melt replenishment section into the web drawing section, aperture means are provided in the form of cut-out sections in the lateral edges of the barrier means. The position of the aperture means above the bottom of the crucible insures an adequate pool of molten silicon to flow into the web drawing section. The position of the aperture means beneath the top level of the molten silicon insures that no unmelted silicon floating on the top of silicon in the replenishment section passes into the web drawing section. The position of the apertures next to the heated side walls of the crucible insure that the melted silicon is heated to an optimum temperature upon passing into the web drawing section.

  • Patent number: 4698154
Abstract: A modular unit as a filtering apparatus for a membrane separation process, especially for treating water by reverse osmosis, includes a pipe which is open at both ends. A stack of membranes adapted to the inner diameter of the pipe can be inserted into the pipe. The stack of filter elements, which includes guide plates, carrier plates, and membranes, is clamped together by a central clamping bolt which passes through the filter element stack between two fixed pressure plates. Located at the peripheries of the pressure plates are inclined circumferential grooves in which are disposed sealing rings which, when excess pressure exists in the interior of the housing, are urged radially and axially outwardly, and thus effect a good seal between the inner wall of the pipe and the peripheries of the pressure plates.

  • Patent number: 4698135
Abstract: A system is provided for use adjacent a plant supporting material to be irrigated, for converting salt water into fresh water and dispensing the fresh water dripwise to the plant supporting material. The system comprises an evaporator member made of microporous hydrophobic material and having first and second surfaces, the microporous hydrophobic material permitting water vapor to diffuse through the member between the first and second surfaces thereof while preventing liquid water from passing therethrough, and a condenser including a condensing surface is spaced from the second surface of the evaporator member to define a gap therebetween. The condensing surface is in liquid flow communication with the plant supporting material to be irrigated. A conduit is provided for conducting a flow of salt water along the first surface of the evaporator members.
