  • Patent number: 4715949
Abstract: A heavy metal separator for removing heavy metal particles and flakes from ore. It has a feed hopper which feeds a slurry of ore over an inclined screen in a separation chamber. The smaller particles pass through the screen into a second section of the separation chamber. The larger particles wave downwardly off the lower end of the screen into a first section of the separation chamber. A stream of water is directed by baffles upward through the second section counter current to the flow of materials. The water washes the less dense waste material out of the second section into the first section. The fine heavy metal particles and flakes, being more dense, settle downwardly to a collection point at the bottom of the second section. The larger concentrates and fine waste material move downwardly through the first section to an outlet, where they pass into a second separation chamber.

  • Patent number: 4714488
Abstract: A porous glass optical waveguide preform is formed by depositing a coating of glass particulate material on the lateral surface of a core which may be a porous glass body continuously produced by the axial deposition of glass particles. The core rotates and moves longitudinally in one direction with respect to two flame hydrolysis burners which emit streams of glass particles having different compositions. In addition, the two burners reciprocatingly move with respect to a portion of the length of the core. The speed of each burner varies as it traverses along its path of reciprocating motion. The thickness of the layer produced by a burner at a given point is inversely related to the speed of the burner as it passes that point. The layers formed by the completion of a single traverse by both burners combine to form a conically-shaped layer, the composition of which varies from the base toward the apex thereof.

  • Patent number: 4714520
Abstract: A process is disclosed for filling a trench in an integrated circuit structure without forming a void in the trench which, in a preferred embodiment, comprises partially filling the trench with an etchable material, etching the material in the trench with an etchant capable of removing material adjacent the top of the trench at a rate faster than the rate of removal adjacent the bottom of the trench, and then filling the remainder of the trench with the material; whereby the material deposited adjacent the top of the trench will not close off the trench prior to complete filling of the bottom of the trench with the material.

  • Patent number: 4714521
Abstract: The present invention relates to a twin wire former. It aims at resolving the difficulties with respect to the retention of fine raw material and the coupling strength in the thicknesswise direction of a paper sheet without deteriorating the formation and without causing problems associated with high speed operation. A top wire (34) is partly provided with a portion in which a water-impermeable belt (35) travels along the inside of its loop. Dewatering in this portion is effected only on one side, that is, on the side of the bottom wire (33). Also in this portion, wrapping angles for the wires (33) and (34) are varied by adjusting the positions of a plurality of rolls (3), (17) and (23) or shoes (14) and (18) to improve the formation, and thereafter, dewatering on the side where dewatering has been suppressed by the above-mentioned belt (35) is also effected.

  • Patent number: 4713105
Abstract: In the interest of producing high-strength splice connections between silica-based glass fibers a method of using a tri-particle flow of gases for flame fusion is disclosed. An outer relatively high-velocity flow of oxygen surrounds an intermediate, lower-velocity flow of chlorine or oxygen which in turn surrounds a central flow of H.sub.2, D.sub.2, NH.sub.3, or ND.sub.3.Particularly high strengths are achieved when a central flow of hydrogen or deuterium and an intermediate flow of chlorine are used in such a fashion as to heat fiber ends to be spliced to temperatures of 500 degrees C. and beyond only after these ends have been enveloped by chlorine.

  • Patent number: 4713147
Abstract: An extended nip press for a paper machine for removing water from a wet paper, cardboard or similar fibrous or porous web. The press comprises a rotating press roll and at least one loading shoe, which is pressed against the press roll so as to form an extended press zone. The loading shoe may pivot around an axis parallel to the axis of the press roll. The web to be dewatered is passed through the pressing zone together with at least one felt that receives water. The loading shoe is supported onto the support frame by the intermediate of a support means. The center of gravity of the support force applied by the support means to the shoe is displaceable in the direction of running of the web to be dewatered for the purpose of adjustment of the pressure pattern produced in the press zone when different paper qualities are run.

  • Patent number: 4710673
Abstract: An electron tube comprising a window having a radiation-sensitive layer. The window is laid on a bearing surface of an envelope normal to the tube axis. There is no sealing material in the seam between the bearing surface and the window. The seam is sealed hermetically by a mass of indium or an indium alloy in which a metal wire is embedded along the circumference of the seam. The wire can be soldered with indium or an indium alloy. • Patent number: 4710261
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for replenishing the depleted component of a multicomponent etching solution. A portion of the etching solution is analyzed with a UV detector to determine the concentration of the depleted component. An output signal is produced by the UV detector which is a function of the depleted component's concentration. In response to this output signal, a microprocessor is used to control the amount of make-up solution, enriched with the depleted component of the multicomponent etching solution, which is added to the etching solution. With the use of this system, a substantially uniform etch bath composition is maintained.

  • Patent number: 4710216
Abstract: A bundle of optical fibers each covered by an acid-soluble borosilicate glass is treated with an acid solution, with an alkali solution, and then with an acid solution to completely remove the acid-soluble glass from the middle portion between the end portions of the optical fiber bundle. A plastic material is charged into the interstices among the fibers at the boundary portions between the middle portion and the end portions. These interstices are free of any insoluble residue of the acid-soluble glass. A reinforcement is formed around the periphery of at least a part of the boundary portions by covering the periphery with a flexible plastic material or by winding a linear member around the periphery.

  • Patent number: 4710272
Abstract: An apparatus for distilling a source liquid which utilizes a substantially vertical liquid column. The liquid column is contained by a tubular container closed at the top and open at the bottom. The open bottom of the tubular container is submerged within a source liquid reservoir. The height of the tubular container is greater than the maximum obtainable height for the given density of the portion of source liquid contained within the column. A vacuum is located within the tubular container above the surface of the portion of source liquid contained in the column. In the area of the vacuum, there is located a centrifugal compressor which is to function to move vapor from the vacuum section of the tubular container and compress such along with the transfer of heat to the point that the vapor becomes liquid. This now product liquid is to be removed from the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4708771
Abstract: A two stage sulfonation system includes a mixing tank, a retention tank, a thickening press, a pressurized vessel, and a liquor recovery press in series relation. The system is designed to receive mechanical pulp, in a slurry form, first introduced into the mixing tank simultaneously with a metered charge of sodium sulfite solution from the holding tank, the sodium sulfite content of which is at a level from about 40 to about 200 g/l. The solution is mixed into the slurry to provide a relatively uniform and intimate contact thereof with its fiber content. This slurry is transferred to the retention tank and there held subject to a sub-boiling temperature between 140 to 210 degrees F., producing a first stage sulfonation of the fiber content. The slurry is then passed to the pressurized vessel, in the course of which it is subjected to a pressing action, extracting liquor which inherently contains a majority of the original sodium sulfite charge directed to the mixing tank.
