  • Patent number: 6293073
Abstract: The present invention relates to sealed pouches, and apparatus and processes for producing the same. The pouch includes contoured first and second lateral edges, with each lateral edge having concave and convex surfaces. The concave surface of the first lateral edge is substantially opposite the convex surface of the second lateral edge and the convex surface of the first lateral edge is substantially opposite the concave surface of the second lateral edge. Accordingly, a distance between the first and second lateral edges is substantially the same for all elevations of the pouch.

  • Patent number: 6282865
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for applying drinking straws on prefabricated packaging containers. The apparatus includes a rotary drive means for advancing drinking straws which are guided in towards the drive means wrapped in protective envelopes, and continuously disposed as drinking straw belts. The apparatus also includes guides for drinking straws belts and drinking straws, and a device for separating drinking straws from the belt, and a device for applying the drinking straw on the side wall of the packaging container. The drive means of the apparatus routes continuously, and the device for separating drinking straws from the belt is disposed to accompany a part distance of the rotation of the drive means, this movement being realised by means of a cam and a cam roller cooperating therewith. The apparatus further includes a continuously driven conveyor on which the packaging containers are advanced so that one passes the drive means.

  • Patent number: 6269614
Abstract: An apparatus for bursting perforations on an article has a retractable burst member and an opposed second retractable burst member that imposes an impact force on the perforations on the perforated lid. Retractable burst members are arranged for vertical movement towards and away from one another in a common plane. The article is positioned in a plane substantially perpendicular to the movement of the burst members so that the burst members can engageably contact the article at the perforations. A separator is used to capture the perforated lid at the burst perforations and then retract for separating the perforated lid from the main portion of the article.

  • Patent number: 6263646
Abstract: An apparatus for bursting perforations on an article, such as a corrugated box, has a rotatable, retractable burst member that exerts an impact force on opposing sides of end portions of the perforated lid. Burst member is arranged for vertical movement towards an end portion of the perforated lid and then rotatable movements to opposing sides of the perforated lid. The article is positioned in a plane substantially perpendicular to the movement of the burst member so that the burst members can engageably contact end portions of the perforated lid with a predetermined impact force. A separator is used to capture the perforated lid and then retract for separating the perforated lid from the main portion of the article.

  • Patent number: 6260336
Abstract: A cutter cleaning apparatus for a filling machine which prevents liquid food adhering to the cutting knife from dirtying cut ends of packaging material. A web-shaped packaging material is continuously sealed in the longitudinal direction thereof to be formed into a tubular shape, a liquid food is charged into the tubular packaging material (11), and the tubular packaging material (11) is nipped from opposite lateral sides at a position below the surface of the liquid food, so that a laterally sealed portion (S) is formed. Subsequently, the laterally sealed portion (S) is cut in order to obtain an original-shape container. The cutter cleaning apparatus includes a cutting knife (21) for cutting the laterally sealed portion (S), and cleaning medium supply means for supplying a cleaning medium to the tip end of the cutting knife (21).

  • Patent number: 6260331
Abstract: This method and apparatus contemplate the making of pocketed springs for mattresses and cushions by inserting compressed springs at intervals along and between the plies of a folder two-ply strip of sheeting, maintaining the springs compressed therein while seaming the edges of the plies to form a sleeve about the compressed springs as the strip is drawn lengthwise toward a release point at which each spring is free to expand to spread the plies. This transposes the edge seaming to mid-height of the spring. A previously made cross seam incorporating the transposed edge seaming limits the forward movement of the spring and a further such cross seam made behind the spring encloses the spring within an individual pocket of the sleeve. The repetition of spring release and cross seaming behind each spring released produces a string or chain of pocketed springs with the closing seam of the sleeve at mid-height of the springs.

  • Patent number: 6254522
Abstract: A separator finger apparatus and method for insertion of a separation finger into and removal from a stream of web product. The unique motion provided by the elements making up the separation finger apparatus permits the separation finger to be mounted close to folding rolls (from which the web product issues) with reduced separation finger-to-folding roll interference. Specifically, the separation finger is manipulated to rotate and translate simultaneously as it is inserted into or removed from the stream of web product. The elements creating the separation finger motion are preferably a pivot arm mounted for rotation about a first axis and a translation member mounted for rotation about a second axis. The pivot arm is preferably rotatably coupled to the separation finger at a third axis. The separation finger is preferably coupled to the translation member for translational or sliding motion therealong.

  • Patent number: 6254523
Abstract: A method of imparting directional permanency of folding to a sheet, and an apparatus therefor, which is suitable for manufacturing frame bodies, cushioning members and other block products for packaging, from a sheet of paper and other recyclable materials. The method includes a step of moving respective folding working tools, disposed on one or both surfaces of a sheet, required amounts so as to fold the sheet along respective folding ruled lines, and a step of shortening spacings between the respective folding working tools in a uniform ratio in accordance with an apparent amount of shortening in a longitudinal dimension caused by the shifting, while synchronizing with the moving step. Directional permanency of folding can be accurately imparted to the sheet along the folding ruled lines.

  • Patent number: 6251055
Abstract: A sheet feeding, folding and accumulating machine has an integral sheet storing and feeding mechanism, and a plurality of feeding inputs from which sheets are fed to a path of travel through the machine from the sheet storing and feeding mechanism or from an external source. A pair of buckle chutes are mounted in the machine, and suitable feeding and folding rollers are mounted adjacent the input ends of the buckle chutes for folding sheets that are fed into the buckle chutes. A movable buckle chute bypass gate is mounted adjacent the input end of each buckle chute, the gates being movable between opposite positions to cause sheets either to enter one or both of the buckle chutes or to bypass the buckle chutes and proceed directly to an accumulating mechanism that is mounted adjacent an outlet end of the machine to control whether each sheet will be folded or not folded before being deposited in the accumulating device.

  • Patent number: 6240705
Abstract: A cushioning conversion system comprising a cushioning conversion machine, a packaging surface, and a dispenser. The cushioning conversion machine includes a conversion assembly which converts a sheet-like stock material into cushioning pads. The dispenser includes a receptacle in which the pads are placed in a vertical stack as they are produced by the cushioning conversion machine. The receptacle is positioned above the packaging surface when the pads are selectively withdrawn therefrom to package items on the packaging surface. The cushioning conversion system allows the accumulation of a plurality of cushioning pads for selective withdrawal without the packaging person having to bend over, without sacrificing valuable packaging surface space, and/or without substantially increasing the system's footprint.

  • Patent number: 6228014
Abstract: A machine (1) for interfolding sheet material (4a, 4b) starting from a web (3a, 3b) of paper and the like. A sequence of offset sheets (4a, 4b) is formed on folding rollers (7a, 7b) which are counter-rotating with respect to each other and have a plurality of circumferential grooves (15a, 15b), in which oscillating folding arms engage (20a, 20b) so as to form a stack (17) of interfolded sheets (4a, 4b). The folding arms (20a, 20b) have pivots (21) very close to the periphery of the folding rollers (7a, 7b), inside or outside of the grooves (15a, 15b). Moreover they can be operated by a crank mechanism that allows to the grooves (15a, 15b) to be shallow enough also in case of rollers (7a, 7b) of enlarged diameter. For the same reason, the folding arms (20a, 20b) can have a bent portion.
