  • Patent number: 4944668
Abstract: A device for gripping and pulling a length of thermoplastic sheet softened to be moldingly formed at the front and rear edges, which are otherwise inevitably made to be concave, so as to hold edges substantially straight. The device uses at least two pairs of lower and upper gripping members arranged to be vertically movable so as to grip the above front and rear edges. Two pairs of pull levers each cooperating with one of the pair of lower and upper gripping members operate so as to grip the front and rear edges in advance of the gripping by the gripping members and pull to straighten the concaved edges which are then gripped by the gripping members.

  • Patent number: 4943341
Abstract: A device with contratrotating knives for severing filter cigarette uniting bands from webs for filter cigarette assemblies in automatic filter tipping mahines, in which the knives are carried by drums in arrays with their cutting edges meeting with tangential contact at successive points. The cutting edges of one series of knives are carried at a higher peripheral speed than that of the other series by a support drum. The path of the cutting edges with a higher peripheral speed develops in a plane of the tangential point between the knives of both series such that their lowermost and uppermost sections respectively, are distant from the axis of rotation by equal radii, but greater than that of at least one of their intermediate points coincident with the tangential point.

  • Patent number: 4938681
Abstract: A center entry valve gated injection molding system having a heated nozzle secured in front of a heated manifold with at least a pair of valve member biasing mechanisms extending radially outward from a reciprocating elongated valve member. The melt passage splits into two branches which extend through a manifold outwardly around a rear portion of the valve member. The two branches of the melt passage and the two biasing mechanisms are alternatively evenly angularly spaced around the valve member which considerably reduces the space required. The valve member has an enlarged forward end which opens forwardly into the cavity and is closed in a retracted position in which it seats in the matching mouth of a gate in a nose portion of the nozzle. Each biasing mechanism includes a compression spring which engages a lever member to continuously urge the valve member rearwardly. When injection pressure is applied it overcome the force of the springs and moves the valve member forwardly to the open position.

  • Patent number: 4938682
Abstract: A mold clamping apparatus of an injection molding machine is provided, which is capable of uniformly applying a pressing force to a movable platen. A pair of annular wedge type connection members (21, 22) are disposed within annular hollow portions (16a) of driving pulleys (16), which are respectively fitted on ball screws (14, 15) threadedly engaged with heads of upper and lower toggle sections disposed symmetrically with respect to an axis of the mold clamping apparatus. To make an adjustment for eliminating mismatch between operational phases of the toggle sections of the toggle mechanism due to flexure of the same mechanism, an urged contact state of the connection member is released by loosening bolts (23), and the ball screws, rendered to be rotatable relative to the driving pulleys, are manually rotated so that the heads are aligned with each other. After completion of the adjustment, the driving pulleys are again rendered rotatable in unison with the ball screws.

  • Patent number: 4923387
Abstract: A valve gated injection molding system having a novel valve member for large volume applications. The elongated valve member has a ribbed insulative portion between the main steel portion and a conductive portion adajcent the tip end. The conductive portion provides more rapid cooling when the tip end is seated in the gate in the closed position. The adjacent insulative portion provides a thermal barrier to reduce heat flow along the valve member to the conductive portion. This combination avoids sticking of the tip end when the mold opens and thus allows cycle time to be reduced. The conductive portion has an integral beryllium copper plug which is supported by radially extending ribs of the insulative portion to withstand continual repeated impact loading every time the gate is closed.

  • Patent number: 4921708
Abstract: An injection molding multi-gate nozzle with a central portion having a central melt bore and a spiral electrical heating element integrally brazed in a channel in its outer surface. The nozzle has a number of elongated conductive probes spaced in a sleeve portion which extends around the central portion adjacent its forward end. Each probe extends in the sleeve portion a predetermined distance rearwardly along the central portion and projects from the sleeve portion a predetermined distance forwardly of the forward end of the central portion. Each conductive probe has a copper inner portion which picks up heat from the adjacent coils of the heating element and carries it forwardly to the projecting forward portion adjacent one of the gates. In addition to providing additional heat, this configuration with the forwardly projecting probes provides the mold with more structural strength and improved cooling.
