  • Patent number: 4919606
Abstract: A valve gated injection molding system having a double acting pneumatic rack and pinion valve pin actuating mechanism. The melt passage branches in a manifold from a central inlet and flows along the valve pin in a central bore in the nozzle to the gate. A pneumatically driven piston pivots a toothed pinion member mounted in a slot in the manifold. The pinion member engages a toothed rack member which reciprocates along a straight line in the slot in the manifold and engages an enlarged head of the valve pin in a slot in the rack member. Lateral forces from the pinion member are absorbed by sliding contact of surfaces of the rack member against matching surfaces of the slot and/or a valve pin bushing, and are not transmitted to the valve pin. This avoids uneven wear and buildup of melt deposits around the valve pin which can otherwise result in leakage and malfunction.

  • Patent number: 4917594
Abstract: A valve gated injection molding system for making hollow plastic products. A fixed pin extends through an elongated hollow valve member which is reciprocated between a retracted open position and a forward closed position in which the forward end of the valve member is seated in the gate. The fixed pin has a hollow portion for the flow of pressurized gas to a porous portion at the forward end which is centrally located in the gate. In the open position, gas from the fixed pin flows into the hollow center of a stream of melt which flows into the cavity around the forward end of the fixed pin to form a melt bubble in the cavity.

  • Patent number: 4917593
Abstract: A valve gated injection molding apparatus in which the actuating force from a pivotal lever member is transmitted to an elongated valve member through a split ring. The two opposing segments of the split ring are mounted around the neck portion of the valve member when it is in the retracted position. The segments are received in a central opening in the manifold which keeps them in longitudinal engagement with the valve member as they reciprocate. The split ring has a notch which engages the inner end of the lever member. The split ring has a collar portion which extends into the nozzle bore in the forward position and determines the length of travel of the valve member between the open and closed positions.

  • Patent number: 4915612
Abstract: An extrusion die assembly for making honeycomb structures of ceramics, glass, and other extrudable materials. The assembly is provided with an apertured, flow controlling forming plate placed against the input (upstream) surface of the extrusion die. The forming plate has a central opening through which the batch material to the input face of the die passes. A series of angularly spaced, flow controlling openings lies radially outwardly of the rim of this central opening. These forming plate openings are axially aligned with a shim reservoir downstream of the discharge slots of the die. This arrangement permits both the flow volume and rate of the batch material being extruded to the skin forming portions of the die assembly to be at least partially independently controlled relative to the flow volume to the main, radially central portion of the extrudate. By this construction, the formation of air checks in the shim reservoir and the formation of rippled skin on the extrudate is inhibited.

  • Patent number: 4913911
Abstract: An embossing machine wherein two driven embossing rolls are provided with ripheral knobs and depressions. The knobs of one roll extend with clearance into the depressions of the other roll and vice versa during travel of the knobs and depressions through the nip of the rolls. The clearances between the top lands of knobs and adjacent portions of internal surfaces bounding the respective depressions are smaller than the clearances between the flanks of the knobs and the adjacent portions of the respective internal surfaces. This ensures that a carpet of loose fibrous material which is fed into the nip is converted into embossed textile material having a first layer of compacted portions which are formed adjacent the top lands of knobs on one of the rolls, a second layer of compacted portions which are formed adjacent the top lands of knobs on the other roll, and fluffy intermediate portions which connect the compacted portions forming one of the layers with compacted portions of the other layer.
