  • Publication number: 20020049066
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and network element for forwarding a multicast message received from an external packet data network (PDN) to subscribers (MS) of a packet radio network, wherein a subscriber-specific information defining multicast messages to be received by the subscribers is stored in a network element (GGSN) of the packet radio network. Based on this subscriber-specific information, a point to point connection is established between the multicast content provider of the multicast message and a subscriber having joined the corresponding multicast group. The subscriber may request a list of available multicast groups from the network element and may inform the network element of the multicast messages he wants to listen to by using a point to point context activation. Thus, the network element which may be a gateway GPRS support node plays an arbitrator role for multicast messages. Thereby, only minor changes of standard network elements are required.

  • Publication number: 20020049059
Abstract: In an access network which supports a mobile IP protocol, a mobile station may perform several handovers between access nodes during a long session which may cause inefficient mobile IP routing. In the present invention, an access node, which is the target of a handover during an IP session, is arranged to check the preferred mobility agent in respect of the optimal routing on the mobile IP level, and if a more preferred mobility agent is available and not the same as a current mobility agent, the connection to the current mobility agent is closed, and a new connection to the preferred mobility agent of the respective access node is opened. In merit of the new connection established by the access node to the preferred mobility agent, the agent advertisement messages sent by the new mobility agent can be received by the mobile node, and thereby the mobile node is able to detect the change of the attachment point (i.e. mobility agent) and to initiate standard mobile IP registration.

  • Publication number: 20020044634
Abstract: The present invention proposes a method for delivering messages in a communication network consisting of at least one terminal and a messaging functionality, said method comprising the steps of receiving a message (MM) for said terminal (MS) by said messaging functionality (MMSC); sending a notification (MMSNotify) about the presence of said message (MM) from said messaging functionality (MMSC) to said terminal (MS); deciding by said terminal (MS) due to its capabilities (CAP) and current user profile (UP) how to handle said received message (MM); replying by said terminal (MS) to the notification sent by said messaging functionality (MMSC), therewith instructing according to the result of said decision step; and handling said message (MM) by said messaging functionality (MMSC) according to said instructions.

  • Publication number: 20020032032
Abstract: A method for selecting a cell for a mobile station (MS) in a cellular telecommunications network, wherein the mobile station (MS) sends a radio station controller (BSC) measurement reports (6-4) comprising information (61, 631 . . . 63N) about the mobile station's serving cell and its neighbor cells. The mobile station or its subscriber is associated with at least one set of special cells called LSA cells. Information on the set of special cells is transferred to the radio station controller (BSC), and the mobile station (MS) at least participates in the transferring of information, preferably by sending an explicit list of its LSA cells or by including in at least one measurement report (6-4) a flag bit (62, 641 . . . 64N) indicating whether or not the cell in question is a special cell.
