  • Patent number: 3974125
Abstract: Known higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays can be surprisingly used as thixotropic agents in reinforced thermoset resins containing a major proportion of an unsaturated polyester and a minor proportion of styrene type monomer by employing a novel pregel process. In this process, the quaternary ammonium clay is pregelled in the styrene and the resulting pregel is then mixed with the unsaturated polyester to produce the final gel which is usually combined with glass fiber as a reinforcing agent for the production of thermoplastics. The novel clay gel compositions of the present invention have surprisingly advantageous properties, compared to the presently used fumed silica gel compositions.

  • Patent number: 3954723
Abstract: Terminally difunctional branched polythioether polyadducts are prepared by reacting dithiols with acetylenes under free radical conditions. Inherent to their method of preparation, the novel polythioethers contain the divalent carbon skeletons derived from their dithiol and acetylene monomer components in a regularly alternating manner. Dependent on the dithiol acetylene monomer ratio, the novel polymers contain thiol and/or vinyl sulfide end groups. Owing to their reactive, diterminal functions, they can be chain extended and crosslinked via known reactions to elastomers useful as mastics. The polymers are crosslinked by various novel methods. For example, one mole of polythioether dithiol is reacted with two moles of an epoxide to produce the corresponding polythioether diol. The latter is then reacted with a diisocyanate to form a polythioether polyurethane of superior thermal and oxidative aging stability.

  • Patent number: 3940374
Abstract: Polythiols having more than two terminal and/or pendant thiol groups per polymer molecule are formed by the free radical catalyzed addition of a monomer system made up of either hydrogen sulfide or a dithiol alone or in combination with an acetylenic compound to a polyolefin having at least three olefin sites. The polyolefin is preferably a tri-terminal olefin. The polythiol products are liquid, essentially gel-free materials having number average molecular weights varying from 200 to 30000. The polyfunctional prepolymers of the invention can be cured to stable three-dimensional networks with inexpensive bi-functional oxidants such as lead dioxide. Additionally, prepolymer compositions having 3 or more pendant or terminal thiol groups per molecule when combined with polyfunctional organic reagents, such as diepoxides, form stable, high-tenacity adhesive systems.
