  • Publication number: 20210262408
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating a cylinder of an engine including a pre-chamber ignition system during a cold start condition. In one example, a method may include performing a post-injection in the cylinder, and then performing a pre-chamber combustion during an exhaust stroke of the cylinder. In this way, a temperature of a catalyst of the engine may be increased, which may decrease vehicle emissions during the cold start condition.

  • Publication number: 20210246823
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for combusting an air-fuel mixture in a pre-chamber of a cylinder during an exhaust stroke of the cylinder responsive to fouling of the pre-chamber. In one example, a method may include injecting air into the pre-chamber during the exhaust stroke, injecting fuel into the pre-chamber during the exhaust stroke, and actuating a pre-chamber spark plug in order to combust the air-fuel mixture during the exhaust stroke. In this way, a temperature of the pre-chamber may be increased, which may decrease a soot load of one of a pre-chamber air-injector, a pre-chamber fuel injector, and the pre-chamber spark plug.

  • Patent number: 11073098
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating a variable displacement engine that includes a misfire detection system. The misfire detection system corrects engine crankshaft acceleration according to cylinder firing patterns so that misfire detection may be improved. • Patent number: 11066978
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating a cylinder of an engine including a pre-chamber system. In one example, a method includes flowing gases from a pre-chamber to a cylinder of an engine prior to fueling the cylinder during a combustion cycle, adjusting a composition of the gases by adjusting at least one of an air injection amount to the pre-chamber and a fuel injection amount to the pre-chamber, and igniting an air-fuel mixture in the cylinder via a pre-chamber ignition event, the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder including the gas from the pre-chamber. In this way, combustion qualities in the cylinder may be adjusted in order to increase a performance and/or an efficiency of the cylinder.

  • Publication number: 20210207551
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating a cylinder of an engine including a pre-chamber ignition system. In one example, a method may include determining amounts of pre-chamber gases in the cylinder prior to combustion, and adjusting an amount of fuel injected into the cylinder based on the amounts of pre-chamber gases in the cylinder. In this way, cylinder fueling may be compensated for additional air and/or fuel from the pre-chamber gases, which may increase an accuracy of the cylinder fueling and increase cylinder efficiency.

  • Publication number: 20210156325
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for a vehicle engine having a pre-chamber ignition system. In one example, a method may include adjusting one or more of an air injection amount and a fuel injection amount to a pre-chamber of an engine based on an air injection offset and a fuel injection offset learned while discontinuing fueling to cylinders of the engine and reducing air flow through the engine. In this way, air and fuel may be more accurately provided to the pre-chamber, thereby decreasing an occurrence of pre-chamber misfire.

  • Patent number: 10961933
Abstract: Methods and systems for operating an engine with split lambda modes are provided. At least one example method comprises, calculating a stoichiometric torque output of the plurality of cylinders; then applying one or more lean torque modifiers for every lean cylinder of the one or more non-stoichiometric cylinders to the stoichiometric torque output to calculate a lean torque output. In at least one example, one or more rich torque modifiers for every rich cylinder of the one or more non-stoichiometric cylinders may be applied to the stoichiometric torque output to calculate a rich torque output. Further, the lean torque output and the rich torque output may be summed to calculate a total engine torque output.

  • Patent number: 10947946
Abstract: Systems and methods for adjusting ignition timing to one or more cylinders of a variable displacement engine responsive to a knock indication are described herein. In one particular example, during a partial cylinder mode, ignition timing to one or more cylinders may be adjusted responsive to a knock indication based on the number of cylinders deactivated; whereas during the full cylinder mode, ignition timing for all cylinders are adjusted responsive to a knock indication. Thereby, the systems and methods described allow a larger partial cylinder operating window that has a benefit of enhancing a vehicle's fuel economy.

  • Publication number: 20210040905
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for protecting an exhaust catalyst from degradation during a DFSO event. Exit from DFSO due to pedal input received from an operator with a jittery foot is averted by filtering the pedal input differently when operating in a DFSO mode as compared to when operating out of the DFSO mode. Exit from DFSO is confirmed after receiving a higher than threshold pedal position input for a sustained period of time, or when an integrated fuel injection amount exceeds a threshold amount.
