  • Patent number: 10588713
Abstract: Computer analysis is made of individual patient related data in order to select standard or pre-manufactured orthodontic appliances or appliance components (10) that are most likely to provide orthodontic treatment suitable for the individual patient. This analysis can be made by the software of a custom orthodontic appliance designing system, without actually manufacturing the custom appliance. Geometric parameters (21-24, 28, 29) of a custom designed appliance may be compared with corresponding parameters of alternative standard appliances or appliance components so that the closest standard component can be used. The custom appliance can be designed to accommodate the geometries of one or more appliance components. Where custom mounting instructions that modify otherwise standard installation of an appliance or component will render the standard component more compatible with a custom appliance design, such instructions are provided to the orthodontist along with the selection.

  • Publication number: 20190172200
Abstract: Systems and methods for integrating intra-oral imagery and volumetric imagery. In one example, a dental imaging system includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the dental imaging system to receive shape data of a super-gingival portion of a patient's teeth; receive volumetric imagery of the super-gingival portion of the patient's teeth and volumetric imagery of a sub-gingival portion of the patient's teeth; segment the shape data to determine crowns of the patient's teeth; and register the crowns with the volumetric imagery of the super-gingival portion.

  • Publication number: 20190133429
Abstract: An imaging device is coupled to a wand having an optical source that generates light at a metrology wavelength, wherein the wand is included in an intra-oral imaging system. The imaging device comprises a spectral filter that transmits the light of the metrology wavelength and blocks light of other wavelengths. The imaging device also comprises a lens coupled to the spectral filter. Additionally, the imaging device further comprises a sensor, wherein the light of the metrology wavelength is incident on the sensor after being transmitted through the lens and the spectral filter, and wherein the sensor converts the light of the metrology wavelength that is incident on the sensor, into electrical signals to generate intra-oral imagery.

  • Patent number: 10204414
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for identifying a sub-gingival surface of a tooth in volumetric imagery data. Shape data is received from a surface scanner and volumetric imagery data is received from a volumetric imaging device. The shape data of the super-gingival portion of a first tooth is registered with the volumetric imagery data of the super-gingival portion of the first tooth to obtain a registration result. At least one criterion is then determined for detecting a surface of the first tooth in the volumetric imagery data of the super-gingival or the sub-gingival portion using the registration result. The surface of the sub-gingival portion of the first tooth is detected in the volumetric imagery data using the at least one criterion.

  • Patent number: 10143536
Abstract: A set of rules to design an orthodontic appliance for generating an aesthetic smile is maintained in a computational device, where the set of rules is associated with an application that executes in the computational device. At least one measured value is computed from one or more features extracted by processing dental information of a patient. The application generates a parameter to design an orthodontic appliance based on the at least one measured value and the set of rules for generating the aesthetic smile.

  • Patent number: 10052177
Abstract: A placement jig for locating an orthodontic appliance on a tooth is provided with a cavity formed in a jig body and conforming to the contour of an occlusal portion a tooth crown, which cavity is coated with a releasable adhesive to hold the jig to the tooth as the appliance is bonded to the tooth. Connecting structure is fixed to the jig body. In certain embodiments, at least two jig-locating areas shaped to respectively conform to areas on the occlusal surfaces of two different teeth of a group are machined into the machinable material, and appliance receiving structures are also machined on each jig body, each for holding an orthodontic appliance in a fixed position and orientation relative to the jig body. The jig bodies for placing orthodontic appliances on the teeth of an individual patient are preferably formed of a single piece of machinable material. A method and an apparatus for forming the jig bodies are provided.

  • Patent number: 9622834
Abstract: A method by which an orthodontic appliance is automatically designed and manufactured from digital lower jaw and tooth shape data of a patient provides for the scanning of the mouth of a patient to produce a three-dimensional digitized model of the shapes of the patient's teeth and their positions in the patient's mouth. The appliance is automatically designed according to the final design, which also can be interactively modified and approved by the orthodontist, with the computer recalculating the effects on the treatment as a result of the doctor's changes. Brackets are fabricated as an integrated set, either by cutting slots therein or by building the brackets in layers. Three-dimensional custom jigs are automatically made to exactly position the brackets on a patient's teeth.
