Patent number: 6801293Abstract: The curing, by UV-light irradiation, of a sealing resin after injecting liquid crystal is made reliable. The display characteristics and the like of an in-plane electric field mode liquid crystal element are improved. To resolve these problems, the viscosity of the sealing resin is lowered, while bubbles mixed in the sealing resin are eliminated by ultrasonic waves, for example. Also, a means for eliminating ions and charges in the liquid crystal layer is devised.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2002Date of Patent: October 5, 2004Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kazuhiro Nishiyama, Junko Asayama, Kazunori Komori, Yukio Tanaka, Akio Takimoto, Kazuo Inoue, Katsuhiko Kumagawa, Ichiro Sato, Hirofumi Wakemoto, Noriyuki Kizu, Masanori Kimura, Keisuke Tsuda

Patent number: 6791566Abstract: In a display device according to a first aspect of the invention, luminance is not made substantially uniform over the entire display screen but rather imparted a luminance gradient such that luminance substantially monotonously decreases from the center of the screen towards the peripheral portion using a luminance gradient forming means, whereby power consumption is reduced compared to cases in which the entire screen shows substantially uniform luminance. In a second aspect of the invention, by optimizing gray level characteristics and thereby improving a viewer's impression of brightness, luminance gradient is made even less perceivable without increasing power consumption. These configurations provide large screen, low power consumption display devices.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2002Date of Patent: September 14, 2004Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yasunori Kuratomi, Junko Asayama, Akifumi Ogiwara, Tsuyoshi Uemura, Kazunori Komori

Publication number: 20020196220Abstract: Disclosed is a liquid crystal display capable of ensuring brightness necessary for achieving satisfactory display by increasing ratio of light-emitting time to one frame period. A liquid crystal display is adapted to have a period (non-video signal write period) required for writing non-video signals different from video signals onto all the pixels before a video signal write period. In the non-video signal write period, the non-video signals are written onto the respective pixels, thereby starting response of the liquid crystal before the start of the video signal write period. In the non-video signal write period, a backlight is turned off, and thereby image degradation is prevented even when the non-video signals are written onto the respective pixels.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 28, 2002Publication date: December 26, 2002Inventors: Ichiro Sato, Katsuhiko Kumagawa, Hiroyuki Yamakita, Kazunori Komori
