  • Publication number: 20060006791
Abstract: A display having a cover element that is fastened to a base element is disclosed. The base element includes a substrate having a die with a semiconductor light source. The die is covered by a transparent protective layer. The cover element includes an opaque layer having an opening positioned to allow the die and the protective layer to protrude through the opening in the bottom surface but remain below the level of the top surface. A transparent window covers the opening above the die and the protective layer. The transparent window defines a pattern that is illuminated by the light source and visible from above the top surface of the cover element. A fastener affixes the base element to the cover element. The opaque layer and transparent window can be made in a two-step molding process. The display avoids the problems associated with encapsulating LEDs in an epoxy.

  • Publication number: 20050248271
Abstract: A light emitting device having a die that includes a light source that generates light of a first wavelength and a layer of phosphor particles covering the die is disclosed. The phosphor particles convert a portion of the light of the first wavelength to light of a second wavelength. The light source can be fabricated by attaching the light source to a substrate, and converting the light source by applying a light converting layer that includes a volatile carrier material and particles of a phosphor that convert light of the first wavelength to light of the second wavelength over the light source. The volatile carrier material is then caused to evaporate leaving a layer of the phosphor particles over the light source. A binder material can be incorporated in the volatile carrier for binding the phosphor particles to one another after the volatile carrier material is evaporated.

  • Publication number: 20050206301
Abstract: A device and method for emitting composite output light uses multiple wavelength-conversion mechanisms to convert the original light generated by a light source of the device into longer wavelength light to produce the composite output light. One of the wavelength-conversion mechanisms of the device is a fluorescent substrate of the light source that converts the original light into first converted light. Another wavelength-conversion mechanism of the device is a wavelength-conversion region optically coupled to the light source that converts the original light into second converted light. • Publication number: 20050135441
Abstract: A light source and method for controlling the same. The light source includes a first component light source that includes N LEDs, a photo-detector, and a collector, where N>1. Each LED has a light emitting chip in a package. The light emitting chip emits light in a forward direction and light in a side direction. The light generated in the forward direction is determined by a drive signal coupled to that LED. A portion of the light in the side direction leaves the package. The collector is positioned such that a portion of the light in the side direction that leaves the package of each of the LEDs is directed onto the photo-detector. The photo-detector generates N intensity signals, each intensity signal having an amplitude related to the intensity of the light emitted in the side direction by a corresponding one of the LEDs.

  • Publication number: 20050134197
Abstract: A light source and method for programming the light source to provide a color that approximates that of a target light source are disclosed. The light source generates light at first and second wavelengths with intensities that are determined by first and second control signals that are set by a feedback controller that matches the outputs of a monitoring circuit to target signals. The target signals are generated from target values that are entered into the feedback controller by exposing the light source to the target light source and observing the outputs from a set of photodetectors incorporated in the light source. In one embodiment, the photodetectors in the monitoring circuit are used for this programming function.
