  • Patent number: 6629214
Abstract: A multiprocessor data processing system requires careful management to maintain cache coherency. Conventional systems using a MESI approach sacrifice some performance with inefficient lock-acquisition and lock-retention techniques. The disclosed system provides additional cache states, indicator bits, and lock-acquisition routines to improve cache performance. The additional cache states allow cache state transition sequences to be optimized. In particular, the claimed system and method provides that a given processor, after acquiring a lock or reservation to a given cache line, will keep the lock, to make successive modifications to the cache line, instead of releasing it to other processors after making only one modification. By doing so, the overhead typically required to acquire a lock before making any cache line modification is eliminated for successive modifications.

  • Patent number: 6629212
Abstract: A multiprocessor data processing system requires careful management to maintain cache coherency. In conventional systems using a MESI approach, two or more processors will often compete for ownership of a common cache line. As a result, ownership of the cache line will frequently “bounce” between multiple processors, which causes a significant reduction in cache efficiency. The preferred embodiment provides a modified MESI state which holds the status of the cache line static for a fixed period of time, which eliminates the bounce effect from contention between multiple processors.

  • Patent number: 6629209
Abstract: A multiprocessor data processing system requires careful management to maintain cache coherency. Conventional systems using a MESI approach sacrifice some performance with inefficient lock-acquisition and lock-retention techniques. The disclosed system provides additional cache states, indicator bits, and lock-acquisition routines to improve cache performance. The additional cache states allow cache state transition sequences to be optimized by replacing frequently-occurring and inefficient MESI code sequences with improved sequences using modified cache states.

  • Patent number: 6625701
Abstract: A multiprocessor data processing system requires careful management to maintain cache coherency. Conventional systems using a MESI approach sacrifice some performance with inefficient lock-acquisition and lock-retention techniques. The disclosed system provides additional cache states, indicator bits, and lock-acquisition routines to improve cache performance. In particular, as multiple processors compete for the same cache line, a significant amount of processor time is lost determining if another processor's cache line lock has been released and attempting to reserve that cache line while it is still owned by the other processor. The preferred embodiment provides an indicator bit with the cache store command which specifically indicates whether the store also acts as a lock-release.

  • Patent number: 6553463
Abstract: A method and system for high speed data access of a banked cache memory. In accordance with the method and system of the present invention, during a first cycle, in response to receipt of a request address at an access controller, the request address is speculatively transmitted to a banked cache memory, where the speculative transmission has at least one cycle of latency. Concurrently, the request address is snooped in a directory associated with the banked cache memory. Thereafter, during a second cycle the speculatively transmitted request address is distributed to each of multiple banks of memory within the banked cache memory. In addition, the banked cache memory is provided with a bank indication indicating which bank of memory among the multiple banks of memory contains the request address, in response to a bank hit from snooping the directory.

  • Patent number: 6535939
Abstract: A data processing system with configurable processor chip buses. The processor chip is designed with a bus allocation unit and has a plurality of extended buses of which a number are configurable buses (i.e. may be dynamically allocated to any one of several external components, particularly memory and other SMPs). A priority determination of bandwidth requirements of the external components is made during system processing. Then the configurable buses are dynamically allocated to the external components based on their bandwidth requirement and/or the configuration which provides the best overall system efficiency.

  • Patent number: 6532521
Abstract: A method of operating a processing unit of a computer system, by issuing an instruction having an explicit prefetch request directly from an instruction sequence unit to a prefetch unit of the processing unit. The invention applies to values that are either operand data or instructions. In a preferred embodiment, two prefetch units are used, the first prefetch unit being hardware independent and dynamically monitoring one or more active streams associated with operations carried out by a core of the processing unit, and the second prefetch unit being aware of the lower level storage subsystem and sending with the prefetch request an indication that a prefetch value is to be loaded into a lower level cache of the processing unit. The invention may advantageously associate each prefetch request with a stream ID of an associated processor stream, or a processor ID of the requesting processing unit (the latter feature is particularly useful for caches which are shared by a processing unit cluster).

  • Patent number: 6505277
Abstract: A method for ordering the time of issue of a load instruction from a lower level (L2) intervening cache, interlinked by a system bus to a first L2 cache. The method comprises the steps of (i) appending a cycle of dependency (CoD) value to said load instruction, where the CoD value corresponds to a specified time, measured in cycles, on a synchronized timer (ST) at which the data is required by a downstream dependency, (ii) monitoring when a search of the first cache by said load instruction results in a miss, (iii) searching the load instruction at the second cache when the miss is detected, and (iv) providing the data requested by the load instruction from the intervening cache to a pipeline of a system resource of said first L2 cache at the specified time.

  • Patent number: 6473833
Abstract: A method of operating a multi-level memory hierarchy of a computer system and an apparatus embodying the method, wherein multiple levels of storage subsystems are used to improve the performance of the computer system, each next higher level generally having a faster access time, but a smaller amount of storage. Values within a level are indexed by a directory that provides an indexing of information relating the values in that level to the next lower level. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the directories for the various levels of storage are contained within the next higher level, providing a faster access to the directory information. Cache memories used as the highest levels of storage, and one or more sets are allocated out of that cache memory for containing a directory of the next lower level of storage.

  • Patent number: 6467030
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forwarding data in a hierarchial cache memory architecture is disclosed. A cache memory hierarchy includes multiple levels of cache memories, each level having a different size and speed. A command is initially issued from a processor to the cache memory hierarchy. If the command is a Demand Load command, data corresponding to the Demand Load command is immediately forwarded from a cache having the data to the processor. Otherwise, if the command is a Prefetch Load command, data corresponding to the Prefetch Load command is held in a cache reload buffer within a cache memory preceding the processor.

  • Patent number: 6442653
Abstract: A data processing system includes a processing unit, a distributed memory including a local memory and a remote memory having differing access latencies, and a cache coupled to the processing unit and to the distributed memory. The cache includes data storage and a plurality of latency indicators that each indicate an access latency to the distributed memory for associated data stored in the data storage. As a result, transactions related to cached data can be efficiently routed and addressed and efficient victim selection and deallocation policies can be implemented in the cache.

  • Patent number: 6434669
Abstract: A set associative cache includes a cache controller, a directory, and an array including at least one congruence class containing a plurality of sets. The plurality of sets are partitioned into multiple groups according to which of a plurality of information types each set can store. The sets are partitioned so that at least two of the groups include the same set and at least one of the sets can store fewer than all of the information types. To optimize cache operation, the cache controller dynamically modifies a cache policy of a first group while retaining a cache policy of a second group, thus permitting the operation of the cache to be individually optimized for different information types. The dynamic modification of cache policy can be performed in response to either a hardware-generated or software-generated input.

  • Patent number: 6434668
Abstract: A set associative cache includes a number of congruence classes that each contain a plurality of sets, a directory, and a cache controller. The directory indicates, for each congruence class, which of a plurality of information types each of the plurality of sets can store. At least one set in at least one of the congruence classes is restricted to storing fewer than all of the information types and at least one set can store multiple information types. When the cache receives information to be stored of a particular information type, the cache controller stores the information into one of the plurality of sets indicated by the directory as capable of storing that particular information type. By managing the sets in which sets information is stored according to information type, an awareness of the characteristics of the various information types can easily be incorporated into the cache's allocation and victim selection policies.
