  • Patent number: 7524073
Abstract: A grating for an optical device. The grating includes a working area comprising a periodic grating structure and a non-working area comprising a support structure for mating with an additional component of the optical device. The support structure supports the additional component in order to prevent strains from developing in the grating. The strains may come from physical stresses applied to the optical device during manufacturing or use or may come from changes in the temperature of the optical device. The support structure may operate by providing an element whose width to height ratio is greater than a width to height ratio of the elements in the grating structure. The support structure may also operate by being higher than the working area of the grating. Furthermore, the non-working area of the grating may include alignment marks used during the manufacturing of the optical device.

  • Patent number: 7352466
Abstract: In detecting presence of a gas, light passes through a photonic crystal cavity configured to sample a gas and receive light. The light has a wavelength that at least partially falls within a specific absorption wavelength of the gas. At least one parameter of a band gap spectrum is generated from at least a portion of the light passing through the photonic crystal cavity. In generating the at least one parameter, a numerical simulation is performed within a frequency range of the photonic crystal cavity to generate a set of spectral response data points, rational function interpolation is performed on the set of spectral response data points to generate a spectral response, and at least one parameter is determined from the spectral response. The at least one parameter is compared with stored parameters of band gap spectrums, wherein a match indicates a presence and/or concentration of the gas.

  • Publication number: 20050060884
Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for fabricating a nanowire thermoelectric device comprising the step of providing a substrate upon which to form nanowires. The substrate comprises substrate electrodes passing from a top exposed surface of the substrate to a bottom exposed surface of the substrate. Another step involves forming a first electrode pattern, which forms first and second electrically connected groups of substrate electrodes, on the bottom surface of the substrate. A p-type nanowire is then formed on the substrate by activating the first group of substrate electrodes during p-type material deposition. Similarly, a n-type nanowire is formed by activating the second group of substrate electrodes during n-type material deposition. And top electrodes are formed to connect the p-type and the n-type nanowires and a second electrode pattern is formed on the bottom side of the substrate to replace the first electrode pattern to form a thermocouple.
