  • Patent number: 9629035
Abstract: An access terminal establishes a session with a first radio access network (RAN). As a result, the access terminal receives a Unicast Access Terminal Identifier (UATI) assigned by the first RAN and establishes configuration settings for radio communications between the access terminal and the first RAN. The access terminal moves from the first RAN to a second RAN. Before the access terminal has a session established with the second RAN, the access terminal receives a request from a user to originate a call. In response, the access terminal sends the second RAN a connection request that includes the UATI assigned by the first RAN. The second RAN evaluates the UATI included in the connection request and determines that it was previously assigned to the access terminal by another RAN. Based on this determination, the second RAN grants the connection request by assigning a traffic channel to the access terminal.

  • Patent number: 9591610
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for improved paging in a wireless communication system. In a scenario where base stations broadcast congestion indicators to prevent mobile stations from registering in coverage areas that are experiencing threshold congestion, the method provides for a new form of zone based paging that accounts for the possibility that a mobile station has entered into a new zone but has not yet registered due to a threshold congestion state. According to the method, a paging attempt will be directed to the mobile station's zone of last registration and to only those coverage areas in at least one adjacent paging zone that are deemed to be experiencing threshold congestion.

  • Patent number: 9264965
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handing off packet-transmission between sectors of a wireless communication system is disclosed herein. During transmission of a packet from an access network to an access terminal, the access terminal determines that the packet should theoretically be transmitted to the access terminal in fewer timeslots in another sector than the number of allowed timeslots remaining for the packet transmission in a current sector. In response, the access terminal abandons packet transmission in the current sector and hands off to the other sector, in an effort to increase throughput and save air interface resources.

  • Patent number: 9253334
Abstract: A controller monitors resource usage in each of a plurality of sectors and identifies any sector with resource usage that exceeds a threshold value as a high usage sector. The controller evaluates the mobile stations in its area and identifies any mobile station that is using a high usage sector and at least two other sectors for a communication session as a candidate mobile station. The controller applies a predictive algorithm to determine whether any candidate mobile station is able to continue its respective communication session without using its respective high usage sector. In this determination, the signal levels that a mobile station reported for the sectors in its active set, other than the high usage sector, may be used to calculate a combined signal level. If the combined signal level exceeds a predefined value, the mobile station is instructed to drop the high usage sector.

  • Patent number: 9197333
Abstract: During connection establishment, an access network and/or an access terminal may decide whether to transmit bearer-traffic data rather than null-traffic data based on a channel quality of a wireless link. For example, if the access network has forward bearer-traffic data ready for transmission to the access terminal during connection establishment, the access network may decide to transmit that forward bearer-traffic data rather than forward null-traffic data in response to determining that a forward-channel quality of the wireless link is sufficient to carry such data. As another example, if the access terminal has reverse bearer-traffic data ready for transmission to the access network during connection establishment, the access terminal may decide to transmit that reverse bearer-traffic data rather than reverse null-traffic data in response to determining that a reverse-channel quality of the wireless link is sufficient to carry such data.

  • Patent number: 9148836
Abstract: A method and system for vertical handoff of a mobile station from a first-protocol RAN to a second-protocol RAN. The method and system provide a make-before-break vertical handoff, by having the first-protocol RAN (i) acquire, on behalf of the mobile station, a traffic channel assignment defining one or more traffic channel parameters for air interface communication in the second-protocol RAN, and (ii) pass to the mobile station, via the first air interface protocol, the one or more traffic channel parameters so that the mobile station can then readily switch over to communication under the second-protocol RAN. Optimally, the acquisition and passing of the one or more second-protocol traffic channel parameters may occur without the mobile station having requested the handoff, without the mobile station having asked for the traffic channel assignment, and without the mobile station having yet begun communication with the second-protocol RAN.

  • Patent number: 9144080
Abstract: A supporting node maintains a retransmission database that stores information about the historical retransmission rates of user terminals served by the network. The supporting network node provides the information about the retransmission rates of the user terminals to the base stations that are serving the user terminals. When a user terminal is being scheduled to receive a downlink transmission, the scheduler at the base station may use historical retransmission rates of the user terminal to select transmission parameters, e.g. modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and/or transport block size (TBS), for the downlink transmission.

  • Patent number: 9137759
Abstract: A power control command (PCC) transmission scheme is disclosed. In one embodiment, the PCC transmission scheme may involve an access network engaging in a respective communication session with each of a plurality of access terminals on a given wireless link and sending a respective series of PCCs directed to each of the plurality of access terminals on the given wireless link. Based on a power utilization of the given wireless link, the access network may then decide to adjust a transmission rate at which to send PCCs directed to a set of access terminals in the plurality of access terminals. In turn, the access network may send the respective series of PCCs directed to each of the set of access terminals at the adjusted transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 9119092
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting channel elements in a wireless communication system based on their performance history. Data is collected indicating the performance of various channel elements over time, preferably eliminating from consideration any performance degradation due to air interface (e.g., radio frequency) issues. The data is then used to sort the channel elements in a priority order, from best-performing to worst-performing. When a channel element is to be selected for use in connection with an air interface channel (e.g., traffic channel or control channel), the channel element is then selected in accordance with the priority order, such as by selecting the channel element that has performed best over time. The priority-based selection of channel elements can thus leave poor-performing channel elements for use as a last resort, which can be advantageous in times of heavy network loading for instance.

  • Patent number: 9088937
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided causing a mobile station to, after experiencing a dropped call, originate a subsequent call via a coverage area different than that used for the first call. In an embodiment, a mobile station detects that, when it was engaged in the first call at a first location via a first wireless coverage area, the mobile station experienced the first call being dropped. When the mobile station subsequently attempts to originate a second call, the mobile station determines that its current location is within a threshold distance of the first location, and responsively attempts to originate the second call via a second wireless coverage area different from the first.

  • Patent number: 9084162
Abstract: A method and mechanism to use a serving evolved Node B, eNB, to force a User Equipment, UE, (being served by that eNB) into Discontinuous Reception, DRX, mode despite pending data transactions at the UE. This results in timely reading of Extended Cell Global Identity, ECGI, of neighboring cell(s), thereby facilitating entry of a target cell into the serving cell's neighbor list via Automatic Neighbor Relation, ANR, and subsequent handover (if needed) to that target cell. The serving eNB may instruct its scheduler to not allocate any Resource Blocks, RBs, to the UE (especially when the UE has high volume of pending data transactions and/or when the UE is in motion and its retransmission rate is beyond a specific threshold) such that the UE automatically goes into the DRX mode. The duration of the DRX cycle also may be optionally extended until ECGI measurements from the UE are received.

  • Patent number: 9049725
Abstract: A spread spectrum communication system includes a base station that is able to transmit wireless signals that are spread by any of a plurality of orthogonal spreading codes and receive wireless signals that mobile stations transmit in an access channel. One of the orthogonal spreading codes is reserved as an indicator code that the base station uses to indicate when the access channel is occupied by a transmission from a mobile station. When the base station detects a transmission in the access channel, the base station estimates a completion time when the transmission will be completed and transmits an indicator signal spread with the indicator code until the completion time is reached. Before a mobile station transmits a message in the access channel, the mobile station determines whether the access channel is occupied by determining whether the base station is transmitting the indicator signal.

  • Patent number: 9007907
Abstract: An access terminal in a coverage area of an access network may be monitoring a level of loading on the coverage area's reverse link, such as by monitoring a series of reverse activity bits sent by the access network. The access terminal may then detect new data for transmission to the access network and responsively select a reverse-link data rate based on the monitored level of loading. In this respect, the access terminal may select (a) a first data rate (e.g., a reverse-link data rate at which the access terminal last transmitted data) if the access terminal detects a low load, and (b) a second data rate (e.g., a minimum available reverse-link data rate) if the access terminal detects a high load, where the second data rate is lower than the first data rate. The access terminal may also consider its location in selecting the reverse-link data rate.

  • Patent number: 8934499
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for dynamically transferring between multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) transmit modes based on a usage level of a wireless access node. In a particular embodiment, a method provides transferring wireless communications to a wireless communication device via a plurality of ports in a wireless access node on a wireless communication network. The method further provides determining an access node usage level for the wireless access node. If the access node usage level satisfies a condition for access node usage, the method provides configuring the plurality of ports to use a MIMO 2 transmit-2 carrier mode for transmitting the wireless communications. If the access node usage level does not satisfy the condition for access node usage, the method provides configuring the plurality of ports to use a MIMO 4 transmit-1 carrier mode for transmitting the wireless communications.
