  • Patent number: 8880115
Abstract: While a first and second entity are engaging in a communication session on a wireless link, the first entity may be sending a series of power control commands (PCCs) directed to the second entity at a first transmission rate. Additionally, the first entity may monitor an actual and expected transmission-power adjustment of the second entity. Based on this monitored actual and expected transmission-power adjustment, the first entity may decide to alter the PCC transmission scheme for the second entity. For instance, if the monitored actual and expected transmission-power adjustment differs by a threshold extent, the power-controlling entity may decide to increase the PCC transmission rate for the power-controlled entity and/or increase the transmission-power adjustment instructed by PCCs directed to the second entity. In response, the first entity may begin sending the series of PCCs directed to the second entity according to the altered PCC transmission scheme.

  • Patent number: 8855686
Abstract: A method and system of paging a mobile station. In response to receiving a request to set up a communication with a mobile station, a radio network controller (RNC) may identify a last-known location of the mobile station. The RNC may then identify two or more paging areas based on the mobile station's last-known location. In turn, the RNC may determine an indication of traffic for each of the identified paging areas. For example, the RNC may determine an indication of traffic for a paging area by (a) determining a number of communication requests received by BTSs located in the paging area within a given time period, (b) determining a number of BTSs located in the paging area, and (c) dividing the number of communication requests by the number of BTSs. Thereafter, the RNC may page the mobile station in the identified paging area having the highest indication of traffic.

  • Patent number: 8855661
Abstract: Methods and computer-readable media are provided to determine which sector the mobile device will bias during soft handoff. Signals are received from multiple sectors, and for a first quantity of time slots of a frame, the signals are inspected to determine whether a quality threshold is met. Based on whether the quality threshold is met, each sector is assigned a power control command indicating that either a decrease or increase of output power is recommended when a subsequent signal is sent to the mobile device. For a second quantity of time slots, the overall power control command sent to the sectors corresponds to the power control command assigned to the sector that has communicated the highest quality signals for the first quantity of time slots of the frame.

  • Patent number: 8838154
Abstract: An access network may receive an incoming communication for an idle access terminal having a last-known location in a first service area of the access network. In response to receiving the incoming communication, the access network may determine whether the last-known location is proximate to a border between the first service area and a second service area of the access network. If so, the access network may define a border paging area encompassing one or more coverage areas within the second service area that are proximate to the last-known location. In turn, the access network may determine a representative paging-channel occupancy of the border paging area. Based on the representative paging-channel occupancy, the access network may then select a time at which to initiate a border page of the access terminal in the border paging area and then perhaps initiate the border page at the selected time.

  • Patent number: 8798005
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for comparative-throughput triggered handoff. According to one embodiment of the method, the RAN may determine that a higher priority AT is receiving a lower level of throughput than a lower priority AT in the same sector, and as a response, the RAN will cause the higher priority AT to hand off from the current serving sector. According to another embodiment of the method, the RAN may identify which of the ATs being served in a particular sector are receiving lower than a threshold level of throughput, and subsequently determine the highest service priority level of these identified ATs. The RAN will then cause one or more of the identified ATs that have the highest service priority level to hand off from the current serving sector.

  • Patent number: 8767567
Abstract: A wireless communication system uses a series of repeating overhead time cycles that each comprise a plurality of time slots. The system exchanges overhead information with wireless communication devices during individual time slots. The communication system wirelessly receives a registration request for wireless communication service from a wireless communication device. The communication system processes loading information for the overhead time cycles or a quality of service level of the wireless communication device to assign the wireless communication device to one of the overhead time cycles. The communication system wirelessly indicates the assigned overhead time cycle to the wireless communication device. The communication device monitors the overhead time slots during the assigned one of the overhead time cycles and does not monitor the overhead time slots during the not assigned overhead time cycles.

  • Patent number: 8738044
Abstract: A two-stage method is used to page a target mobile station. A wireless network transmits an initial page message into a plurality of wireless coverage areas (e.g., the wireless coverage areas defined by a paging zone) that includes the target mobile station's last reported location. The initial page message is received by a plurality of mobile stations, which then transmit a plurality of responses. The plurality of responses includes a target response from the target mobile station. The wireless network determines the target wireless coverage area that received the target response and then transmits a supplemental page message into the target wireless coverage area. The initial page message may be a very short message, such as a page indicator, that does not identify the target mobile station. The supplemental page message may be a longer message that identifies the target mobile station and the reason for the page.

  • Patent number: 8737999
Abstract: A method and system of controlling switching of an access terminal between cells of an access network that includes a first BTS serving a first cell and a second BTS serving a second cell. While the first BTS is receiving from the access terminal one or more consecutive requests for current service in the first cell and serving the access terminal, the second BTS receives from the access terminal a request for future service in the second cell. In response, the second BTS prepares to serve the access terminal in the second cell. After the second BTS has finished preparing, the first BTS sends to the access terminal an instruction to stop sending requests for current service in the first cell (e.g., a DRCLock bit message). The second BTS then receives from the access terminal a request for current service in the second cell, and begins serving the access terminal.

  • Publication number: 20140133461
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handing off packet-transmission between sectors of a wireless communication system is disclosed herein. During transmission of a packet from an access network to an access terminal, the access terminal determines that the packet should theoretically be transmitted to the access terminal in fewer timeslots in another sector than the number of allowed timeslots remaining for the packet transmission in a current sector. In response, the access terminal abandons packet transmission in the current sector and hands off to the other sector, in an effort to increase throughput and save air interface resources.

  • Publication number: 20140126359
Abstract: A supporting node maintains a retransmission database that stores information about the historical retransmission rates of user terminals served by the network. The supporting network node provides the information about the retransmission rates of the user terminals to the base stations that are serving the user terminals. When a user terminal is being scheduled to receive a downlink transmission, the scheduler at the base station may use historical retransmission rates of the user terminal to select transmission parameters, e.g. modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and/or transport block (TBS), for the downlink transmission.
