Patent number: 8325648Abstract: Methods and systems for assigning a wireless communication device to a carrier frequency are presented. In an exemplary embodiment, a radio access network (RAN) radiates to define one or more wireless coverage areas using at least two different carrier frequencies. A given wireless communication device (WCD) seeks to engage in a call, and accordingly transmits a probe message to the RAN. In response to receiving the probe message, and based at least on information associated with the probe message, the RAN determines an initial carrier frequency assignment for the given WCD. Preferably, this initial carrier frequency assignment is performed to balance load across at least some of the at least two different carrier frequencies. The RAN then transmits an indication of the carrier frequency assignment to the given WCD. The given WCD may then tune to the assigned carrier frequency and conduct communications using the assigned carrier frequency.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2009Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Maulik K. Patent number: 8311551Abstract: Wireless access terminals operating in a radio access network (RAN) may move from one coverage area to another coverage area formed by base stations within the RAN. The RAN tracks the location of the access terminals so that RAN can efficiently route communications, such as page messages, to a base station serving the access terminals. From time-to-time, the access terminals can send route-update messages to inform the RAN of their locations. Sending the route-update messages can increase the loading on base station channels that carry the messages. Methods, systems, and devices for delaying transmission of the route-update messages are described. Delaying or not delaying transmission of the route-update messages may be dependent on occupancy of access channels of a base station and whether the access terminals are mobile at the time the route-update messages are to be sent.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2010Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Manoj Shetty, Bhagwan Khanka, Sachin R. Patent number: 8305991Abstract: A method and apparatus for handing off packet-transmission between sectors of a wireless communication system is disclosed herein. During transmission of a packet from an access network to an access terminal, the access terminal determines that the packet should theoretically be transmitted to the access terminal in fewer timeslots in another sector than the number of allowed timeslots remaining for the packet transmission in a current sector. In response, the access terminal abandons packet transmission in the current sector and hands off to the other sector, in an effort to increase throughput and save air interface resources.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2007Date of Patent: November 6, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Sachin R. Patent number: 8300620Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for adjusting a timer mechanism based on radio frequency (RF) conditions of a network connecting source and destination devices are provided. Initially, data packets transmitted by the source device are assigned an ordering. This ordering is compared to an actual order in which the data packets are received at the destination device to ascertain whether any data packets were missing due to RF conditions. A negative response indicating missing, or lost, data packets may be returned, thereby invoking the source device to retransmit the data packets identified as missing. The device(s) may compute a probability of packet-loss (utilizing a recorded history of the transmitted packets in conjunction with the data packets actually received) and utilize the packet-loss probability to dynamically tune a time-interval of the timer mechanism. Upon expiration of the time-interval, the timer mechanism instructs the source device to retransmit the initial data packets.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2008Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Assignee: Sprint Communications Company L.P.Inventors: Debasish Sarkar, Siddharth S. Patent number: 8270988Abstract: A method is disclosed for implementing an overlay carrier frequency in a wireless coverage area in response to low load in the coverage area. Normally, an carrier frequency may be added in response to high load. However, the disclosed method involves adding a carrier frequency in response to low load, as the addition of a carrier may advantageously increase the likelihood of soft handoff in certain situations, and as low load may facilitate operation on the added carrier without the need to add expensive supporting infrastructure that would typically be added to support full operation on an added carrier frequency.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2008Date of Patent: September 18, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Debasish Sarkar, Sachin R. Patent number: 8265660Abstract: Methods are described for handling an incoming call at a mobile switching center when the mobile station is currently in either an access state (in the process of making an outgoing call) or in a paging state (in the process of receiving an earlier incoming call). The mobile switching center waits until the mobile station transitions out of the access state or paging state into a traffic state. The mobile switching center sends an alert message to the mobile station alerting the user of the new incoming call. The mobile switching center handles the incoming call per a response to the alert message. One option would be to send the new incoming call to the user and drop the other incoming call (or the outgoing call). Another option would be to direct the incoming call to voice mail. In either case, the handling of the incoming call is per the user's direction, i.e., as dictated by the response message.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2007Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Sachin Vargantwar, Kamal Doshi, Anoop Goyal, Manoj Shetty, Siddharth Oroskar

Patent number: 8265645Abstract: In a communication system, a wireless access node receives an access request from a wireless communication device. In response, the access node starts an access timer and transfers signaling to the communication system indicating the access request. If the access timer expires before a response to the signaling is received, then the access node provides the wireless communication device with wireless access to the communication system. The access node receives the response to the signaling. If the response is negative and is received before the access timer expires, then the access node denies the access request. If the response is negative and is received after the access timer expires, then the access node terminates the wireless access to the communication system for the wireless communication device.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 2012Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Sprint Communications Company L.P.Inventors: Sachin R. Patent number: 8249611Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamically adjusting the size of an access search window are provided. In an embodiment a base station uses an access search window size, which is initially set to a default value, to determine whether to accept access requests from access terminals (ATs). The base station operates to accept access requests from ATs when the ATs are within the distance defined by the value of the access search window. The base station further operates to measure an amount of traffic for a sector of a wireless coverage area and change the value of the access search window size based on the amount of traffic on the sector.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2009Date of Patent: August 21, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Debasish Sarkar, Sachin Vargantwar, Siddharth T. Patent number: 8233899Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system to help reduce the extent of roaming or use of lower priority coverage areas in a wireless communication system, by selectively managing the level of noise in a preferred coverage area. A network entity will detect that a particular coverage area has a high rate or roaming or that another coverage area (e.g., a collocated or adjacent coverage area) has a high rate of use, and the network entity will responsively reduce a noise threshold in the particular coverage area so as to then tolerate less noise in the coverage area before taking affirmative action to reduce the level of noise, and thus optimally to reduce the extent of roaming or use of less preferred coverage.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2011Date of Patent: July 31, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Siddharth S. Oroskar, Sachin R. Vargantwar, Maulik K. Shah, Manoj Shetty

Patent number: 8229493Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamically adjusting a metric that influences power management of an access terminal are provided. Initially, an access node is configured to distribute reverse-activity bits (RAB's) to the access terminal, which conveys data, at a particular rate, to the access node. Adjusting the dynamic metric involves establishing a number of slots allocated for a filtered reverse-activity bit (FRAB) window and a hybrid reverse-activity bit (HRAB) window, wherein each of the slots are allocated to accept a RAB. The RAB's accepted to the slots of the FRAB window and the HRAB window are recursively averaged to derive a FRAB parameter and an HRAB parameter, respectively. The dynamic metric is adjusted by incorporating either the FRAB parameter or an HRAB parameter therein based on whether ramping conditions are satisfied. The rate of data conveyed from the access terminal is controlled based on the adjusted dynamic metric.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2011Date of Patent: July 24, 2012Assignee: Sprint Communications Company L.P.Inventors: Siddharth Oroskar, Sachin R. Patent number: 8213361Abstract: Air interface protocols under the numerous wireless communication standards allow use of a quick-paging channel (QPCH) to expedite paging and call setup. When a hybrid mobile device is engaged in wireless communications under a first air interface protocol, it may periodically switch over to a second air interface protocol to check for pages on the slower standard paging channel (PCH). To increase throughput under the first air interface protocol, it would be useful to employ the QPCH under the second air interface protocol, to reduce time spent by hybrid device checking for pages under the second air interface protocol. However, the QPCH uses resources under the second air interface protocol, so it would be best to not have the QPCH activated at all times. According to the invention, the system would activate the QPCH under the second air interface protocol in response to there being more than an upper threshold number of hybrid devices active under the first air interface protocol.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2009Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Debasish Sarkar, Sachin R.
