  • Patent number: 7048138
Abstract: A fuel cap has a torque member attached to an upper portion of a casing body. The torque member is a disk-shaped plate to transmit a rotational torque applied to a handle to the casing body. An interlocking recess and interlocking claws, which constitute a plate attachment mechanism, are arranged on the upper portion of the casing member. Fitting of the interlocking claws in the interlocking recess causes the torque member to be attached to the casing body in a freely rotatable manner. This simple structure of the invention effectively prevents the fuel cap from being easily damaged by an inadvertent operation, such as a careless drop of the fuel cap, and ensures the sufficient sealing properties of the fuel cap even under application of an external load.

  • Publication number: 20050051558
Abstract: A male threading element is formed on an outer circumference of a closer of a fuel cap, while a female threading element is formed on an inner wall of a filler neck. The user holds a handle and screws the closer into a fuel inlet of the filler neck to close the fuel inlet. Rotation of the handle in a closing direction screws the male threading element into the female threading element from a start end of the female threading element. A stopper formed on the male threading element comes into contact with the start end of the female threading element to complete the closing operation. At this full close position, a gasket located between the closer and a sealing face of the filler neck is pressed and displaced in an axial direction to seal the sealing face of the filler neck with a sealing face pressure of not less than a preset level. This structure fixes the position of the handle at the full close position of the fuel inlet and thereby ensures the good operation performance.

  • Patent number: 6793091
Abstract: A fuel cap is equipped with the torque mechanism 80. The torque mechanism 80 comprises the handle engagement element 46a formed on the cover 40; the torque plate 90, having the torque piece engagement element 94b; and a spring. When the cover 40 is rotated in the closing direction, the handle engagement element 46a disengages from torque piece engagement element 94b and the engagement gives the user a feeling of attachment by an audible click. At that time, elastic torque piece 94 elastically deforms so that the handle engagement vertical surface 46b is pushed in the radial direction by the engaging vertical surface 94d, a slot 94c. Conversely, when the cap is rotated in the opening direction, the engaging inclined surface 46c pushes the engaging inclined surface 94e and elastic torque piece 94 inclines with the support end 94a, and thus the cap transitions to a non-engaged state, and the cover 40 is returned to an initial position relative to the casing main body 20.
