  • Publication number: 20150321114
Abstract: A method is provided for attaching two objects, generally toys such as building blocks, to each other. The attachment is enabled by a first attachment means to a planar surface of a first object and a second attachment means to a planar surface of a second object. The first attachment means and second attachment means can be bonded to the corresponding object by an adhesive material such as glue, by traversing a corresponding insert into the object (resulting in an interference fit), and ultimately by any means applied by a manufacturer. The first attachment means serves as a male interface that can be engaged with a female interface of the second attachment means. By engaging the first male interface with the female interface, two objects can be attached to each other. An object can be provided with both a male interface and female interface in order to attach multiple objects.

  • Patent number: 9091633
Abstract: A method for locating the center of a beam profile, comprises the steps of: providing a beam profile; selecting one or more strips through the beam profile; identifying distinct regions of intensity along the one or more strips and labelling them consistently; calculating a combined average intensity for each labelled region, using data from the one or more strips; plotting the average intensity against the labelled regions and comparing the results with a plot of the actual intensity obtained by taking a cross-section through the center of at least one of the one or more strips; and optimizing the location of the center of at least one of the one or more strips so as to obtain the best fit between the average intensity plot and the actual intensity plot to thereby identify the center of the beam profile.

  • Patent number: 9041939
Abstract: A method of compensating for sample misalignment in an optical measurement apparatus (40), comprises the steps of: determining an expected response from a detector (58) in said optical measurement apparatus given a particular set of parameters defining a path that light can take through the optical measurement apparatus from a source (42), via a sample (50), to the detector (58); measuring a response from the detector for the sample under test; and refining the set of parameters until the expected response and the measured response converge so as to determine the set of parameters giving rise to the measured response.

  • Publication number: 20150138497
Abstract: A photonic device is manufactured by: (i) providing (e.g. by inkjet printing) an aliquot of a liquid crystal (LC) material; and (ii) depositing the aliquot onto the surface of a flowable material layer to form a liquid crystal deposit, the flowable material and the LC material being substantially immiscible. The liquid crystal deposit adopts a deformed shape relative to the shape of the aliquot due to interaction with the flowable material layer. This promotes alignment of the LC material. Incorporation of a laser dye allows the photonic device to function as a laser, which can be operated above or below threshold depending on the circumstances. The photonic device can also be used as a passive device based on the photonic bandgap of the aligned LC material.

  • Patent number: 8690932
Abstract: A collapsible bone screw for healing bone fragments across a bone fracture includes an externally threaded inner screw member and an externally threaded outer screw member. The inner screw member is initially screwed into an inner bone portion. An unthreaded portion of the outer screw member is movably joined to the inner screw member. The outer screw member is screwed until it gains purchase in an outer bone portion. As impaction occurs over time, the collapsible bone screw apparatus may shorten in length as the two screw members slide, telescope or otherwise axially move toward each other to shorten the overall length, thereby preventing any portion of the screw apparatus from protruding out of the bone. A bone screw kit of multiple inner and outer screw members are provided as well as a method of surgically fastening bone fragments.
