  • Patent number: 5457809
Abstract: When a particular mobile station transmits a call out signal including a group number of the mobile station and the call out signal is received by a mobile exchange by way of a mobile base station, the mobile exchange determines whether or not a group number is included in the call out signal. When a group number is included, the mobile exchange transmits a paging signal to all of radio base stations having service areas in which a mobile station or stations of the group are present. Each radio base station receiving the paging signal searches for a mobile station of the group in response to the paging signal and waits paging a response signal or signals from a mobile station or stations thus searched out.

  • Patent number: 5427959
Abstract: On a slab-like board formed of a transparent material is closely attached a wedge-shaped transparent cover member provided with a recess in a central inner portion, thereby to form a clearance. The height of the clearance between the recess and the board is configured to decrease continuously or in steps. When an immunological active substance such as a monoclonal antibody is caused to sensitize carrier particles F, and a reagent having the carrier particles F dispersed into a liquid medium mainly composed of the water is mixed with a specimen, the reaction will occur in which the flocculate is formed from plural carrier particles. When this reaction liquid is poured into the clearance through the opening, the reaction liquid penetrates in the direction having a narrower vertical spacing due to surface tension. A single carrier particle unflocculated can move deep within the recess because it is small in diameter, but the flocculate G is trapped on its way and can not move because of its size.

  • Patent number: 5384069
Abstract: A polymeric liquid crystal composition includes a polymer mesomorphic compound having an asymmetric carbon atom and a low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound. The composition can be easily formed into a film of a large area, exhibits a response speed which is not substantially different from that of the low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound alone and stably retains alignment resistant to pressure or heat impact. Such a good alignment is especially obtained when the polymeric liquid crystal composition is incorporated in a liquid crystal device by being disposed between a pair of substrates preferably having an alignment face provided with an orientation characteristic for aligning the molecular axis of the liquid crystal composition in one direction. It is suitable that the polymer mesomorphic compound is optically active and has a helical rotation direction opposite to that of the low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound.

  • Patent number: 5380490
Abstract: An apparatus is so constructed as to measure a specific substance in a test specimen by the degree of the aggregation of carrier particles in a reaction solution in which the test specimen is mixed with the carrier particles which carry a substance specifically binding to the specific substance. The apparatus includes a substrate having comb-shaped electrodes mounting the reaction solution and amplifier and alternating oscillator for displaying a variable voltage to the comb-shaped electrodes. The test specimen measuring apparatus having the structure accelerates the aggregation of the reaction solution by applying an alternating voltate to the comb-shaped electrodes in a state that the reaction solution is being mounted on the substrate, and detects the spatial spectrum of the comb-shaped electrodes on which the reaction solution is mounted, thus performing the qualitative or quantitative detection of the presence of the substance in the test specimen.

  • Patent number: 5339306
Abstract: A memory medium includes a memory layer of a polymer liquid crystal and a reflection layer disposed on a substrate. A record part having a different refractive index from that of a non-record part is formed in the memory layer so that the record part and the non-record part have a difference in optical thickness of the memory layer. In a reproduction step, the memory medium is irradiated with a reproduction beam of coherent light so that the reproduction beam is transmitted through the memory layer, reflected at the reflection layer and re-transmitted through the memory layer, during which the reproduction beam is subjected to interferential diffraction due to the optical thickness difference between the record part and the non-record part to allow readout of the recorded data.

  • Patent number: 5272552
Abstract: An optical modulation device is provided by forming an optical modulation layer comprising a polymer liquid crystal having a helical structure and a non-helical structure in chiral smectic C phase. The helical structure of the polymer liquid crystal is selectively formed or removed to provide a recorded state. The recorded state is held below the glass transition point of the polymer liquid crystal. The helical pitch of the helical structure can be selectively changed to form a recorded state. The helical structure can be formed to dispose its principal axis perpendicularly to the polymer liquid crystal layer. The recorded state may be read out by detecting a reflectance from the polymer liquid crystal layer.

  • Patent number: 5144464
Abstract: A polymer liquid crystal device is formed by a color polymer liquid crystal layer, generally disposed on a substrate. The color polymer liquid crystal layer includes a plurality of minute polymer liquid crystal elements, which in turn comprise plural species of color polymer liquid crystals colored in at least two colors and disposed regularly or irregularly in the layer so that the polymer liquid crystal elements emit scattered light in intensities which are selectively controlled thermally to effect a display with scattered light. In the color polymer liquid crystal layer, a color of the polymer liquid crystal elements emitting the longest wavelength scattered light are disposed in a larger areal proportion than the other color of the polymer liquid crystal elements so as to correct color balance in compensation for a difference in spectral luminous efficiency or differences in scattering intensity and scattering angle depending on colors during a display using scattered light.

  • Patent number: 5103332
Abstract: A color image forming method provides clear color images with good color balance by thermally controlling a thermosensitive medium, such as polymer liquid crystal. The medium is capable of reversibly assuming optical states of being transparent and of scattering light, and allows picture-element display areas in at least two colors to be composed on a surface thereof. Picture elements within color areas are selected if they correspond to the color whose spectral transmission center is, among those of the colors to be displayed, closest to the longest wavelength involved. Heat is applied such that the maximum haze degree of the selected picture elements is greater than that of picture elements corresponding to any of the other colors.

  • Patent number: 5100468
Abstract: An ink which can cause a change in its adhesiveness by an electrochemical reaction is obtained by impregnating a crosslinked substance such as polyvinyl alcohol with a liquid dispersion medium comprising an organic solvent having a relative dielectric constant of 15 or larger at 25.degree. C. such as ethylene glycol. The ink shows little characteristic change due to drying, etc., and suitably retains its fluidity when left standing in the air for a long period. The ink is supplied with a pattern of energy to be provided with an adhesive pattern, which is then transferred to a recording medium such as plain paper, directly or by the medium of an intermediate transfer medium to form an ink pattern corresponding to the energy pattern applied.

  • Patent number: 5066107
Abstract: A display medium having a display face is composed of a plurality of display layers laminated parallel to the display face. Each display layer comprises a polymer liquid crystal having a mesomorphic temperature range between its glass transition temperature and the upper limit temperature of a liquid crystal phase used for display. The mesomorphic temperature ranges of the plurality of display layers do not overlap each other. The optical densities of the display layers are controlled independently from the other by controlling the heating temperatures and cooling rates of the display layers, and the gradation of each color can be also controlled, so that a full-color display can be realized.
