  • Patent number: 5039208
Abstract: A crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is stretched to provide a polymer liquid crystal layer with a higher degree of uniform alignment than a non-crosslinked polymer liquid crystal. Such a stretched layer of crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is disposed between a pair of substrates to form a liquid crystal device showing a better contrast as a recording medium or display device. The improvement in alignment obtained by stretching of a crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is also effective in increasing the responsive characteristics in response to an electric field or magnetic field and also the pyro-electric effect of the resultant polymer liquid crystal layer where the polymer liquid crystal is a ferro-electric one.

  • Patent number: 4995705
Abstract: An optical modulation method comprises writing in a ferroelectric having a glass transition point at or above the glass transition point, and holding the resultant written state below the glass transition point. Preferably, the ferroelectric is formed in an optical modulation layer set to have an optical thickness capable of providing a multiple reflection state. The multiple reflection state of the optical modulation layer is locally changed at or above the glass transition point by irradiating the optical modulation layer under an electric field with a laser beam to write in the optical modulation layer.

  • Patent number: 4965591
Abstract: A recording medium having a recording layer comprising a polymer liquid crystal is used for multivalue recording by using at least two different liquid crystal phases at least two levels of locally different liquid crystal proportion, or thicknesswise difference in an optical variable, such as transmittance a reflectance, generally through controlled heating and cooling. In effecting the recording, two heating sources may suitably be used, one for imagewise heating and the other for supplemental heating.

  • Patent number: 4920361
Abstract: An image recording method and an image recording apparatus using an ink which is substantially non-adhesive but can be imparted with an adhesiveness when subjected to a pH change. In the image recording method, the ink is subjected to a pattern of pH change to be provided with an adhesive pattern, which is then transferred to a recording medium, such as plain paper, directly or by the medium of an intermediate transfer medium to form an ink pattern corresponding to the pH change pattern.

  • Patent number: 4789617
Abstract: A toner suitable for developing electrostatic images is produced through a process comprising: dispersing a monomer composition comprising at least a polymerizable monomer and a colorant in an aqueous medium heated at a temperature higher than a polymerization temperature, thereby to form particles of the monomer composition; adjusting the aqueous medium to the polymerization temperature; and adding a substantially water-insoluble polymerization initiator to the aqueous medium containing the particles of the monomer composition dispersed therein and adjusted to the polymerization temperature, thereby to cause the polymerization of the polymerizable monomer. According to this process, a toner containing a large amount of a low-softening point compound and having good fixability at low pressure and/or low temperature can be produced while retaining good anti-blocking characteristic and fluidity.
