Publication number: 20180048094Abstract: Connector inserts and receptacles that provide signal paths having desired impedance characteristics. One example may provide a connector system having a connector insert and a connector receptacle. Contacts in the connector insert may form signal paths with corresponding contacts in the connector receptacle. Additional traces in the connector insert and receptacle may be part of these signal paths. The signal paths may have a target or a desired impedance along their lengths such that the power paths electrically appear as transmission lines. Constraints on physical dimensions of the connector insert and connector receptacle contacts may result in variations in impedance along the signal paths. Accordingly, embodiments of the present invention may provide structures to reduce these variations, to compensate for these variations, or a combination thereof.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 29, 2017Publication date: February 15, 2018Applicant: Apple Inc.Inventors: William P. Cornelius, Mahmoud R. Amini, Zheng Gao

Publication number: 20170353291Abstract: Circuits, methods, and apparatus that may reconstruct a data signal in the presence of ground drift and high-frequency signal coupling. An illustrative embodiment of the present invention may reconstruct a received data signal by taking an finite difference of the received data signal, detecting edges of the received data signal by detecting positive and negative peaks of the finite difference of the received signal, and reconstructing the received data signal using the detected edges. Taking a finite difference of the received data signal removes the DC component of the received data signal, as well as the ground drift that may cause the DC component of the received data signal to change over time. Additional filtering may be used to reduce high-frequency signal coupling and power supply inductive coupling.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 6, 2017Publication date: December 7, 2017Applicant: Apple Inc.Inventors: Hsiao-Ping Tsai, William P. Patent number: 9118356Abstract: The described embodiments relate generally to a dielectric wave guide interconnect for an electronic device including a first routing circuit, a second routing circuit, and a dielectric wave guide coupling the first routing circuit to the second routing circuit. The interconnect may also include a first coupling element securing a first end of the dielectric wave guide proximal to the first routing circuit and a conductive element to insulate the dielectric wave guide from radio-frequency (RF) signals. In some embodiments, the first routing circuit is in a bottom portion of the electronic device; and the second routing circuit is in a top portion of the electronic device. An electronic device including a dielectric wave guide interconnect as above is also disclosed. A coupler for an electronic device including a first end adapted to receive an electrical signal and a propagating electromagnetic signal is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2013Date of Patent: August 25, 2015Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Steven C. Michalske, William P. Cornelius, Neal V. Cecil

Patent number: 9065225Abstract: High-speed connectors having a high density of contacts may be provided. One example may provide a connector having a housing with a slot forming an opening in a top side. The slot and opening may be arranged to receive a card. This connector may provide a high density of contacts by arranging the contacts in multiple rows in the slot. Various contacts may include barbs to be inserted into the housing. The barbs may be angled and may have one or more teeth to help anchor the contacts in place. A conductive or nonconductive shield or shell may be placed over the housing. When a conductive shield is used, metal pins may be inserted into the housing for mechanical stability and secured to the shield, and various contacts may have contacting portions in contact with the shield to improve signal integrity.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2013Date of Patent: June 23, 2015Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Brett W. Degner, Mahmoud Amini, William P. Cornelius, Zheng Gao, Aaron P. Miletich, George Marc Simmel

Patent number: 8745430Abstract: The disclosed embodiments provide a system that facilitates synchronization between a first component and a second component connected to the first component via an interface in a computer system. During an active state of the interface, the system uses a local time base in the second component to generate a local clock signal that tracks a host clock signal from the first component. Next, during an inactive state of the interface, the system uses the local time base to maintain the local clock signal at the second component. Finally, during a subsequent active state of the interface after the inactive state, the system adjusts the local clock signal to remove clock drift between the local clock signal and the host clock signal.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2011Date of Patent: June 3, 2014Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: William P.
